Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nice im thinking about broccoli or green beans. not really thinking about them as in like fantasizing about it, but acknowledging that i need to get some

there was this kid who had a choice at an optional student interview at my state school and he took so long debating whether he should take it or not. he was scared whether or not it would hurt his chances

UMDNJ? How was that btw? I have mine on Monday.

yup NJMed.

it was good, i really enjoyed the interview. one faculty interview one student (optional) you may or may not get that optional one

faculty interview we talked about mostly my app/activities
talked about how to reach out to patients who might be non-compliant with meds
why they might be non compliant
which obviously lead to healthcare

student interview was still formal
why here
why medicine
what kind of medicine
what kind of a student will you be, how to manage stress
strength/weakness

the standard interview basically, revolving around your app and the clinical side, rather than research

np, its my personal belief that being articulate is a desired attribute in aspiring physicians or bounty hunters

so . . . once news starts coming out on the 15th and people start withdrawing apps, do you think that means a surge of interview invites for people like me (middle of the pack??)

hope so 👍

Id think so? But who knows really as idk how many people just want to keep invites and acceptances for the sack of doing it or for financial aid. I know me personally if I hear back from a few of my schools i will be withdrawing from many of my schools and cancelling a few of my interviews that are in nov. Also committes dont meet that often so the "flood" if it happens may not occur asap?

+1.

there maybe a couple of school i can think of withdrawing (most of my remaining ones are mstp anyway)

but im not sure if there will be a flood though. doesnt that depend on the # of interviews left to give out? that would obviously depend on the school, but looking at michigans website, they seemed to have given out 60-70% already (i dont know why i look at their website but i guess its one school thats pretty transparent, it doesnt equate to all schools obviously)

Maybe at so-called "safety schools" there will be interview cancellations. For instance, NYMC, maybe?

But I think the only real "surge" of invites is the one that comes right at the start of the cycle. In other words, we are already past any "surges" but I do think that there will continue to be a steady trickle of invites for the next few months...

I have 7 interviews out of 14 possible, and honestly, I will be surprised if I get more than one or two more...

so how common do you folks think this method is:

a director told me that the program would be essentially happy with most if not all of the interviewed candidates (which seems reasonable - otherwise why interview them?). therefore, he said, they send fall acceptances to only those candidates who appeared sincerely interested and most likely to accept. I suppose this makes sense, but I just wonder how good they are at guaging whether people want to attend or not.

my PI interviews at penn, he tells me all the time that all us kids are exactly the same and 99.9% dont stand out. he usually recommends pleasant conversations slash the ones that look comfortable in the schools environment

Totally depends where this school is on the food chain.

I might believe that for a school that is way down the ladder in, for example, the USNews rankings, if it is even listed. You know, average state schools, etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's more common than we might think. I was completely shut out by my "lower-tier" state schools. Who knows how they make that call

not a fan of talking about med school admission tactics and what not but here are some stuff i have heard from different ppl on the committee that i have randomly talked to or through my parents

1. interview is to weed out the weirdos (i dont think there is many)
2. dont be too arrogant
3. there is a sliding scale for your gpa depending on ugrad (at least at penn, pitt and temple)
4. if they dont ask you tough questions, they aren't interested in you (i dont know if thats true) - so try to namedrop people or throw them off
5. if applying mstp contact PIs

as far as the school ranking goes, i've heard what i wrote above from mstp programs - all fully funded, and interview maybe 40 people - and they can probably pick at least 40 fairly decent people to interview. so for mstp, does that make the strategy to tell them how much you love their school, and to say that to any school? me thinks yes.

just played a ridiculous game of 2k10 on live with some bum. he just kept driving kobe to the basket or dishing to artest for a 3. i got kobe into foul trouble, so i was able to tie the game and take it overtime.....where my blazers utterly melted and i lost. 🙁

one time i thought i beat the lakers with my sixers

turned out i only played 3 quarters and just left the ps3 open and the dude beat me in the 4th when i wasnt even playing

i heard some people have to do their own autoclaves? does any one have experience with this? we usually just leave empty tip boxes or anything else that we might need autoclaved (and filled) and someone usually comes by and does this every couple of hours

That point scares me because I've only been asked a tough question in two of my interviews....

yea i havent really had any tough questions

but tough is relative. some people could think vin diesel is tough, others think he's just weird

How nice!

Nope. It's all me. :lame:

i think the money for the tech comes from combined funding from all the PIs though (a very small part of each grant)

nah i think i was playing Live a couple of years ago i think (before Pau). i had the sixers w/o AI though.

i find myself usually trying to come up with random stats (like triple doubles when im playing with lebron or kidd) rather than playing good ball.

That point scares me because I've only been asked a tough question in two of my interviews....

Yeah, I've only had like 1 hard interviewer. Tough questions in just that one I think. But I could see how others might perceive some of the questions I was asked as tough. Guess we'll see what happens.

Haha I did that all the time too.

kobe is. obviously.

and artest is great from 3

Well obviously, Artest is a great shooter 🙄

How are my Spurs and DeJuan Blair specifically?

Yeah, I've only had like 1 hard interviewer. Tough questions in just that one I think. But I could see how others might perceive some of the questions I was asked as tough. Guess we'll see what happens.

I really don't buy that; the vast majority of my interviews were really laid back.

i agree. my parents googled some questions and they freaked out cuz they thought they were tough

they were like why medicine? you can't just say its cuz you have no other talent...

thats normal. people fly home on sundays. cheapest days to fly are usually tuesday and thursday

wait, you just drop a bin of stuff and leave, and it gets magically autoclaved? weak. wait again - i just reread that. you don't even fill your own boxes!?! 😱 bizarre. all our labs buy our own supplies - often different styles/brands of tips - and fill our own boxes. and sometimes, if i'm in the mood, i'll just fill a box steril-ly so i don't have to autoclave something before i need. but when i have time, i like the autoclave. it's like opening a giant submarine door.

That point scares me because I've only been asked a tough question in two of my interviews....
yeah. well...i seem to recall at least a few schools that have more structured interview questions, so it in those cases the "tough question" wouldn't apply

Hopefully that isn't true.
