let me do some recruting in my may mcat thread =) i think as soon as app season starts we will get more ppl..=)

i think this thread and the may thread are the few threads i visit because some people can be so mean on some of the threads so i just selectively post where i know people wont eat me alive =)

It may just be too early in the cycle for many people. And, honestly, I kind of feel like I'm tempting fate every time I post in this thread, so I can see how people would have reservations about joining the club.

Go to the conference!! Especially if it is either a really big conference, or a really small conference. If it is big, you will see so much that is going on, and it will help your perspective a lot. If it is a small, close-knit conference, you'll get to know all the famous, important people in your field. I went to a big (>35,000 ppl) conference last year, and it changed my life.

In any case, any decent internship position should be understanding of that sort of situation.

--and congrats on narrowing down your thesis topic. How exciting!

Word on the conference. IMO, I hate the big ones. It is fun to see everyone's work, but they just are not as much tangible fun. The smaller ones, with a few hundred people are my favorite. The interaction you get with scientists is absolutely moving. Not just during the "science" part of the meeting, but hanging out, drinking, eating dinner, etc. A PI I met at a conference a couple of years ago is writing one of my letters, since I need two PI letters for mudphud, but have only worked in one lab.

Not to mention, the big scientists feel indebted to cover their poor students' tab at the end of the night. 👍 My boss yelled at me when I tried to take my wallet out to pay for a beer last time.

I have to write my thesis this summer. In the middle of applying, finishing the MCAT, continuing research. :barf:

Disagree... Took a morning Verbal practice section. Popped a 5 on it. This is after averaging 11s and 12s the last few weeks. :scared:

that happened to me more than a few times. don't sweat it. (although i have to say i wasn't thrilled with my VR score on the actual test. but whatever.)

👍. So true.

I like both sizes. Big conferences just give me that sense of awe in all that is going on. So much research, everywhere. My experience might be skewed because my advisor who went with me knew a lot of people there, so there was this close-knit section in our area, but then this huge room with all of the unknown.... or something.

In a one word synopsis, no.

I never really get serious and keep track of my score accurately. I can hit well some days and poorly other days. I consider myself good when I get a par, and I probably have like 5 birdies in my life. I had one eagle put on a par 5 from like 80 ft.

I bet there's a lot of good courses for you to golf at in Cali though huh?

Yeah, that's true. But I suck though. You actually have 5 birdies. I think I have a couple. And the second one was pure luck, no joke. :laugh:
 
Mk, I've decided to go to the conference. My project partner is going to, so I won't be alone either. I'm excited about it. 😀

And it's Friday, so that's happy, too.

Also, auditions for colorguard (flag twirling girls with the marching band) is tomorrow... and I'm still not positive that I want to do this next year. I've had a pretty annoying week and it makes me want to be lazy and not do anything. But I think I'll be more willing to after some time off from school, but I'm not sure. And then there's the whole applying and interviewing and missing practice thing... sigh.

just audition. you're not locked into anything if you try out, but if you don't go then you're pretty much locked into not being on colorguard 🙂

Sigh, yeah. But I don't want to take a spot from someone who will definitely do it. Every year someone quits though. It's just super annoying to deal with. I just think I'll miss it come football season. If I didn't do it, it'd be the first time in 7 years that I've gone to my school's football game as a fan and not part of the band. Weird.

I golf all the time... our campus golf course is only like $150 for a membership so I go almost everyday... just got back even 😀

I'm not good, but I have like a 18 handicap so I don't make a fool out of myself

that's uber intense! don't do it just to keep your streak alive, though. it's more likely that you'll look back on senior year and wish you had had more free time than that you'll look back and regret not doing colorguard. take it from someone who quit a bunch of ECs senior year and never looked back🙂

Also, I just finished having breakfast for lunch. Ate a half a cantaloupe all by myself and it was awesome.

Sigh... just got back from colorguard auditions. We had 39 people try out and 28 made it. Most ever. And 2/3 of the line is new this year. Should be interesting. Let's just hope I can work out this interview thing with practice.

i was just perusing the wonderful msar 2010-2011 spreadsheet that DataWhore made and i'm feeling SUPER discouraged. i've been a little disappointed in my mcat score ever since the day i got it back, but i figured it would be way too big a risk to take it again. now i feel like i'm below average at 90% of the schools on my list but i don't know what to do about it (since it's too late to retake), other than tack on a few more schools that i don't really want to go to. argh.
