Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm not 100% sure, but unless your parents aren't filing with you as a dependant (which they probably are if you're a full time student, you have their health insurance, etc.) then you have to include your parents income.

Anyways, the cutoff is 3x poverty which is somewhere around 65,000 for a 2 parent household. I could be really wrong about all this, I haven't looked up anything for 6 months but I thought I'd let you know what I remember.

Ok thanks! Ya, I needed to put my parents income as well, but there was a section for my information too? I don't know, I'll try and call them tomorrow to get a more clear answer on what to put. Thanks!

I applied for the fee assistance. For a family of four, you cannot make over $63000, Your parents info is required no matter what, whether they claim you or not. It covers primary for 13 schools and the MCAT fee is reduced to $85.

The FAP is cool for those that qualify, but it's fairly strict.

Example: I make less than 3x poverty which is like 30,000 for a single person if I remember correctly.

I've been supporting myself since 2003, but the FAP still requires my parents' income level. They said there was no way they could give me funding without including my parents' income (which would put me out of the bracket) unless I get a legal document saying that I'm divorced from my parents.

I haven't been claimed on my parents' tax statement since 2003! It's not a big deal though, when I started raising a fuss about it with my parents, they said they'd pay for me. 😀

Ya that stinks. I'm figured I have a shot since my dad's income AGI this year was a negative number? Thanks for the info everyone!

ksmi- well hello

Gator - Glad someone filled you in on my fallacies. If you aren't applying until after April 15 then I'm sure you'll be set unless you made bank yourself.

Anyone finding themselves totally unable to concentrate on current classes? I have a pchem test in like 3 hours and I can't even think about anything but applying this summer haha

Wait, so even if you aren't a dependent, they combine your income and your parents, and then determine if that's 3x poverty level?

Wait, so making less than 30k a year, you could qualify for this FAP?

Yes, but only if you're divorced from your parents. Since you have to include your parents' income regardless of whether you're claimed as a dependent, I think it automatically bumps you into the family of three level (or however big your family is). I am guessing that would be about $50k.

Don't quote me on the family of three info, but I do know that if you're divorced from your parents or somehow legally separated and you make < $30k (or thereabouts) you qualify.

If you get on the FAP website, it gives you a little more info. http://www.aamc.org/students/applying/fap/ or you can email them. They got back to me in like 2 or 3 days when I asked about my situation.

Oh, you changed it. I think that's right. Not sure if it's combined or if there's some other way of factoring in your parents' income.

Thanks a lot. I've been checking out that link you sent me and some other sites, and it seems like even if I am factored in with my family, we should still qualify.

It does seem kind of stupid though that they factor in your parents income if they aren't filing you as a dependent.

Yeah, it's been hard, but I'm on break right now. I'm using the time to attack my app. stuff so that I don't worry about it for the rest of the semester. Only 4 weeks left. woot! After the semester is over, I'll throw myself back into AMCAS and such. I want to apply pretty early.

:luck: Good luch on your test!!!

You graduating in may?🙂

I'm graduating in December. Woot!👍
Gives me an entire semester and the summer to do whatever the hell I want before medical school.

Nope. I still have another whole year left. 🙁 But I don't have many classes left to take. So hopefully it won't be too bad.

Ahh, ok. I took a whole bunch of lengthy lab courses when I was interviewing during the first cycle. That was all kinds of hell.👎laugh:

I was done with labs when I was a sophomore. Yay for not being a bio/chem major! I'm taking like 4 courses next semester which is way less than usual. And no class on Tuesday or Thursday. I'm so stoked!

Yeah, this is going to be a bit of a problem for me next semester during interview season.

But you have all the time in the world after you graduate. I figure that every year people apply for med school, so every year people have to miss classes. Lab professors should be used to it by now. Hopefully, my math professors will be cool about it, not many pre-meds in math, I expect. And they aren't too happy that I'm not going into math. 🙁

I had my last lab on Wednesday (besides my thesis..)!!! I will just be doing research next year, so I just hope I don't end up with a time-sensitive project while I'm doing interviews.

You changed your avatar, ksmi!

You are quite observant. 😛 I got tired of the old one. I can only look at a certain picture of me for so long. I don't know how I feel about this one though, so I'm on a search to find a better one.

Edit: search done... 🙂

If youre parents shows a negative AGI on their taxes then yes assuming you dont make a ton. Also remember they will take into account your moms income too (assuming you know her). Actually, THE BEST part about FAP no one mentioned yet. Almost every secondary is free!!!!!!! thats what absolutely cuts down on application costs. Applying to 37 schools this year is going to run me about 970 dollars inclduing primary and secondary fees...thats not including travel costs which of course will raise that but still its great!! being dirt poor finally paid off.....lol

:welcome: Elijah to the bestest thread in the history of SDN! 😛 That's great that the applications aren't gonna be much out of pocket for you. Any idea where you are applying yet? I'm trying not to apply too many places because I know those secondary costs are gonna add up. 🙁

With your stats ksmi, a handful should suffice.👍

The problem is just picking which handful. 🙁 You have quite a list on your mdapps. How many schools is that? I'm too lazy to count right now.

It's 45. But yeah, I'm definitely cutting some out, I want to get down to around 30.
I agree picking them are hard. They all look so delicious.

It's obviously awesome enough for all you 13ers to hang out her all the time. 😛
Merely assimilating.

Holy crap. The pre-allo forum just gets increasingly insane each year.

If you work full-time or have other full-time engagements and are super picky about exactly which sets of words go where, 45 is a little rough, even with a fair amount of recycling, believe me.

If you start writing them early based on last year's prompts, though, you might have better luck than I did.👍

Do you have to report both parents income if your parents are divorced, and you are only supported by one?

All parents income must be reported no matter what, divorced independant it does not matter. Its really dumb but I went through a ton of hoops on this. Unless your parents are dead, you dont know where they are (meaning maybe they left you at 2 and you never talk to them), or you are emancipated, then you have no choice but to report them. For example, Im 24, have a wife and child, and my mom hasnt supported me in any way since 18. Im independant as far as financial aid is concerned etc etc...yet they still wanted my parents income. I dont know where my dad is so they let me slide on that but thats all.

Thanks😉! Anyways I already narrowed it down to about 37 schools, I may drop or add 1-2 more just for fun but I basically have my list narrowed down. If I didnt have FAP id honestly probbaly not even apply to med school...that or id have to apply like like 5 schools and pray.....I just looked at your stats and I was floored lol. I dont think ive ever seen something like that. Thats amazing it should be easy for you! congrats. I should make a mdapps file, but after looking at yours mine seems too pathetic:laugh:

Thanks. 😳 I hope it really does work out like everyone seems to think it will for me. And you should make a mdapps. It's super great for keeping track of things, especially when the app season rolls along. Although I do plan on having another excel spreadsheet all color-coded and such. But it'll be nice to have two places, especially if my hard drive crashes, I'll still have my mdapps.

160+24x30+90x25+500x6
=160+720+2250+3000
=6130

This assumes that:
a) your average secondary comes to $90 (it depends on which schools you pick)
b) you get six interviews
c) you manage to spend $500 in transportation/lodging per city (i.e. no student hosts, no tickets on southwest, etc)

this process is ridiculous !!!

this process is ridiculous !!!

The thought of that much $$$ makes me want to :barf:

I have no idea how I'm going to afford it. Yeah for credit cards I guess... 🙁

Yeah I really don't want to spend so much money on airfare. Hopefully I will be accepted to my top choices early on so I don't have to fly around the country for interviews.

any mac users out there? what browser are you planning to fill out amcas with? i have an older version of netscape and i know that works, but it's a dinosaur and annoying.

also- i tried the user agent switching trick in safari and firefox, but it only works like 1 in 50 tries which doesn't make sense- anyone know why that might be?

Macs confuse the hell out of me.

Does anyone know how the Fee Assistance Program works? What does it cover? How strict are they? I started filling it out, and am stuck on the non-taxable income or whatever for myself over the last year. I called and they said that's money from aid, parent's ect, but I'm not going to have documentation showing my parents gave me this money or whatnot? Any advice? Thanks!
It seems that your question has been answered for the most part, but I would add that some schools waive their 2ndary fee and some schools give you travel subsidies (more generous subsidies) if you get FAP.

macs are wonderful, this coming from a pc-to-mac convert. never any problems, viruses, and no useless crap. and they are, in fact, not confusing at all.

i guess ill just deal with netscape.

Woot! I just finished all my paperwork for my premed committee. :woot: Well, except my CV. I need to update it and format it like they want, but that shouldn't take too long.

Macs are nice, but I've seen too many problems with Mac files being opened on a PC via email and such. I don't know how many times I've had to save and email my best friend's stuff since she has a Mac. I'll stick with my PC. 😀

I am a convert also. I used Firefox to fill out AMCAS, and it never gave me any problems whatsoever.😀

hmm funkydrmonkey why did you remove your mdapps link. i always used it as a reference.

i use both. my laptops are and probably always will be a mac- it's just to easy to browse the internet, watch mlb.tv, email, etc without worry about all the junk. i keep a pc desktop for labs and research though

Are Macs really that easier to use? All my friends say it is. But I used it in the past and I still liked PC better. But I'm thinking of buying a Macbook before medical school. What do you guys think?

I'm also kind of wary about Apple products. IMO, they seem to sacrifice quality for aesthetics.
Ipod- :cough, cough:
