Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've done 9 of 20ish prompts.

I just finished my 15th out of 26. I made folders for each school on my hard drive and put a file labeled prompt09.doc in each folder. If the secondaries don't change, I'll change that file name to prompt10.doc. If they do change, I'll keep the file and start a new one for each school that changes. It'll be frustrating for all the schools I have to do it for, but the schools that don't change will be soooooo easy.

i already have folders for my schools, and i think i'm going to go do this now

Already working on secondaries? Makes me want to :barf:
I finished a decent draft of my PS this week and should just have a few minor revisions. Next week I'll finish my extracurriculars and hopefully submit. Secondaries will have to wait until I actually get them from the schools 😉

Y'all saw my color-coded spreadsheet, right? I can't wait to start changing the colors. 😀

me too!! mine is super pretty.

I've got mine all set up. I've been giving copies to my pre-med friends around here too. Thank whoever made that (I think i remember you saying that someone else posted it). I added a couple columns to mine:

Miles to school
Website with application update info

My total mileage, if I drive to every single school for an interview is >32,000 mi! 😱

oi. way too much. that's 10 oil changes!!!

Depending on the school, it'll be hard to find the MD/PhD-specific essays on the school specific discussions. I have my 7 from last year if you want them.

yes, please!!!!

The same can be said for these guys. And look where they are today:

Ok, so I was about to make some off color joke right after I started watching it, but then I got hooked and watched the whole thing. Those guys are amazing. I would love to see them live.

It kind of seems silly to work on secondaries even before you submit your primary. I say plenty of time for everything, and so take it as it comes.
I don't honestly think I can seriously get down to writing secondary essays until I actually receive them from schools.
But to each his own.

Maybe in 1960. Now with the synthetic oil they use in cars you only really need to change your oil about every 5k miles, so it's more like 6, but it's still ridiculous.

I just got done with a 17.5 hour drive and never want to sit in that car again...

i just had a miniature freak-out. for LORs...I have 3 from PI's, two of whom were also my classroom professors. Do I need to get another letter from a separate professor? why didn't I do this earlier?

Well im not sure of the LOR reqs for MSTP programs but...normally you would need a non-science letter, some schools require this. But like I said thats only for normal md. I think jefferson is the only school that requires more then 3 letters of rec.

Good morning kiddies! Ive been up since 630 with only 4 hours of sleep and a half cup of coffee!! Whooooo 🙂

i have a non-sci prof. too. And a committee letter. So should I be good without a non-PI, sci prof?

A committee letter overrides the letter of rec requirements. For MD/PhD just make sure you have a letter from every PI you worked with and you are set to go

Yesterday I was going through the MSAR and I saw that pretty much all schools require 2 semester of inorganic chemistry, I was completely puzzled and a little worried by that.

Finally I realized they just mean general chemistry.

Hello my fellow neurotic pre-meds!

I finished my secondary essay, too. But then, I am applying to only one school (not by choice) 😛

Can't wait till June 2 arrives!

Good morning, hopefuls!

Putting the finishing touches on your primaries?🙂

Yep 🙂. Its basically done I just feel obligated to double check. All the sudden I hate my PS even more and want to change it! lol. If only this disadvantaged status thing wasnt so confusing Id be done already! 🙁.

And I cant belive some of you guys are almost all done with prompts....you are crazy it took me like 3 hours last night to do the case western 2ndary...granted its one of the longer ones but still -_-...I thought I was neurotic. Guess i must bow to the champions bryson and ksmi!:meanie:

All the ones I have done are pretty short. I'm saving the harder ones for later. 🙂

How'd you like that autobiography?🙂

Anyone have a poster presentation as an activity? What are you doing with the description? I just don't know how best to write it. 🙁

I lumped all my poster presentations together and kind of cited it like a publication.

I put down author's names in the same order as they appeared on the poster (for 2 of my posters I was not the presenter/first name), the title of the poster, the name of the event, the location of the event, and the date. I also listed the awards for the poster if any, after putting a 1 line space after the information.

Example for Mr. Plslet Mein in Dr. Lab's lab:

Plslet Mein, Peon Alpha, Peon Beta, and Head-Honcho of Lab. The bestest research ever that will knock you out of your socks. Snooty Society's 50th Bestest Research Conference. San Diego, CA. May 30, 2009.

Awarded 2nd place overall amongst biology lab research presentations.

(i didn't go into details- they could get this from my "research" entry by matching the PI or poster title back to the appropriate lab, also the titles were lengthy and pretty self-explanatory)

Cool. I like that format, even though I'm second author on my poster (we decided that alphabetical order was the most fair since we all did equal work). Sigh, yeah, my research stuff isn't so easy to explain. The title of my poster is confusing and even my research description probably doesn't make sense to someone not in math, but I've simplified it as much as I can.

🙂 Simple: Do something like this

Peon A*, Plslet Mein*, Peon B*, Head-Honcho of Lab, blah blah blah

*Contributed equally to work

Also, for CVs/resumes, if someone is in a similar situation for a publication, they are allowed to rearrange the author orders as long as there were multiple first authors and they contributed equally to the work.

I see. Maybe elaborate some more for your poster presentation then if you need the extra space to clarify

or go the complete opposite route and overwhelm them with shear math to try to stupify them 😀

😱 The 10,000th post is on the horizon

an epic speech for an epic occasion

haha i act like i'm 5 at times and i really really dont want to study. i bet my scores would be much better if all this time spent on sdn was instead spent on studying

Cool. That makes sense. I'm always wondered how people do that.

I did my best to explain. Luckily I research applied math, so it's not all way out in left field, only a little.

So my mom just got home, and was like, "ksmi, if you don't help me unload the groceries, you don't get the present I just got you." So being the good child I am, I go help, expecting like a candy bar or something silly like that as my present. No, my mom got me a GPS. For no reason. Well, she said that I needed one because they are useful. But really? I mean I'm happy about it and all, but it was really really random.

🤣 yeah thats really random. i hope you plan on driving in med school. or if not you can just be that weird pedestrian on the street manuevering around with a machine blarring out stuff like "left turn in 5 min". i'm sure it'll startle some folks beside you

maybe she can secretly track your every movement with it as well 😏

And this is an example of what it will look like later on in the cycle. Although I'm hoping it doesn't turn out like that. 🙂

i think there will be A LOT more light blue than that

欠伸ミュウスメです。

Actually I love those topics....saying how you will add diveristy or what difficult situations youve had to overcome are sooooo simple for me. I have the #1 easiest response to all that. My son was born when i was 19 boom and just explain all that put the right positive spin on it, say how ive matured/what ive learned, and im done 🙂.

What I hate are the "why do you want to go to X med school" or the "what type of physician do you plan to be/where do you see yourself in 10 years" -_- those are fail. I dont understand why schools ask why do you want to go here. I want to go to your school because it will make me an MD....serious what other reasons would i say. I guess schools like to read a bunch of BS? lol. I mean there are like 8 schools max where i can truly say from the bottom of my heart that I want to go there...and even then 5 of those schools are just based on location or tuition...which of course are not acceptable answers.

Oh and thanks for the excel sheet kissme! 🙂. I got it off sdn awhile ago but i couldnt remember from who. I was almost gonna take credit for making it 😉.

Hi everyone! Why aren't you going to submit secondaries to Hopkins, UNC, UVa, and Wake, ksmi?

I'm jk. I just looks funny on your mock spreadsheet. It's even more colorful that I imagined!
