Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
oh and how about that dow jones?

anyone, anyone??

Haha yeah. I just posted there. But for reals, ask me anything. I do better with more specific questions. I'm more than willing to help anyone with any MCAT stuff I can.

I'm glad you don't hate me like you said you would. 😀

Questionss for ksmi:

1. for BS were there a lot of organic questions on your test? should i concentrate on mechanism b/c i suck as that. Are the free standing straight forward? passage questions straightforward as well?

2. Verbal is my weak point. How can I help overcome this? it's difficult for me b/c english was my second language and you really have to nit-pick the little details in the answer choices.

3. physical: many formulas to memorize? which was harder for you: physics or g. chem? were there a lot of electricity and magnetism questions or more of solids and liquids?

it's a lot of questions to ask....sorry. i just need to do excellent on this MCAT and i have less than 2 months.

tell me about it. listen to jim cramer nurse his hangover everyday talking about obama destroying the free markets lol

but the 150 gain today is well worth some analysis (the prez did say to buy stock, and so the surge is not just for fun)

i wonder if any 2014'ers are big on the investing stuff, we should start a club within a club

jim cramer is right. obama talk about gloom and doom really scare investors. today was a short gain. it probably drop again.

1. There was a good bit of organic, but nothing too difficult. I didn't have mechanism questions, so idk how much you should worry about that. Everything was really straightforward. The passages were more about logical thinking than acutally knowing details. I used my basic Bio knowledge and logic to get through them and it seemed to work out.

2. Verbal, I really don't know what to say. I didn't prepare for it. The only thing that I did was try and figure out if I did better reading the questions or the passage first. Sometimes the questions come straight from the passage, but sometimes they are vague and it confused you more. Maybe try reading the questions but not the answer choices first so you have a basic idea of what you're looking for. But, really I wouldn't read the answer choices first. You'll probably subconsciously pick an answer before you read and that will skew your intereptation of the passage. All I can suggest is try lots of different ways to approach the questions. Also, don't overthink stuff too much. It's general the easy answer, I've found.

3. Well, my MCAT was way more theory-based than calculations-based which was sad for me. 🙁 I had those equations down. But really you gotta know it all - the equations and the theory. As far as which was harder, Physics just because I started GChem way back in the day. Summer after my freshman year of high school. I took Chem II in high school and then Chem here. Physics isn't hard, it's just not as easy for me. There wasn't a lot of electricity stuff, but you should know it, regardless. Mechanics questions were more deep than usual AAMC questions? Instead of asking "what", it asked "why". But yeah, the AAMC tests are very "what" type questions, while my test was "why". So don't think it will ask those straight-forward questions. It may, but be prepared for the theory. It totally threw me off, and I'm not surprised I got an 11 on VR after going through a very different PS.

Hope this helps... good luck!!

Thanks!!! How is midterm week going for you?? I only have one left tomorrow morning in Marketing. Hopefully it won't be too bad. Even if it is, we drop a test, so it's all good. 😀

I wouldn't get too excited about it, there's a good chance it was just a "bear rally", "dead-cat" bounce or whatever you want to call it. After a quick drop from 7,400 to under 6,800 there were bound to be some buyers move in.

This was exciting though(well at least well deserved anyway):

I dabble some, I can crash your club from time to time.

i think with enough of the negative news and several weeks to let it ride out, we will finally see good news from various places. first, obama said that nows a good time for stocks. china releases a second stim package, the banks are going to take a little bit longer to ride through the era but they should get less toxic with time.

all in all, i think the worst stuff has already happened. but thats just me, some people are way in deep and cannot see anything positive.

1. just because obama says "good time to buy stock" people aren't going to buy. yesterday was just a mini rally. remember obama is a harvard law graduate not a UPenn Economics graduate.

2. china only talked about a stim package but it's not set.

3. the worst is still yet to come and this administration is not making it any better.

ok...i will stop my political 2 cents now.

Some investors are just *****s. Like I remember when Steve Jobs announced his medical leave, Apple's stock dropped to a new 52 week low. (~$78/share). Three weeks later, the stock was ~$100/share... so a lot of the "smart" investors who didn't panic actually raked in quite a bit in the short term, while those who sold off stock in anticipation of Apple Inc. "crashing" lost just as much. That kind of mentality can't be blamed on politicians as much as the paranoid human condition. 😉

Can you imagine if only pre-meds invested in the market? You'd have the single largest collection of astute individuals participating in the most risky yet potentially lucrative profession. In other words, we'd all look like :scared: all day. Not to mention, the fact that we even attempted to invest in the market would somehow make its way to each of our medical applications, probably under the "extracurricular" column.

As far as if we've seen the worst parts already, I doubt it. When you pass a $787 billion "stimulus" package loaded with random provisions for things which shouldn't be our priority, and no one has a chance to even read/verify the numbers... you know that something bad is going to happen. Maybe not directly, but perhaps we as doctors will notice when Uncle Sam is taking an increasingly larger bite out of our paychecks/Medicare/Medicaid each year. Okay, now I'm done with my political rant.

Hello classmates!

I'm stranded in Clinton, MS. Bored... I'm here for a math competition. I'm the coolest kid ever, huh?

How was everyone's day?

ksmi. i use to do math club and science olympiad in high school =) we use to get extra credit for going to math club meeting so most of my high school class was in math club lol. =)

Oh Mu Alpha Theta in HS was the bomb.com. I loved it so much. My best friend and I actually met through it. We rocked the pairs competition. WOOO!

But this competition wasn't so fun. I was on a team of 4 and we had 15 problems to do. All them didn't want to do the "easy" Calculus stuff so I said I would. However, I haven't seen this stuff since high school, so it took me awhile to remember what I was supposed to be doing. The guy on the other team from our schools that did the same problems said that they were SSSOOOOOOO easy. And it made me feel very inferior. Like I did well for remembering stuff that I haven't seen in 3 years, while he tutors it every day.

Oh well, it's irrelevant. I know I got them right, and in a year and a little bit, I won't have to deal with other stuck up Math majors who think they are better than everyone else. I'll get to be in school with cool med students who are nice (hopefully... I'm trusting that whatever school I go to accepts the nice people).

I hope everyone else's day was better than mine! TGIF!! Today is the day to celebrate my score!!!!! Woo!!

"We get twice as much funding if there's a girl on the team. So think about it, 'cause we'd like to get jackets."

hahaha!!!! you got that from Mean Girls. That indian guy is ghetto. LOL

So I was looking at schools I wanted to apply to today, and I narrowed it down to a list of 17 (I'll probably narrow some more before actually applying). However, most are "top tier" schools. Right now, I just think I'd be happier at LSU than any others not on my list. I just don't know what to think. I don't want to be screwed because I didn't apply broadly. Is it wrong for me to assume I'll get into my state schools?? :lame:

I'm from Texas, so lucky for me, there are plenty of state schools and one private one (BCM). I actually didn't apply anywhere else but state schools, given that a.) in-state residents have a much higher chance of getting into a state school, and b.) the Texas medical center

Lol, you're an exception to my example though. Based on your stats, I think you should only apply to the Ivy Leagues + Hopkins, and let them battle it out for you.

Well I think you should swap out Brown for Dartmouth, because Brown is kind of very high on the early acceptance programs for high schoolers and other college affiliations. It also had some pretty grimey reviews on SDN from current students in terms of facilities and whatnot, especially for an 'ivy' it got bad remarks. Dartmouth from what I know is amazing all around.

The one outlier was Stanford. Thats the only school West of the Miss river for you lol. I just think you might get sick of interviews and than having to do one all the way out in Cali would be crazy since you will def def get into several schools on the eastern seaboard.

how do you feel about Georgetown? and also if you are going for Northwestern, why not give Pritzker a shot too, since its pretty awesome. Thoughts on Pitt?

No New York Love? just pick your favorite, prob Columbia/Sinai/Cornell and just cover that possibility incase you get the fever for the city.

Dont forget UMich, thats where House went.

yeeaaaa. Dmouth is amazing. speaking with first hand experience. definitely swap it out with Brown.

I'm been sitting on my couch in silence (no tv on, no music playing....which is just crazy for me) for the past 3 hours and here is how my time progressed...

1. Took a little drink to relax and wind down the day
2. After some web-comic surfing, i went to youtube and they recommended (based on previous viewing), that I watch a Charles Barkley moment on Inside the NBA on TNT
3. Kept clicking on related videos for like 30 more min, and then stumbled upon a Frank Caliendo scene from Inside the NBA (CLICK ME)
4. This transpired me into watching 30 more min of Frank Caliendo interviews
5. Which somehow inspired me into starting and finishing another draft of my PS in 1.5 hours.
6. Which prompted me to thinking i just struck gold with my PS.
7. And 7 bullet points cause 7 is my fav. number.

goodnight, SDN and c/o 2014.

I wonder the same thing- since I have a way better shot at my own state school than anywhere else, I wonder whether I should even waste the $$ applying to a bunch of other out-of-state 'backup' schools. then i remind myself that my stats are borderline, and i should cover my butt. but that's me. in your case, i wouldn't be too worried. as long as LSU knows you are applying because you love their school and not as a safety (even if you are, you won't make it sound that way!) i think they would definitely want you.

in other news, I took my first practice AAMC today! 10 BS, 11 verbal and 7 PS (haha.) it basically told me what I already know, which is 1) that grad school has prepared me well for bio, and i dont think that skipping orgo II is going to affect me that much, 2) that I like practicing verbal better than studying for actual science content- lol, and 3) I dread and fear physics, so I've not really cracked into the study materials for that yet. but i clearly need to.

i also haven't started reviewing gen chem yet, since I did well in the course I figured I'd retain some knowledge. but i missed ALL the stoichiometry questions!! haha. how dumb is that. so I guess I better put away my EK 101 passages awhile and do the stuff i hate (physics. ugh.)

UGH! Who else hates when you type a reply, and then it doesn't work? So let's try this again...

So I wish I would just make up my mind about schools and be done with it. I think I'm pretty OK with my list of 12 (I think) schools. But I'm still worried about my institutional action thingy... I climbed out my own window onto a roof that was used for tanning back in the day. It was like the antithesis of dangerous when it comes to institutional action stuff. But idk how med schools are gonna react to it. I don't think it's a big deal at all (because it's not). But are they really that obsessed with having the perfect, do no wrong, students that they'd reject me because of that?? I wish I could walk up into an adcom meeting and be like, here's the dealio, explain, and ask for a show of hands of those who would reject me because of it. *sigh*

In other news, I just got back from a cycling class. I've always heard that they are hard, and it was. But it was good!

I hope everyone's not too sleepy from losing an hour. Have a great rest of the day!!! 😀

I really, REALLY doubt that act will warrant a rejection. I know for the Texas schools (not sure about Baylor), they'll even dismiss an account of MIP (minor in possession). Your act wasn't bad at all, and no offense, but if I were an adcom member, I would laugh. College students will be college students, but when it comes down to it, your extracurriculars/numbers will speak for themselves. Now should you make a note of it on your application... well... that's a toss-up. I'm not sure if the "criminal background checks" medical schools do on their accepted class will stir up any trouble. If I were you, I'd say that your act was analogous to stealing some candy. 😉

PS - Come to Baylor. (Sorry, I had to).

i haven't been on here for awhile. where is everyone? i've been very busy with everything and i am guessing the same for everyone?

I guess so. I've been around, but no one else has. 🙁 I've missed everyone!!

wow ksmi that is fast! 🙂

I am feeling  today. too much homework!!!

haha... I was in class, bored and playing on SDN. New avatar, I see. Is that you?

I am feeling  today... that's the closest I could find to hyper...

Everyone else, WHERE ARE Y'ALL?? Did y'all desert us?? 🙁

that's me alright. ok...i really need to stop being an SDN ***** right now. need to [ ] - ion on my biochem study for tomorrow's exam.

i'm so cheesy with my concentrate word above. get it? LOL

Well I'm now inclined to agree: if that piece of **** citygroup can make $$$ then anyone can.

Edit: Except GM, it will be chpt. 11 FTW and we all know it.

haha... that took me awhile to fully understand. I was like... the concentration of nothing minus an ion... but good luck on the exam!!!

i never follow stock/analyst advice - go with the gut. all gm cars, and more specifically american cars are trash. i never owned one, i never will, and so i never purchased stock in the american auto industry.

but i love and buy almost everything else american, so thats why im going to end up doing pretty well investment wise.

ps check out petrol brazil or petrobras if you want to get in on the next big thing

so i took my biochem exam today.

first page was like WTF for me. I have never seen anything like it. but after that page i cruised through it. hope i ace it. :xf:

i'm feeling :lame: today.

why thank you.

i'm feeling :soexcited::soexcited:today.

1. yesterday i went to talk to my recommender, Dean of Educational Programs and interviewer, he told me that when I submit my app, let him know so he can give the Dean of Admissions a heads up on my app. he also told me my app will be flagged b/c i went to their summer medical program. they're close friends so i'm guessing that i have a great liason with the admissions board. I got a good vibe from that comment because I was afraid that my low gpa might not let me get pass the first cut.

2. my sister got accepted into a pharmacy school today!!! YAY!!! Now it's up to me to get into a medical school.
