Ndamukong Suh hits twice as hard as a 95 mph fastball and more than 4 times as hard as Ray Lewis...

Come on Lions, don't f*** this one up.

I'm trying to go up there, but there might not be enough time. If I do get up there, I'll put you on my calendar.

Coolio. Maybe you, JJ, and me can get some drinks in the City or something. If you come up here.

That sounds good.

It all depends on how long my friend can take off work. He works in a kiosk-type thing, so there aren't many employess. We might not be able to be gone for more than a week. I'm pushing for like 10 days.

Okay, let me know how it goes when you get to Cali.

sports science is entertaining

except it should really be called "sports in slow motion with random scientific measurements shown on the screen"

Haha, it's only one aspect of sports too. You don't get that x-factor and the ability to think while in motion and being able to avoid your reflexes (i.e. I'm in the middle of getting fouled but instead of bracing myself I'm shooting the ball). There's a lot of things outside of being a pure athlete that go into sports, but I don't think sports science goes into enough detail about them.

However, they proved that those who get laid more perform better at their sports. Interesting...

I've decided I don't have the time nor money to get a passport, so my choices are limited to Puerto Rico, US Virgin Isles and anywhere else that doesn't need a passport.

I'm really looking forward to checking out some of the lakeshore... it's just beautiful. Lots of state parks farther north too.

that looks amazing. i'm so glad for you that you're ending up there! (honestly, if i were less of a chicken about moving far from my parents, michigan would have been very high on my list)

Not trying to be a "one-upper" or anything, but this just so happens to be my backyard:

This "study" is such garbage. Obviously the baseball player can't hit the softball pitch as well. In order for this to be even somewhat worthwhile, you'd have to get somebody who had never played either sport.

N. Michigan is really nice.

If you like cars the Woodward Dream Cruise is one of the weeks in August. Even on the weeks surrounding it there's usually tons of cool cars driving around.

There's also the autoshow in January which everyone seems to make a big deal about.

but JJ, look at all the numbers! and the slow motion shots! it's SCIENCE! it has to be right!

Dr. Yoda, did you see the Ndamukong Suh sports science I posted earlier? That was for you!

Like I stated earlier, they don't take intangibles into consideration.

Edit: The guy was swinging at the softball with a baseball bat. Softball bats are much lighter and are metal. The guy wasn't used to hitting softballs or using a softball bat, there is no muscle memory etc.

or the energy of a softball thing. but a softball is damn hard to hit, its almost impossible to get a hit on a good pitcher, and she can pitch consecutive games.

P.S. met, Michiganders usually point out where they live using their right hands. You can't do that if you're a Yupper though (Upper Peninsula resident = Yupper).

Not to mention the guy was probably distracted by how decently attractive she is and that had to have taken away from his ability to focus on the ball.

I agree though, it's hard to hit a softball, but the one pitch that is virtually untouchable is the knuckle ball on a humid day.

honestly, spending any time talking about what variables they did and did not consider in that show is probably putting far far too much faith in their desire to do anything other than create an interesting tv show

I've seen some of the yupper use their left hand turned sideways to do it (with thumb extendd out for kewanaw). Doesn't work quite as well as the mitten though.

Also, who says that whichever has a greater force is harder to hit? F=ma, and obviously a softball has more mass than a baseball. It depends on who is trying to hit it. If I had to hit a pitch to save my life I'd much rather attempt a 70 mph softball than a 95 mph baseball.

That's cool.

I've heard some interesting things about the Yuppers and that the UP is basically like redneck south transplanted. Aren't they really weird up there?

But they did mention how the softball gets to you faster than a baseball despite the slower speed due to the pitching mound is closer.

I went to Florida for Spring Break in high school one year and saw some Yuppers in Orlando, it's crazy how many Michiganders go to Florida with the whole Amway thing and what-not. The only other place I've seen Yuppers is in Mackinac Island; not having cars gets old quick though lol. Gotta love the fudge though.

I've seen people laugh when they see the Michigan tourism commercials, but I was usually surprised and I would definitely consider going there for a vacation. It's just kind of far away when I could get similar scenery a lot closer.

Hey! That's where my family originally settled😛.

Not sure if it's quite redneck. But they have a different accent (think canadian mixed with Scandinavian) and are fairly backwoodish since there's barely anyone up there. They're big drinkers up there too. Also greenbay fans vs. Lions fans.

Yeah that's another thing. If we're doing which is harder to hit, shouldn't we minimize variables and do them both from the same distance?

I haven't met too many Yuppers to be able to judge them fairly.

What I do know from having a cabin in western Michigan (most people have cabins up north) is that western michigan has a heavy heavy Dutch population in western Michigan. But it seems like every area outside of Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Traverse City, Muskegon, and Metro-Detroit is like transplanted rednecks.

Diameter of a softball is way bigger than a baseball!!! Also not as much movement in a softball verses baseballs that can curve up to 5 feet or something ridiculous like that.

I have the right to make redneck-y judgements, half of my family are coonasses from the swamp.

As I've traveled more, it surprised me the area that rednecks cover that I didn't initially think about. They're not just in the south. Even New York has them, albeit upstate.

hahah that is awesome. you don't see the word coonasses every day.

About the whole laughing at Michigan thing. Michigan sucks if your poor. Michigan is amazing if you have money. The issue is that the middle class is being smothered in Michigan and it's becoming rich vs. poor. The thing is, the rich parts are really really nice. (The median household income in the city I live in is 170k a year and people live Steve Yzerman, Joe Dumars, Bill Davidson, the guy who designed the World Trade Center, etc. all live there. It's like the rich all flock to one place.) I mean, it's not Los Angeles and it's not Chicago, but if you have money you can have a lot of fun in Michigan. Even if you are not an outdoorsy type.

True... try 75% of Iowa, minus Des Moines, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, and the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area. Maybe Davenport and a few others I missed too...

You have more surface area to make contact with, also there are more "sweet spots" on a softball that allow you to make an optimum level of impact. If I throw a marble at you and I threw a volleyball at you, which one would be easier to hit? It's the same ideal with a baseball and softball. Plus, the large size of the softball makes it harder to add curve, especially throwing underhand.

 My best description of the UP is: Really touristy areas and some expensive vacation home areas near the UP/LP border. Then basically emptiness (although often really scenic) for everywhere else. Great place to vacation, not so great place to live which is why my parents generation all lives in the lower peninsula.

As I've traveled more, it surprised me the area that rednecks cover that I didn't initially think about. They're not just in the south. Even New York has them, albeit upstate.

Yeah, I think most areas that aren't near big cities can be classified as such.

Why so lame?

A couple reasons, the music wasn't ideal, not really upbeat, more slow songs, and more importantly, the girl I really wanted to bring couldn't make it 🙁 oh well, would have been real fun though, I think!
