Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
OK, cool. How did you get a host? I didn't know they had them.

Bamtuba, the medical school is at the Wake Forest University Medical Center, not the undergrad campus, correct?

Yes. The school is a part of the Baptist Hospital, not the college.

A couple of words of wisdom: plan extra time for getting lost in the hospital. The directions they give you are not really useful. Also, make sure you get to talk to a fourth-year student. The second years are very helpful, but the insight of our tour guide was the best part of the day.

And if anyone decides to get a hotel, I would recommend the Wingate by Wyndham. It's just a few minutes from the school and a straight shot down I-40. Also cheap with good free parking. Oh the things you'll appreciate once you have interviewed in DC...

:luck:

anyone tired of scheduling flights and hotels and ****. i work, so money isnt the biggest issue but finding flights that leave from philly at 8 pm (so i can work the entire day) and that return at a reasonable time that day so I can go back to work at 7 the next day is tough. as well as trying to save a couple of pennies on hotels that provide hotel service to/from airport and to/from the school and whatnot

Yeah it's annoying, but I guess it's a good problem to have. I think I'm gonna turn down interviews to Emory and UNC (if I get this one) if I get in somewhere I like before then. I just don't think I'll love those as much.

yea just come to penn, you would like it here (i still have to apply i've been a bum and my PIs want me to do md/phd here). the campus is crazy but in a east coast i have the power way. dont even wait for the interview invite, send in your deposit and show up next year

Yeah, it's really annoying trying to make flights work on your schedule when they're obviously not meant for that.

As far as hotels go, I just wish I would have done more research before booking the ones I fly to. I was in a rush and wanted to make a package deal out of them, but ended up with hotels that are a lot further away from the school than I had wanted. Oh well.

If you end up turning down Emory, tell them to give your interview to me.

yea sometimes the school emails out list of hotels that provide discounts for applicants and those discounts are pretty big at times, somewhere frmo $30-$50 a night off

I'm staying at the Hawthorne Inn in Winston Salem. It's like a 15 minutes walk from the transit hub and they have a shuttle to the med school every hour. Pretty cheap too.

Speaking of all this, does anyone know how to get from Pitt to Columbus? There has to be some sort of bus or something. Don't look it up for me, I'm just being lazy. If you know off the top of your head.

Hey, ksmi, any last minute tips for my interview tomorrow?

Hmm, pick your tour guide's brain about anything and everything. You'll have a lot of downtime and the tour guides were super nice and helpful when I was waiting for my interviews. Um as far as interviews, make sure you bring up your high points if the interviewer doesn't. They won't really remember a lot about you since they all interview like 5 people. Other than that, just be happy and confident and personable. That's the thing about having an interviewer that interviews more than one person in a day. I suspect they compare us, so make yourself stand out.

Also, in the packet you get, you'll have the evaluation sheets that they'll use, so give those a once over so that you can hit on all the stuff they'll be looking for.

Good luck!!!! :luck:

Thank you, that's exactly what I was looking for. 😀

there is DEF a greyhound bus. also, check amtrak

Wow, my hotel has a full kitchen and a living room w/ fireplace. Pimpin'.
It also has a shuttle to the hospital.

So, I just bought $100 of beer for my roommate since they don't sell it in LA. It was a whole shopping cart of beer = beautiful.

Now, I'm going to find some food.

they don't sell beer in LA, or they don't sell your roommate's favorite kind of beer in LA?

So I have to send a resume to LSU-Shreveport... this is lame.

that is total lame sauce.

I was just using my crappy keychain bottle opener and it exploded the beer all over the place and onto me. 🙁

And the beer is flat. 🙁

aw, sad. i ALWAYS think that beers are twist-off, and i can't tell you how many hand gashes i've gotten from trying to open beers with my bare hands. 'cause i'm dumb like that.

Oh no, they definitely sell beer in LA, it's just that a lot of it is kinda crappy and they don't have many microbrews.

He likes Breckenridge and New Belgium breweries, and they don't ship to LA (I think state law makes certain alcohols illegal to ship or sell there), so when he heard I was coming to Houston, he gave me some cash and said buy me as much beer as you can.
I'm also experimenting with those beers, too.

ah. well, i really like new belgium. i also like brooklyn brewery and magic hat. magic hat is my all time fave. although sometimes a good rolling rock really hits the spot if i'm not feeling fancy 🙂

ooooh, i'm almost at 2200! which means i'm almost at 2222! i have to work hard tomorrow to get there because this weekend is rosh hashannah so i won't be around.

2200!

brooklyn blunderbuss makes great bear

magic hat is good too

flying fish near south jersey is awesome (kinda like brooklynblunderbuss)

portland and philly are great place for microbrews

Speaking of beer. I have 6 bud selects in my fridge😕. That's all the alcohol in my apartment.

Possibly the most pitiful selection of alcohol I've ever had since like I was 15.

This I will have to fix.

the best main stream lager to me is yuengling. theres a hometown bias obviously for philly product but i like. sam adams cherry wheat is great too, summer ale also. havent had beer in forever

will have some before jennifers body/sorority row back to back movie night tomorrow

sierra nevada is amazing too

Jimmer if you ever have free time, you HAVE to go to mad4 at Pitt, that is a great bar, half price beer with sick microbrews (incl sierra nevada, brooklynblunderbuss, magic hat, flying fish, etc etc) and a sick "big azz margarita". ask one of the students. its a great convo

yeeees yuengling!!! last year my roommates and i bought 3 cases of that stuff at costco. it was AMAZING and didn't last nearly as long as we thought it would 😎

I haven't really liked any Sierra Nevadas I've tried so far. I don't think I really have a favorite microbrew other than Abita, but a lot of the places I've tried can make awesome stuff and really crappy stuff, too.

aight, i'm out. don't have too much fun discussing beer without me.

I love Sam Adams Cherry Wheat! Have you tried their fairly new (at least to my region) Blackberry Wit? It really doesn't have that much blackberry, but just enough to give some life to the classic Belgian Wit flavor.

dude im going to get drunk alone and wander the streets in the cult town of Burlington, Vermont after my interview. its going to be awesome.

Is that the full name of it?

Finally in DC and settled in my room. Just poppin' in to say HI! and then G'night... I have a meeting at 8 am, so I'm gonna try to get some shut eye right now....

Oh, it's Thursday. That means it's time for top 10 games of the weekend:

1. NYG vs Dallas
2. Giants vs Dodgers
3. Fresno State vs Boise State
4. Rockies vs Dbacks
5. Seahawks vs Niners
6. Saints vs Eagles.
7. Utah vs Oregon
8. Falcons vs Panthers
8. Texas Tech vs Texas
10. Cal vs Minnesota

no Jets New England? that game seems to be shaping up to be competitive

I have a feeling that the Panthers season is done

Yeah, I was thinking about that one but I didn't have a spot for it. I'd actually probably rather watch that than Cal vs Minnesota though.

Uh oh! I have a problem. I don't have a nice bag or something to put walking shoes in....what do I do? I have a backpack....which definitely looks like a backpack. And I have to walk about 4 blocks to get to the building from my hotel....not to mention spending the whole day in heels would kill me since I NEVER wear heels. I could sport them for a couple hours...or I could just wear my comfy shoes that totally don't go with my outfit.

Right now, I'm thinking the not matching shoes may be lest noticable than the random backpack....

:bang:

A lot of people who are catching flights after the interview will probably leave stuff in the admission's office. I would just take the backpack and leave it with everybody's stuff.

That. almost everyone will be leaving something in the adm. office

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being absolutely exhasuted, I'm at 10. I'm so tired of airplane flights now.

my top 10 games (in no particular order):

Cincinnati v Oregon St
Nebraska v Va Tech
Florida v Tennessee (just to see how badly TN loses)
Saints v Eagles
Cowboys v Giants
Jets v Patriots
Georgia v Arkansas
USC v Washington
Florida St v BYU
Oregon v Utah
