👎thumbdown👎 weak sauce . . . i don't like this either. i mean its bad enough having to get people to WRITE them for you, now you have to make them do this too? what about the people who have committee letters?

i guess maybe new schools must get a lot of apps from borderline applicants

I just refresh my SDN account page so it only shows the schools I'm applying to.

Although I guess for you that's pretty much the whole forum anyway. Hehe.
 
so I promised my retired grandparents I'd apply somewhere in Florida. I checked FIU and it looks like they are giving preference to instaters now (they didn't last year IIRC.) is there any school in FL where out of staters have a decent shot? does Miami still screen for 3.6+?

edited to add: in case anyone is curious i looked it up and apparently they send secondaries to everyone now

edited one more time to add: I thought this was pretty funny on Miami's FAQ page-
They told me at the University of Florida that I would have to learn Spanish to go to medical school in Miami. Is that true? Nuestros Buenos amigos en la Universidad de Florida no saben de lo que hablan.

ya I'm not sure why they're doing it but it doesn't really seem like the best idea to me-you'd think they would want to encourage applications and try to get decent numbers for their first class rather than discouraging people from applying b/c they know they'll have to bother letter writers.

No judgement here🙂 I won't be surprised if in a month you're complaining about how many interview invites you've received and how much school you'll have to miss though haha.

uh oh we don't want a dead redrower! I guess if that happened you could start picking and choosing where you actually want to attend interviews and withdraw from any schools that aren't high on your list.

Best shots in order:

Miami, Florida, UCF (prob accept more OOS percentage but only 60 in the class), USF, FIU, FSU (virtually no chance)

i pretty much figured that Miami is my only "real" chance (real chance being relative, it's probably still pretty slim, lol.) unless I apply DO.

i got so p|ssed hearing about interviews being dished out cause all i need to be complete at some of these schools is my damn committee letter. called the committee up today, told them that going through them was the worst decision id made so far in this process

lol they werent very happy with that 😛

ahha dude maybe its not the best idea to piss off the people writing your letter? Or maybe im misunderstanding how they work...either way im glad my school has no committee, it seems its a pain in the ass.

Maybe its because the UCs already have an acceptance for us😛. Serious though its the same for me and probably most people who dont have some pretty sick applications. After looking at some of the peeps who are getting interviews, its pretty obvious why most of us dont have one lol.

You know blue I was talking to a friend today who was accepted to UCI last year, he said he often got this question at an interview @ OOS schools "Why should we bother accepting you when as soon as a UC school accepts you, you will not attend here?" I thought that was utter crap to ask a student that but :shrug:....i hope no one asks me that bull****.

I think he means that schools like suny buffalo, rochester, pitt, etc etc did not give him an early interview invite.

No, I mean 4 schools have already started sending out invites, and I haven't gotten any yet.

they asked for my name. i told them my name was irrelevant and that they should treat me simply as a disgruntled premed😀

they asked me if i would at least disclose when i was AMCAS verified. i obliged. they say it should be up thursday or friday. which means if its not, they get another call from the disgruntled premed 😛

I would apply to 40 if I could afford it, so I wouldn't feel bad about it at all.


On another note, my PI is 11 days late submitting my LOR... :wtf:

oh that's good it'll be up by the end of the week, at least and your school isn't like the ones that make people wait until the end of August. and maybe you should change your screen name from redrower to thedisgruntledpremed lol.

Well, I got and finished Vermont's secondary today, I just need to put in the credit card number. I love easy secondaries.
Still have that other one just chilling, might finish it tonight, might not.

That vermont 2ndary was awesome!🙂. though wasnt it odd how they want to know the population of the places you lived in? I guess they are looking for people who might have experience in maybe smaller rural areas? And are you still putting off nyu 😛?

yeah redrower, you're in a much better spot than i am...this is my school's official statement -

"We do not guarantee any particular send date to any applicant but can assure you that your committee letter packet will be send by the end of the summer of 2009. We assure you that this time frame will not place you at a competitive disadvantage in the admissions process. Please do not call our office regarding the status of your letters."

end of the summer?!?! really???

I know, I love the ones that take literally 5 mins! anyone else think it's kinda fun to watch on mdapps as your number of complete schools increases and the number of schools you have left to do dwindles?😳

ugh that sucks I'm sorry. I love how they try to assure you that it won't put you at a disadvantage, they must not be very knowledgable about the whole process huh?

haha i know right? i nominate my school as having one of the worst pre-med advising offices ever.
 
i told them that theyre full of sh|t for claiming were not at a disadvantage (in a much more PC manner of course 😀). she asked me how i could possibly know this. i told her that many of my friends (lovely, now im referring to SDNers as my friends... 😛) have been receiving interview invites and that i was aware that there are only so many interview slots available. she didnt exactly know what to say other than to assure me i wouldnt be at a disadvantage...these people are legit ******ed

Yes, I am. Don't judge me. :laugh: You must be holding me to my claims.
It was nice for me filling out the residency places because I've only lived in one place my whole life. Population=11,260 (is that small? not sure)
I mean, should I count the school years when I live Baton Rouge? I don't know how I would write that.

My pre-med advisor made stuff up all the time. I can't stand that woman. You could watch the wheels turning when you ask her a question, too bad they never rolled by a good answer or one backed up by anything other than her opinion.
 
Our school doesn't even have a pre-med advisor. My advisor is SDN.👍

I wrote every place, which is like 12:scared::scared:. Hopefully they dont think something is wrong with me ahha...😛
