Depending on what happens, there might be money available to do that.

I know during the 1989 spill a bunch of geology undergrads and PhD students made money going up to Alaska and helping out. I had a professor who did it as a PhD student and made like 50k for 3 months of work.

If you have iGoogle or a Gmail account, Google customizes your searches by linking them with previous inquiries. So, if you've search those schools before, they might pop up for your search of "the U."
 
searching the u gives me:

a generic college site, miami, miami (via espn), a tv station, miami, miami, missouri in st louis, missouri in st louis, utah, and miami

it's probably a regional thing. if you're in utah and say "the u," people are more likely to think you're talking about utah than miami. miami's definitely known more nationally as the "the u" though (well, at least in this californian's opinion)

you could also make a poll that asks people who live in Utah what the U is. the majority will say the U is in reference to the University of Utah.

i dont think that anyone is saying that Miami isnt known as the U. all we are saying is that Miami isnt the only U out there. at least thats what Im saying.

actually, i take that back. this discussion started because someone didn't know what the U was in reference to. WHOA!!! someone on SDN didn't know what the U was in reference to? EVERYONE knows what the U is in reference to. blasphemy!
