Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Actually, I talked with my cousin about that. He's on the adcom at his school. He said it wasn't as bad as the MCAT because 1. it was fresher material and 2. it didn't determine his future in a tight intense competition where only 43% make it in. The stress is completely different and there is tons of support available to help you nail it. It's not an obstacle keeping you out, it's designed to be hard but to make sure you can continue on through.
Yeah, I'm just noticing that a lot of my med student friends pretty much disappear for the 3-6 weeks that they study for it.

And I would argue that depending on what specialty you're aiming for, your score can very much make or break you.

people should be striving for excellence. especially those on their last chance.

Definitely.

you're absolutely correct. i'm just saying don't be one to judge simply based on grades.... some of those people have qualities that you may lack. after all you yourself said they will be your colleagues one day... so seek out the good and deal with the bad, i guess.

Yessir.

absolutely. the grade per se is inconsequential, it's the attitude.

Entirely true. If these people know they want to be doctors, they need to be trying harder and not acting like complete *******es and tools.

I was proctoring an exam today and this creepy guy kept on looking up and grinning at me. Then I realized that's just what he looks like all the time.

lol, damn

baby hh it is then.

and the mcat... ahh the mcat. definitely glad it's over. but does anyone else ever feel like they wanted another crack at it? sometimes i feel like it is my shortcoming of this application cycle....

Me. I KNOW my MCAT is the shortcoming of my cycle, considering the amazing unexpected invites I received - that could have just sealed the deal.

i think unless you get a 45 you'll always want to take at least another crack. then you lay down the crack pipe.

Nah, I'd be okay with a 35 or so.

Definitely.

yea u say that now, but if you get pne youd want higher. im still kinda pissed that i missed an easy trend question on the ps section to miss getting a 15. i wanted a 42, that way u add a 0 and its 420

What are you guys doing here!
Go get your free Ben and Jerry's!!!

I'm just hoping mine's high enough to convince Michigan to make themselves an affordable option. :xf:

Free Ben and Jerry's scoop day!!!
They do it every year!!!
GO NOW! and Try the New York super fudge chunk flavor!

Do you think I could get UMich to match UChicago's offer if they lowballed me with their initial offer? 😛

I want one! My dad met with his financial advisor and he's apparently going to take my awards and figure out the best strategy for financing my education. Sigh.

Huh? 😕

i don't remember too much about the mcat. i think my brain suppresses traumatic memories

edit: also, step 1 is going to be so much worse

I agree. But it will be fun to kill it.

Do you think I could get UMich to match UChicago's offer if they lowballed me with their initial offer? 😛
You could certainly try. They might not match it but they might be more inclined to give you more. And they certainly won't take away money from you, so it definitely doesn't hurt

An autistic teenager from the Chicago area has done something almost impossible.
Nearly 48 games into an upset-filled NCAA tournament, 17-year-old Alex Herrmann is perfect.
"It's amazing," he says. Truly.
The teenager predicted that Northern Iowa would beat the Kansas Jayhawks. He picked Ohio to knock off Georgetown. And Cornell to knock off Wisconsin.

In fact, he picked every game through the first two rounds correctly. The odds of anybody doing that? One in 13,460,000, according to BookofOdds.com. It's easier to win the lottery. Twice.
"I'm good at math," Alex, a Glenbrook South High School student, said. "I'm kind of good at math and at stats I see on TV during the game."
Alex entered the bracket on CBSsports.com's bracket challenge. CBS did not return several phone calls to confirm entries into its game. His 24-year-old brother Andrew, who helped him enter his picks into CBS' bracket manager, also entered the contest -- and ranks behind 500,000 other people.
"My bracket is totally shot," hist 24-year-old brother Andrew said. "So is everyone else I know."
ESPN estimates around 4.78 million played in their bracket challenge, but no one picked all the games correctly. The leader at ESPN's bracket has already missed four games.
But Alex Hermann's miraculous bracket is still a picture of perfection.
Andrew is still shocked --- after looking it over for the umpteenth time, he told his mother to alert the media.
"I checked his bracket and it was off the chart," Andrew said. "I thought it was big deal."
Alex doesn't get anything for perfection. He entered one of three bracket games offered by CBS -- the only one without a prize attached.
Alex's basketball knowledge could have been worth a fortune. One of the other CBS games offers a prize of $5,000 per round. Other sites offer even more money -- Yahoo offers $1 million for a perfect bracket; SportsBook.com offers $13 million.
"If he would have won any money he would have just saved it," his mother Diane said. "He's a big saver."
Of course, everyone wants to know Alex's secret. He says there's none.
"I watched each team this year and saw the size of the player and looked at the stats," Alex said.
There are still four rounds remaining, so it could fall apart -- the odds of a perfect wire to wire bracket is about 1 in 35,360,000 by some measures or 1 in 1,000,000,000,000 by others.
Alex picked Purdue to win the whole thing. That just happens to be his brother's alma mater.
"They're his favorite for that reason," Diane said. Or maybe he knows something no one else does.

How do you negotiate your package?

What part of the package are you paying the most attention too? I just got one and I have no idea how I would even begin to do that.

life is so cruel sometimes

thats freaky, i need to get an autistic kid to pick my bracket next year

I have no idea, but I'm going to give it a shot if UMich falls short. I don't think I'd ask for any specific amount, or even ask them to match anything, I think I'd just tell them what the other schools offered and ask if there's anything they could do to improve their offer.

That story was more depressing than inspiring, the fact that he did so well and will get nothing for it. 🙁

I get the impression that some schools are more receptive to it than others.

Mostly, when people talk about negotiating offers, they're concerned with the merit scholarships or grants/need-based institutional scholarships (free money) that a school offers.

In Michigan's case, they pretty openly state that their merit scholarships are "recruitment" scholarships used to convince people to come to their school over another school (or schools), and so I think people just email the admissions director (or whoever is in charge of such things), tell them they're struggling with the decision because of cost and ask for some help

Becuase when you actually look at the breakdown of the package it will be like 😱😕. But I will have to research it somemore and see what parts could be discussed.

Each school has different terminology, but I think there's pretty universal language between loans (money you pay back) and grants/scholarships (money you don't pay back).

Then again, if your EFC is high and your aid packages are all loans, then you probably don't have too much to discuss

I was half expecting to recieve a package that stated (10 grand you must now go and find) but the package had the cost fully covered and mostly by fafsa and plus. But I will take a look and see if there is something to discuss. Just happy I can.. go!

Yeah I don't think people have an issue getting loans (at least not that I'm aware of...), it's the free money that some schools offer that we're talking about negotiating

BB... that bracket story is ridiculous. Good for him. I hope he doesn't get pissed when purdue loses to the dukies lol.

But damn, perfect bracket... surreal

I'm really lax about all this scholarship talk because I don't think I'm getting jack****... maybe I should be more proactive.

All I want to do is get into the cheapest school of my choice and I'll foot the bill as is.

le sigh

Yeah, you're pretty much guaranteed loans to meet your costs. They do take away your subsidized loans if they deem you make to much money though.

Can you argue for MORE subsidized loans? And less unsub loans? Think you could negotiate that? They can change that right?

No subsidized loans have strict limits set by the federal gov ( $8,500 per student per year last year). Some school do make their own institutional low interest loans, but that depends on the school.

Oh, thats what I got. lol

When the package save an amount from the PLUS loan. Does this mean you are approved and already signed up or will there be another step? Sorry, so clueless on this. 😕

I don't know much about plus loans, but looking at my current aid statement it does look like you need to do something extra to accept them.

Yeah to accept them you have to look over the terms and etc .... but I wonder if there is something else they do to determine if they will be granted or if you see them on your package you have already been approved. I just dont want to miss something.

I know PLUS loans are subject to a credit check (that's what I read on SDN anyways) but other than that if they are in your aid package they should be there for you.

i like the nfl overtimes as they are (minus the regular season ties)

Yeah I'm fine with the old format too. How about making a stop on defense if you lose the coin toss?

I'm OK with this new format too though. As long as they don't adopt college OT.

Dumb question, but can you only apply for loans after you decide where to go? Seems that's not the case, so I'll do it for the one I am accepted....but how do you do it for a school where you're waitlisted? Impossible?

I like college OT.

What I don't like about it, though, is that all the stats count toward the regular season team and player stats.

In the really tight games, the scores jump to 50-48 or whatever when the game ended at 17-17. The final is not indicative of a team's defense or offense when you put them on the 25 yard line.

Off to tutor.

You can send FAFSA info to schools you are waitlisted at. They won't give you an aid package unless you are accepted though.

for schools you are WL at you need to send them a fafsa (already past deadline i think) and any other fin aid papers they want. Basically you send them everything as if you are admitted so its ready if you are admitted late.
