i am in need of a really good book. i'm open to all suggestions-- not uber picky about genre. what's the best book you've read lately? none of this pretentious crap where you list impressive books you may or may not have read for a class; i want something i can read on the subway and not need a discussion group to help me appreciate it 🙂

"shantaram"
its bout this australian guy who escapes from prison and makes a new life in india
its LONGG... but its pretty cool.. its like a fictional autobiography
but its nt boring at all
lotsa funny, interesting parts

Have you read Harry Potter? If not, you should. If so, then the best book I've read recently is um The Count of Monte Cristo... but that's reallllly long.
Really long but really good. Quite possibly the best revenge ever.

Any book by David Sedaris. He is one of the most humorous authors/essayists ever. He came to speak at UCLA the day before my mol bio midterm and two days before my thesis was due... evil man for the timing, but an awesome writer none the less.

hey ksmi, which hospital are you volunteering at? I volunteer in the BR General ER, it's really cool - the residents are mostly pretty helpful.

Mid-City. Are you at Bluebonnet? I didn't see your name on the schedule for Mid-City, but I could have missed it. I used to volunteer at OLOL, but there were like 3 of us at a time, but I heard that the General doesn't have as many people volunteering at once. Seems like I'll be more helpful there.

Harry potter might quite possibly be the worst book ever written👍

Yeah, I'm at Mid-City and have there for the past year and a half. lately they've had problems with my name not showing up on the schedule though. I used to do Sundays 2-6pm. But now since I"m in NOLA for the summer, I might do 2 days max this summer. I love it, and most of the time I'm the only person there, which is how it's supposed to be (unless some other person steals my shift b/c they didn't come in when they were supposed to 😡). I've seen so much there and that's actually mainly what my PS is based on.

Ksmi doesn't read books, she stares them down until she gets the information.

I must commend everyone on their entertaining posts today. There wasn't much waiting for me after work yesterday, but today was great! 0C, keep instigating man!

Ha ha. I'm doing my best...

Did you just wish him luck fornicating?

Don't instigate the mod. She has more power than you.

A) There is nothing wrong with fornicating... But my plans did backfire tonight...

I set 2 dates, one for 6 and the other for 8, which I in turn moved back to 8:30 then failed to make it... the first one was going pretty good... Now the 2nd is pissed... Hmmm... I'm working at it though. If I play my cards right I'll be at the bar in 30 mins with her. I think she's just about to drive back...:meanie:

kissme! You like math maybe you can help me. When youre looking at statistical analysis and junk when it says like r=.68, the closer it is to one the more correlated 2 things are right? And if its like r=-.23 the closer it is to -1 the more inversely related they are? Like if r=-.23 then as x decreases y increases? God i hate math 😡. Why did my PI have to give me such a confusing paper to read when i dont understand anything about stats-_-.

Yes. For a regression line you want your correlation coefficient (your decimal number r) to be as close to 1 or -1 as it can be. If you square that number you will get your coefficient of determination, this is the number that you can use to give you the variation of whatever your Y variable is by the regression line. This number will always be positive and if you want to be able to predict data should ideally be as close to 1 as possible. Also, most articles fail to mention this, but you can not apply the line to any variable beyond the range of the data in the sample.

Life of Pi was a great read. I'm reading Angels and Demons now (can't put it down). Just finished Hyperion, a sci-fi book, but an awesome read (it won a hugo). If you want something well written but more directed towards medicine then anything Oliver Sacks is worthwhile. A great Sacks Book is The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat.

I hate to admit it, but I would also side with Miss KissMe, the Harry Potter series was great.

If you are into LOR (Lord of the Rings not Letter of Recommendation), then try The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. Pure awesomeness.

If you are into sci fi, Dune series by Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson kick ass.

I would go with Hyperion before Jordon. Also, I'm reading Sword of Thrones now and it's pretty good. The series gets a lot of praise for being less formulaic than Jordon's stuff.

Dune and LoR are solid choices from what I hear, but I've never read either. Keep meaning to though, but another book always wins out.

Every school in U.S. of A gets out earlier than mine. FML.

Yep! 😆

Damn... NM... She's pissed. No workaround on that one tonight... 🙁

Oh well, there's always tomorrow night. 😀

Ha ha. I'm just playin', man. That sucks. I know the feeling. I guess at USD they don't get out until next week either, if that makes you feel better. So, I'm still laughing at my little sister.

Coolio. I'm excited about volunteering again. I wasn't able to do any this year because of student orgs, and I miss it. Any advice for Mid-City? Ways that things work that I should know?

Don't worry, my last final is 8AM on June 11th, and I graduate on the 12th... so I am there with you. Quarter following UC's FTW. High five! ::highfive:

bro, you're pissing off a couple of ladies today, huh?

ha ha. No joke. But not the one I went out with earlier, so while I'm batting 33% today, that's still a decent day. Plus, the other is still texting me. I got her to laugh, that's a good sign in the forgiveness dept. 😀

Wonder why...

Pfft. I didn't tell her I was on another date... but yeah, I felt bad with her at the bar all alone, but she told me she was going to hijack me and take me to another bar... And I really wasn't feeling that whole thing either... I mean this one is right by my apt. so why leave, right?

haha yay someone else :highfive:. Someone give me ideas on how to finish my presentation 🙂

Okay, 10PM and time for bed. Good night all!

Uh oh! I feel a comeback coming on! She might be on her way back! Wow, if I pull this one off I'll impress even myself. ha ha 😎

1/3 isnt bad. Think of it like baseball, batting a .333 means youre going to the hall of fame👍

you're also pissing off Kiss Me today, too, it seems.:corny:

Well I wouldn't expect anyone to be stupid enough to tell a girl you are on another date, but still you blew her off. So it was supposed to be at 8, when did you tell her that you couldn't make it?

Well, if you're going in Saturday night, you'll see cool stuff, but be VERY careful of the parking lot on the way out - it gets very sketch. You have to be proactive in the ER and introduce yourself to the residents moreso than the attendings. The attendings don't give a crap about volunteers generally and the residents you can follow around wherever. The residents at BRGH only rotate there for a month, so if you only go once a week, chances are you won't see the same resident again, so it's like every week you start over with a new resident who doesn't know you and may or may not talk with you about stuff. You see really cool stuff on Sat nights, and one Sunday I saw an X-ray of a guy who had a "device" in his colon and needed surgery - weird but cool.

yes, all the cool guys like us think alike.👍

Amen! Think how depressing this thread would be if it were all women? It would all be about shopping and altruism. :meanie:

Oh, by the way!

Top pimp of da yea'!

Haha, only a smidge?? I think 11 years is a bit more than a smidge.

Ha ha. Apparently not for this girl I'm meeting up with next week (but she's 21 now), nor the 19 year old from yesterday, but I won't count that one, because she is a little too young and I had to respectfully decline the offer to go out. I didn't have the heart. It would have been like taking candy from a baby. 😉
