Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks.

I'm just trying to get a feel for that kind of stuff, since I have no idea of the whole process. Most people want to get a "top" residency, but I don't really know what that entails. I've always thought of residency as just dealing with patients and not research.

But when you think about top programs, they want research from everybody, so I guess that means they want the residents to chip in, too, despite their already crazy schedules.

this is for fellows but yea

Characteristics

The Thomas Jefferson University Sports Medicine Fellowship Program is based at the Rothman Institute located in
Philadelphia's Center City as well as at Lankenau, Methodist, Nazareth and Riddle Memorial Hospitals in the Philadelphia Suburban region. The fellows work with six sports medicine fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeons in addition to three fellowship trained primary care sports medicine physicians. This allows for a well-rounded sports medicine educational program. The fellow is involved in the pre-participation screening of athletes at the professional, collegiate and high school levels. Surgical experience includes the full breadth of arthroscopic and open treatment of knee, shoulder, and elbow problems, as well as arthroplasty of the knee and shoulder. The fellow is involved with the management of the athlete in the clinic, on the athletic field, and in the operating room.

Research

The Rothman Institute has a full-time research staff and facilities available for sports medicine research of any interest. At least two basic science or clinical research projects suitable for presentation and publication must be produced during the fellowship. Monthly research meetings are held to facilitate the research process. The fellows have one half day per week for research, although ample additional time is available for research endeavors. The fellow is expected to present at sports medicine conferences which are attended by physicians, fellows, residents and medical students.

a decent amount of residents i met took an extra year off to do research...it really makes me wonder i mean i dont like research and have no interest in academics. But it seems like if i want to advance my career or do anything with it, academic medicine is forced upon you. I have no bench experience as all my research was clinical...i guess i can just get with some random doc and start something? lol. I have no idea how to do research or come up with my own things. I just dislike research 🙁 but i guess i have no choice.

yea, this happens a lot. also, lot of people pick up (half-ass) PhDs during residency

That's what it seems like.

Hopefully I'll get in tight with some awesome private practice and just do my stuff there. :xf:

haha you and me both dude. I need to meet someone who already has a great one set up and just let me ease into it and take over . Bb is doing clinical research as easy as i think it is? I mean the ones i did for 2 years were so simple. Its like just come up with a random idea, get a bunch of patients charts and do some random retrospective study. Bam published haha....thats the way it seemed at least with most of the residents. Maybe our hospital just sucked though lol. Or you could be fancy and do a 1 yr prospective study to make something take a while and make that research year easy?

That's the goal.

Unfortunately, I've never been very good at making connections. I'm kind of stubborn and want to do everything myself, but I need to change so that I can actually get somewhere in this profession. It seems like you don't get anywhere without connections.

this has me worried too

you might be able to do a MPH or MBA during your residency required research time
really? during your fellowship research year they would allow this? For IM residencies it seems most dont allow a lot of research time unless you take 1 year off between fellowship and residency...but if i did this id rather be a hospitalist or something for one year.

yea depends on the program (mostly the chair) though

that research thing is more of a problem for md/phds who want to do research in their career more so than people that don't like to do research and are looking to avoid it

accidentally gave my sparring partner a black eye at the gym tonight. whoops.

That is sweet.

i made a counter offer, idk if you will like it. but i think we can come to an agreement in the eventual future

Yeah, that does sound pretty sweet. Love all the sports affiliations.

BTW, thanks for your vacation info last night.

No prob. I think both of those would be fun, but I just realized that both of those locations are a little bit difficult/expensive to get to flying in. TBH, if you have never been to SF I recommend flying there and maybe spending 1 day in Napa/Sonoma and the rest of your time around the SF area.

👍

I would have to rent a car definitely. It just sucks that flying out west is so expensive, no matter which airline you use.

i heard that album was pretty ridic, is it better than MGMT's oracular spectacular?

it's greeaaaat. Not a fan of MGMT's second album, and apparently a lot of people aren't. They refused to play 'kids' @ coachella because the audience wasn't into their new tracks

i dont like their new one either. first one was mad solid though. kids is pretty sick

i still find myself listening to the sant-a/e/i/o/u-gold album more than anything else

Seriously. Some of her tracks continue to make the cut onto the monthly CD I burn for the car. I really hope her sophomore effort is solid as a lot of artists have trouble with that. Crystal Castle's second just leaked and it's solid. 'Baptism' FTW.

those were the great days. i loved burning songs on a cd and sending them out to people. if i went back and listened to the CDs, i would still remember the tracklists/random orders of songs and everything associated with them. they are like... modern day diaries
