Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
im counting down for may 2nd. im so ready to take the mcat and get it over with. 😀

He wanted my PS and resume to write my LOR. The resume is no problem but i havnt come close to finishing my PS. I emailed him and asked if he could write it w/o my PS or if i could give him something else or write just a shorter essay or anything. And he hasnt emailed me back in a few days. Hes the type of guy who always emails people back in literally like 5 mins (in the past 1.5 years ive been doing research with him, he has always emailed me back in less then 12 hours unless it was something stupid), everytime he doesnt answer for a few days or more, it usually means hes upset/think what someone said was stupid! Maybe im overthinking it, im going to see him this friday but hopefully hes not mad i dont know!! Its hard to tell who he likes. Hes the type of guy who seems so nice and approchable to people. Then when that person walks away hell say how much he hates them/ they irritate him. Know what I mean? I could never tell if he liked me or not...hope hes not thinking like what a ******* question that was to ask! lol

my former PI just emailed me and said he mailed in my LOR to my school's pre-med committee. yay!!! I was pretty impressed, since I only faxed (yes, faxed) him the cover sheet last week. I feel a little better now.

in other news - a draft of my personal statements is due on monday to that same pre-med committee, so they can read them before my interview with them. aaaaaah!!!

i'm having soo much difficulty just figuring out what to write about that wouldn't be soo typical or just, boring, unimportant, not in the rest of my app

Ouch! That last bit sounds bad. I hope none of that comes across in his letter.

I wouldn't worry about him not getting back to you right away. It's possibly he just wants to talk to you about it in person.

This is also a big NIH grant submission crunch time. So, it's quite possible he has been in the middle of completing his grant and doesn't have time to think about your letter just yet.

I would suggest that when you talk to him you say something to the effect of, "would you still be able to write me STRONG/GOOD letter without the PS?"

This would kill 2 birds with 1 stone. You'll know if your letter is going to be a good one and you'll know if he's bothered by the fact that he doesn't have your PS.

Don't sweat it though, man. He's probably got bigger fish to fry ATM.

Dude, I feel ya.

I had one written and thought it was pretty good, but my friends told me it sucked... Back to the drawing board. 🙁

I just finally got an idea...I guess living in a small African country for 13 years helps to add in some stories

Does anybody know why research looks good to interviewers?
There might be a million threads on this already...but i was too lazy to look it up atm
I was just wondering coz I read somewhere on SDN where someone was asked "you've done lots of research, why arent u doing MD/PhD" etc
I mean is it just for the whole experience??

I am doing some research and I like it but I know i would NOT want to do a phd...
so why does it look good or why do they like to see it?

I'm by no means an expert, my research is pretty negligible.

But IMO they want to see research so that you can continue to do it and provide them with cheap lab labor (their summer research programs between M1&M2 are generally pretty underpaid). And if they get you take a year off or something then it can increases their research $, which is a component of that silly rank list...

I'm sure there's more too it somewhere, but I wouldn't be suprised if that's a big part of it.

Well, clinical research is a very important part of medicine (new meds, better treatments, etc.) so applicants who have done research or have an interest in research can certainly contribute to the greater body of knowledge. It's not just about getting a PhD or whatever.

I was just thinking about my answer to this very question a few minutes ago. All of my buddies that have interviewed with research experience have gotten this question, so I'm feeling pretty confident I'll get it too.

My guess is that an understanding of research is important because it allows you to think more critically about other research you read and be able to contribute to research the school might be doing, like DrYoda said.

well i have my entire personal statement written up in my head

ooo ooo ooo

i have alot of empty spaces in my schedule in the next year

Yah, you would be surprised how much you can learn in 1 year. Plus, you can always supplement it by taking medical spanish during med school.

should i bathe before interviews?

funkydrmonkey send me pics of your sister and her friend.

If you're interested in it. I find that once you have the basic grammar down for a language it's pretty easy to improve it on your own when you stop taking classes. Probably more true for something like spanish where it's pretty commonly spoken.

Didn't you see my thread on why you should?

:wtf:

Are you asking to be banned?

Oh and I was wondering whether we have ever passed by each other without knowing...

I use dude and it's fonetical derivatives in a non-gender specific manner.

I do it when I speak in real life also. I'm pretty sure there's a couple people that it irritates.:meanie:

Ha ha. I do this too, but I use "Man" a lot. I do it to help keep some distance from the ladies that I'm not interested in and it just comes out when I'm hanging out with the guys.

I'm thinking about doing this on my off year just because I want to learn it. I was planning on using the Rosetta Stone though, not formal classes. I don't think Spanish would hurt. Depending on the type of Doc you are some basics could definitely come in handy.

thanks🙂

You are welcome. The reason I say this, is because for my last year, I decided to take a random language, and was deciding between Hebrew and Turkish. I did not want to learn a new script, so I decided to take Turkish. I have learned a considerable amount, which is nice. I still do not know a lot, but it is nice to actually have proof that you have learned something, rather than just a grade that says you were better than X amount of people.

I called my gf dude today, and I do it regularly. I do it to keep the relationship less of a smoochy smoochy lovey dovey type thing.

Lol. I usually don't do it intentionally.

Except to my buddy's fiance; I can tell it really annoys her, but she's too nice to tell me to shut up.

Yah im probably just overreacting. Im not too worried hell write abad letter as hes said to our entire group a few times that he will never write anyone a bad letter, just that he will refuse to write letters for those he cant write a good one for instead. Hes a trauma surgeon and like head of the department blah blah basically he has a lot on his plate and is always busy and stressed so sometimes its hard to tell what he thiking. I just remmeber a few times where I was talking to him, some random dr comes up to him and starts talking to him, then when he leaves he turns to me and hes bascially like "**** that guy i cant stand him" in my head im like whoa the way they were talking it sounded like they were close lol. Hes like master of 2 face lol. I guess on friday ill just explain my situation hopefully he understands. I ve just never been able to get a read on him. the people i thought he liked he hates and the people he seems to not like he loves...maybe tahts a good thing for me 👍

[FONT=Times New Roman, Times, serif]Every religious cult has two sets of differing and distinctive creeds: the exoteric and the esoteric. The exoteric creed is the official, public doctrine, the creed which attracts the acolyte in the first place and brings him into the movement as a rank-and-file member. The quite different creed is the unknown, hidden agenda, a creed which is only known to its full extent by the top leadership, the "high priests" of the cult. The latter are the keepers of the Mysteries of the cult..

"Hey, she want that lovey dovey (lovey dovey) that kiss, kiss (kiss, kiss) In her mind she fantasize 'bout gettin' with me."

Sorry that song popped into my head.

I got slapped by my ex for calling her dude... It wasn't a full on slap, but she was pissed. Might have been when aunt flo was in town though, so I didn't think too much of it.

My buddies wife is the same way. She says that's why I'm still single, then I remind her that it's just because I've already been through all her friends. :meanie:

Sounds like he hates your guts, so you're set! 😉

Nah, I wouldn't sweat it. He just sounds busy. He'll probably write you a great letter. He would be a douche if wrote something bad. He probably just wants to critique your PS as well. You should let him know you'll send it to him as soon as you get it closer to a final revised draft.

Didn't you say you were in the LSU band? It was an American Pie reference... Might have been before your time.

Yes, I am... and I've never seen it...

well, ksmi, I knew it was your PAWS name from the start, but I guess I don't count since it's pretty easy for me to recognize the structure of PAWS usernames

So you go to LSU, as well? That's interesting. I wonder if I know you...

And I call everyone "dude" all the time. I think it catches people off guard a lot.

My husband and I call each other dude all the time. Usually when one does something helpful, the other says "thanks dude."
