Will it be really expensive for you to live by yourself?

I'm moving to Philly, and a tiny studio runs about 850/month + utilities. I am willing to live very frugally and sacrifice some stuff just to afford my own place because I hate having roommates (bad experiences), especially if they are strangers. Moving to a new city and starting med school are already stressful, so I don't want the additional stress of dealing with a bad roommate....

fun? lol. I'm enjoying my 2 week summer vaca as much as I can. But holy wow. I'm just going to stay curled up in bed all day.

Let's definitely keep sending presents. Though I have a new address now.

ya i definitely understand-living alone is expensive (and i think i'd get lonely), but living with strangers is scary. it's like freshmen year all over again (my roomie was a real keeper-threw up on my furniture, made me take care of her when she was drunk, etc😛), but at least you'll get your on room unlike the dorms.

as far as it affecting my decisions, i haven't really made that a priority when ranking schools. i just kind of hoped if i lived with another med student, they wouldn't be too crazy or anything since they obviously studied hard enough to get into med school. i'm actually really lucky though that my top choice happens to have a pretty good friend living there and i think i'm gonna room with her. good luck with the housing decisions diva!

and good luck with the emory wl taty!!🙂

Yeah, I'm with ya. The housing prices aren't fun in Philly. Maybe I'll start dumpster diving when I get there...

Its not impossible to find something near the upper limit of what the school budget allows for. A studio, approx 500 sq ft, will probably about the same $ as you. I agree, though, then there are sacrifices to made concerning cable tv or other luxuries. I have had various experiences w/ roommates, but I am ready to live alone. Last sentence is my thought exactly. But then again, trying to find ways to reduce overall loans. Kind of teetering back and forth if this is something I want to be seriously concerned about.

thanks....i guess it is good that things have kept me from SDN for past couple of weeks, id be crazy by now if I kept track of all this wl stuff

thanks jackson! yeah, i am not sure if this should be a priority when ranking schools. i guess when all else is equal, i tend to start looking at the nitty gritty to find some way to help the decision process. but when i step back, it just seems odd to eliminate a school simlpy based on housing. eh...all will work itself out in the end.

i'm doing on-campus housing and have been emailing with my roommate -- she seems really cool.

much UNlike my first roommate after graduation (don't do roommates.com) who tried to sell her urine on craigslist for $300 after she became pregnant 8 months into the lease.

:wow:

it probably wouldn't be the end of the world if i was placed in on campus shared housing. i just dread that situation like above. that's awesome that your roommate is cool.

Have you found anything yet? Are you living by yourself off-campus? I'm hoping to find a decent place where I can stay at for all 4 years. Moving is such a pain in the butt.

It's hard to find a place for 4 years. Rent goes up pretty much every year, so, if you're like me, you compare the cost+pain of moving to the cost of increased rent.

I sent in my form for on-campus housing. I will probably end up going that route for first year as it's a new city for me and I don't really know a soul there. I think after I get established there I will want to move off-campus for M2/M3/M4. I put a studio as my top choice though but I bet I will get a 2 BR.

Me too. I think they said there are only 9 studios total....

My new life plan is to stay in a super cheap area through residency. And do a residency that allows sick moonlighting.

Cheap area I get; moonlighting I don't. On top of your clinical responsibilities, you're expected to study/stay on top of the literature. You'll already be tired, and moonlighting might make you too tired to do your job.

Have you opted to listen to the advice I've given in other threads and looked up the medicinesux and earlyretirementextreme blogs?

I've never understood how people have time for moonlighting either.

Certain specialties are moonlighting friendly (EM, gas, rads). Ones like surgery it doesn't work well because they works so much without it.

I thought the EM hour cap was 60/week average. I'd say most/all of the EM residents I know are pushing/exceeding the cap. I can definitely see a rads resident having the energy to moonlight...lazy punks

Most EM people I know moonlight. I didn't know they had a 60 hour limit, but good thing EM is at the bottom of my specialty list with peds and ob/gyn.
