Yuck. My hard drive crashed (broke...it rattled) a few weeks back. I tried everything to save it, even freezing it at -80 C. Despite all my best efforts...blah blah.

The lesson that I learned - you should back up EVERYTHING on your computer, including those precious, frequently used folders on your DESKTOP. It was sad. 😱 So. Everybody, update those important files today, and every other day. 🙂

well, you see I too have been proclaimed royalty. Although this was some random girl and not the SO, you can clearly see the 'catholic crown' and 'mace of majesty' as noted by google.

Not really, most of the first draft was just babble as I tried to get everything written out. When I looked at it afterwards and figured out what I was really trying to say, it was much easier to rewrite things in five words instead of fifty.

I'm really stuck at the 5800 mark though. Everything that's in there I want to be in there how it's written, so I don't know where to cut... 🙁

Thanks ksmi!! For those talking about the PS, I started a draft and its 3760 with spaces (does AMCAS count spaces?) I dont think I know what to say to the admissions committees!!

I started mine early because I was anxious about the cycle and needed to feel I was doing something productive. I'm glad I did though, as it has been a lot harder to write than I thought. Actually, not so much hard as time consuming. I've found that whenever I try and force things along, all I write is crap. So, I've just been letting things work themselves out "naturally." It's working... but I've been at it for over two months now... 🙄

Yes, there's absolutely no way to write all that you mean to say effectively in a weekend. You have to do a lot of inner thinking, and it just doesn't come out all at once. I think it's productive to keep a running outline for a few weeks. Then once your outline is full enough, you can write a draft. The actual draft didn't take me too long, but the outline takes a while to think about.

I don't know though, maybe someone else can sit down for an hour and hammer out a perfect P.S. That person would be a hell of a lot more versed in finding their inner motivations than I am.

me too. i spent about a month just word vomiting and ended up with pages and pages of ramblings, most of which were really repetitive, irrelevant, inappropriate for PS purposes, or generally not useful. but at a certain point i pulled what i thought were the good bits from all those pages and started to string a coherent PS together. i actually came up with a draft, revised it a bit, and then started over again with a new slant. it's going pretty well, i guess... i would highly recommend the freewriting approach for those who are stuck.

This is exactly what I did. I would also recommend it to anyone having trouble figuring out what to say.
 
Well, I'm done with my PS for about a week. I want to leave it and then come back to it later.

I should also start sending it to some SNDers for feedback pretty soon.

I'm with you brother. My pre-med advisor asked how my essays were coming earlier this week. They're still coming.

Man, it was a rough day. Got rocked pretty good by an exam this morning. Got the reviews back on a paper when I checked my email when I got back; they beat the thing with a big stick. 😱 Already mentally exhausted, talked to my boss on the phone for an hour thinking some of the things we have to do over the next thirty days; we got a box and a half of work to do. 👎

Lay down. 😴 Wake up thirty minutes ago to my buddy calling me. "Wake the f up, stop groaning, and get your Lollapalooza ticket." Wake up. Drop 200 bones. Now I am feeling great, pretty stoked about it. 😀 At least I got something done today.

Any one else headed to Chicago for Lolla this summer?

I also got rocked and I'm still considering Lolla. My GF lives in lake forest so it's not like it would cost me anything more than the tickets but.... yeah.

edit: any washUians here who want to sublease me their apartment this summer? 😀
 
so i worked on my PS a lot today and i'm really happy with it now. yay! also my mom (a writer) read it and thinks it's great. the only problem? it's 5,700 characters 🙁

bleh... I'm tired of thinking about med school application stuff. Today was an overwhelming day. I really shouldn't have taken 8 classes this semester.
 
i've PMed a handful of SDNers with my PS but onely one has responded so far (thanks, shemarty!). it's been a couple of weeks but i can continue to be patient. it's nice that they offer to do this 🙂

secretly i miss school!! i loved my classes.. and all of the events on grounds..sorry have been a bit MIA lately..gearing up for may 2nd mcat =)

I hit that way too many times this morning. (that's what he said).

Don't worry, i miss class too. I'm only in one class and I kinda liked the old days of working on homework every night. Grad school in general is a little too relaxed for me. I can't really psych myself up enough to get a lot of work done these days. Research is frustrating sometimes.

Good news though, our lab got a huge grant for a super-high speed camera (300 million frams/sec)! Testing it out today...
