Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Man, you guys have been busy in this thread. I am impressed 🙂

Yeah man - I really hate to say these things but you guys seriously need to find some hobbies, or video games, or something! Over 10,000 posts in less than a year is a bit scary! Do you realize how many posts that is in a day on average?

I feel like I might be seriously underestimating how intense med school is about to be. People keep telling me things like "man, enjoy your free time while you have it!" and "dude, you're going to be studying all the time!" and I feel like I might just be missing something and not fully comprehending what's about to happen to me

(this is where I'm hoping a current med student pops in and says "eh, it's not so bad")

I've heard that too, but not from med students. I think we'll be fine.

world series will go through philadelphia this year. rest of the NL should just bend over, take it and like what they are getting

Eh. Probably, but I would be real worried about Atl and St. Louis. Also, if you guys don't win your division I definitely would not count on the wild card.

~30/day, divided by 15 or so regular posters. So like 2/day each?

:hello:

Been a few days since I was here! But I did put those days to good use - finished star craft 2 campaign on Hard. Played for literally 2 days straight 😀 Now, off to WI for a few days, then I move to philly!

So excited 👍 Mainly for the rockband parties at my apt

I posted this elsewhere:

AL
NYY
Twins
Rangers
TB in by the WC.

NL
Philly
St. Louis
gigantes if the bullpen becomes solid through a trade/DL activation, otherwise pads
WC: Pads if SF wins the division, Atl if Pads win the division

Got annoyed with the 140 pound TV today, so it's gone 😎 Watching Craigslist for a smaller one... Also, moving is a pain in the butt. How did I acquire so much junk without realizing it? Even after giving away several large items on Craigslist, recycling thousands of pages of stuff from undergrad, and making three trips to Goodwill (with a forthcoming fourth), it's still so. much. stuff. It seems the best options are to be poor and own no stuff, or be so rich that full-service movers are affordable. We plan on evaluating each item as we unpack it to decide whether it gets fully unpacked or thrown in the give away pile. I'm hoping for a big give away pile 🙂

I need the internet for income, so I'm on it all the time. And I leave a tab open for SDN usually.= lots of posts.

I need to get around to buying that.

trying to find good friends in a new place is like mad work

1. you gotta go out with a ****load of peopple, spend some dolo, toss things around
2. figure out who has money, similiar interests, independent and doesnt have a hard time paying for his/her own ****
3. figuring out which girls you wanna tap, so you dont try too hard with them
4. persistancy and execution

Twins? Blasphemy!

that stinks ksmi 🙁 does he have any collaborators at washu you could try out?

i'm not sure how i'm going to find a new lab... i'm not really sure what kind of doctor i want to be haha, it feels like the pressure to decide on a specialty is already here with the pressure to choose a lab

if i were to just do MD, i would pick a lab that produces a ****load of papers and hope that i get my name in one.

but if you are planning to do research, i would look for a mentor and a great group of post docs

i had never watched jersey shore before, but i tried watching last night. i literally could not stand it for longer than 20 seconds and i changed the channel

.. i'm not really sure what kind of doctor i want to beb
Do you have any favs?

Ksmi - sorry to be ignorant here but when your PI leaves, does that mean the the lab dismantles? or does it keep going with a new PI? If I remember right, you choose WashU based on the PI so I'm sorry to hear that...

Twins? Blasphemy!

twinkies got matt capps😱 he has a lot of innings on his arm, but he's great in the bullpen. he should have been on the phils (bp being such a weak point)

AL
Yankees
Rangers (probably will crumble when joshua starts shooting up again)
Twins/White Sox (not sure on either. love alex rios and the chi rotation, but the twins are great too when healthy)
TB test

NL
Phillies (rest of the division is crap, cant finish, mets are nose diving, braves are losing)
Padres (best pitching top to bottom in the league, in my opinion)
Cardinals (will get swept again)
Wild card - who the **** cares

That's kind of up in the air right now. We have a PhD in the lab so it could possibly just become his lab. Not sure.

And I didn't pick WashU for my PI. But the opportunity to work in his lab was a pro of the school.

most of the money on his grants are portable, so he will be able to take a good amount of the people to chicago. i'm sure the department will recruit some other faculty to replace him but obviously the research/lab will be completely different

if he's getting appointed dean, then it probably means that he will have senior scientists/research associates under him that are probably capable of writing his new grants. the tough thing is that these people and post-docs are usually international people (esp on the coasts) who are on work visas. their spouses and kids might have established a life in st louis but they will have to move with their boss to a different city with a much higher cost of living if they want to live in the country. or start interviewing for new jobs

So I randomly got a PM from a person who just joined SDN today and sent a lengthy message asking me to read their personal statement since they've seen people "volunteer to read personal statements" Yet, I've never put my name on the personal statement list so I think it's kinda bizarre that they chose me out of all the possible names on SDN.

(Also called me a medical student though my status says otherwise. Unless they're stalking me.... Hi Stalker!! *waves* )

i got that too. i am pretty sure if you give this person your email you'll be getting an attachment with a virus rather than a PS

I received a similar one. Maybe they're just stalking this thread and realized that we're totally awesome in 2014.

True to that. My mom was an international post doc and she had to move from Baltimore to Chicago with her boss. Now it is even more difficult to find a job on a visa, so most people have to follow their PI.
