im not getting off any waitlists, unless they take people for not sending updates/LOIs and thank you notes

I got off one without sending them anything post-interview. They did turn down my subsequent demands for $$$ though:laugh:.

palo alto and san diego and LA aren't cheap either though
California, specifically the bay area=$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, which is why I shall never go there. I hear Stanford gives a fairly nice housing subsidy to residents though.

i kind of wish i was one of those people who knows what specialty they're planning on going into

 you can't offer up a pity strike. it would be pitiful

it's not a mercy strike, proven by the fact that you haven't noticed that i've already offered it.

1) The number of warnings we give depends on a lot of things. One is the default number, but we can make exceptions.

2) There used to be a thread cap at 1,000 back in the day, but no such cap exists anymore.

awesome, we'll be the first 100k+ thread then :>

Yeah, to echo what brook said, Palo Alto and San Diego aren't any cheaper than SF. If they are, it's minimal.

And have you actually been there? Or are you basing your opinion on South Park?

Me, too.

Especially if it's something competitive. For those you have to know what you want to do like 3 months before you start med school to get all the stuff you need to match - on top of having good grades and scores. It's crazy.

i still haven't withdrawn from duke...every time i try to hit 'send' i chicken out

Do it!!

I have... 8 warnings and 3 infractions

Those were just for trolling. I have a total of 5 warnings and 3 infractions.

So I found a document that has all the NRMP residency programs, if anyone wants to check it out (since we're kind of on the subject of residency locations). I wanted to check out my options for various programs in various parts of the country.

FWIW, the only California places I could see myself doing residency are Stanford and UCSD.

Thanks for posting that! And thanks to Yoda too. 🙂

It does feel odd to make a big, terminal feeling career decision (going to med school) and then have to go through the whole "what do I want to do with my life?" thing again. I'm pretty set on IM--> not very procedural subspeciality now though.

I just assume anywhere in California is mad expensive.

I haven't been (might go this summer), but close friends and family tell me experiences that lead me to believe it's kind of like that.

Plus, I usually agree with South Park on most things in life and that might not be any different.

i always thought it was crazy that 100 % of everyone I met in Philly, NJ, and NYC were single and how 100% of people I met outside weren't

why no procedures?

The irony is that people from my tiny hometown in the midwest are way more smug, snobby, judgmental, and less friendly than people here.

That's just my experience though.

there are parts that are consirably less than others, w/o going too downhill in quality. go north of sf and its gets cheaper. in between sf and la isn't too bad either. only problem is that all the med schools are located in major metropolitan areas = more expensive cost of living.

i'll probably do something similar, but the thought of going through another app process for residency and then another one for fellowship just sounds :boom:

part of me understands the appeal of family medicine

If I had to guess right now, I'd say that I'll do a IM or Peds residency and then specialize in Endo or Peds Endo, respectively. We shall see how that turns out though. Medicine has WAY too many decisions to make.

i hope its not in minnesota 🙁

i did find that the people in south carolina were a lot friendlier and happier than ppl in minny though

East bay is relatively cheap

East bay is relatively cheap

compared to sf, yeah. but then again, its ridic in sf. no med school in east bay, so you would have to commute to sf or stanford. although, there are a few teaching community hospitals in east bay that have residents.

I usually find city people to be more douchey, but I have preconceived notions and assumptions, though.

One of the reasons why I'm trying not to consider IM at all. Then when you do fellowships and stuff you have to do so much research...

I just watch to apply for residency and be done with the whole app thing.

Nope, not Minnesota.

I'll give you some clues though.

Here's our state bird. Hunting them is a big business

met what are you interested in doing?

If I had to pick, I would choose between Ortho, Rads, Anesthesia and EM.

It just sucks that Ortho and Rads are so competitive that if I wanted to do one of those, I would have to start getting really involved like ASAP. At least Anes and EM are of average competition.

Oh, and maybe Heme/Onc, but the fellowship thing really turns me off.

we dont have birds here in pennsylvania, i think the official bird is big bird

is that a common pheasant?

When I saw pheasant, I thought either Dakotas or Iowa.

I can't believe that I know all the countries and capitals of the world, yet I still can't remember which Dakota that Mount Rushmore is in.

Well now I know it's SD.

Mt. Rushmore really isn't that cool. It's smaller than you'd expect and you can't get very close to it.

Looks just like the pictures.
