I mean, of course, your clothing is not the most important thing, but still it's pretty important, I heard. I have a copy of "The Medical School Interview" by Jeremiah Fleenor and he says to dress conservatively. The medical field is still a very conservative field. It's the first impression the interviewer gets of you, and first impressions leave a mark.

BTW, that book is a good read, I recommend it to anyone in this thread.
 
i also think black is weak . . . but unfortunately i already have a nice black suit and cannot justify buying another one. although, i was at the mall today and everything was insanely on sale, i got 2 pairs of jeans and some dress pants all for $10 each . . . what was i talking about?? oh yeah, suits. mine is black but i will try to jazz it up with a cool color underneath and some cute accessories. since i tried to emphasize my artsy side in my app, i figure i can get away with more. maybe i'll dread my hair 😛

oh and re: the exclusivity of this thread. its not exclusive, its just that so many people post about so many random things it's hard to keep up if you aren't on here on a regular basis . . . so, many people give up! or at least take hiatuses, like i did the month before mcatty.

and i swear im not lame for being on here on a saturday night . . . i'm at my parents' for the weekend and there's nothin to do here and no one i know 🙁 i tried to get my mom to drink with me but she's a lightweight and i'm an insomniac apparently.

edited to add: in case any of you were wondering, and i know you were, i'm also keeping myself entertained with wine, the office, and best-of-craigslist. this is my favorite one so far:

hello this is hamdy bey. i have gone to coney island to dispose of ashes of dead old wizard but when i returned home his robe was again filled with a different laughing wizard.

new wizard does several things.

1) unplugs cell phone during charge and runs video recorder feature idly for hours
2) places my house keys under a pile of conedison bills
3) shouts at mailman
4) stacks cats
5) obscures my shadow with giant novelty lollipop when i emerge to greet my brothers
6) replaced all scrabble letters with F
7) tenses my sensibilities during islam forum
8) writes untoward letters to president of turkish republic of northern cyprus in my name
9) deposits juice box wrappers on my hall so the rustling angers cats and their stack topples
10) howls at moon when it is not in the fullest of states

i would much rather have previous wizard return !!! please help either to capture current wizard or ressurect former. current wizard is subletting disgusting basement apartment. ALL OF ABOVE NOTES SPECIFICALLY FORBIDDEN BY LEASE AGREEMENT.

Oh, and I didn't really think about most interviews happening in fall/winter time, where something this bright would stand out even more. Sigh. Back to the drawing board, I guess. I still have plenty of time to find something awesome and more conservative. Part of me wants to hang on to this suit anyway. But I just like suits. 🙂 My med school suit will be my 3rd suit, but the other 2 I know are not appropriate. Neither has full length sleeves.

I went out with friends. Thus the suit buying. I'm just home early thanks to the mono and extreme tiredness.

On an semi-unrelated note, I was really sick last night after colorguard stuff all day, so my mom gave my some Ambien to help me sleep. Yeah, it made me hallucinate. That was zero fun.

There were spiders, my computer screen seemed like 3D, and there were a bunch of people. Made it hella hard to type too. But it was really weird. It was like a dream, especially looking back it seemed like a dream, but I was awake. Weirdest thing was that I knew I was hallucinating, but really couldn't do anything about it.

And now I sound crazy. Woo. :laugh:

cripes . . . you have mono? it's funny, i was going to make a joke about someone with mono needing a sleep aid . . . then i remembered how bad it was when i had it and that i had to take drugs to sleep too. not ambien though. that stuff seems scary. i hate rx drugs, when i got vicodin after getting my wisdom teeth out it made me feel like crap. i can't believe people use it as a recreational drug. all i wanted to do when i took it was puke my guts up.

lol, ksmi i also just remembered you aren't 21 which explain why you arent out at a bar like me and elmo should be. 😉 so you are pardoned from lameness.

i also just noticed that ksmi broke 6000, and blue elmo is approaching it . . i have about 1.5% of the amount of posts y'all have combined. hahahaha.
 
but i was here for both of them (her 5000th and 6000th.) creepy, huh? because as you can see from my post count i'm only on sporadically. perhaps i can sense when it's coming . . . now next time i get the urge to pop into the 2014 thread you'll be at 7000

In other news, I've decided to find a light grey suit, or try to. And wear a brightly colored shirt underneath it. It that doesn't work, I'm going for a less conventional suit color, like a deep (non blue/black/grey) color. I refuse to be held down by all these "be conservative" rules. As long as I look nice, act professional, and answer the questions, they shouldn't care!

well... you've played the game this long... why stop at the very last step?

i'm going with a dark blue with subtle pinstripes, so kinda conservative but i guess the pinstripes aren't so much
 
btw, i love how we're thinking about interviews already even before finishing secondaries. do you guys find yourselves thinking about how you'd answer interview questions about random things? i do.

Screw that. I've tried my hardest not to play the game. The only things I did specifically for med school were volunteering at a hospital, shadowing, and I guess taking the MCAT. But an app is kinda incomplete without those. I hate playing the game.

i like pinstripes . . . maybe i'll start saving my $ and if i get an interview, **** it, i'll buy a suit!! and ksmi i dont think you should return the blue one . . . just save it for ONE interview since you'll probably have like 10. wear it to the one you care least about just to see how it goes.

No offense, but it's things like playing the game that make me dislike pre-meds. Everyone thinks they need to do a bio major and be in the pre-med club, and do a whole bunch of insignificant stuff to put down on a application. I worked hard to get where I am, and I enjoyed my time as far from away from the stereotypical pre-med life as possible. I don't want to give into the flawed system of belief that if I don't do everything exactly like the majority of med school applicants, then I won't get in. Because that's simply not true.

i agree with you that it's wonderful to be away from the pre med stereotype, (i'm an engineer and i have a job fixing computers), but it does seem like these days, playing the game means being different from the pre med stereotype, to find some way to be "special". that's really the best way to get into med school, right? to do something weird and tie it back to medicine.

i think there's a (small) difference between 'playing the game' and 'jumping through hoops.' obviously we all have to jump through the hoops- volunteering, shadowing, mcats. we don't all have to play the game- premed clubs, butt-kissing, oneupping our classmates.

i try to do my own thing and be unique but i absolutely jump through the hoops 🙂 premed club? no effing way

no but i do usually go wait in line to see them at midnight. and i bought the last 3 of the books at midnight release parties 🙂
 
I really enjoyed Half-Blood Prince the book. It was the best along with the Goblet of Fire one.

book 7 was definitely a completely different experience. i think there's a lot to be said for it if you take the time to think about the specifics
