Hey everyone - I'm mostly a lurker but two of my kids are out of town w/their dad so my house is quieter than usual lol.

Had a question about Kaplan - has anyone taught for them? I'm in the middle of a divorce and could use a little extra money but am still in school full-time, so the schedule seemed flexible and the pay decent. Any first hand experience?

I'm so jealous of all the interview invites (though, of course, happy for you all!)! I applied EDP to my state school, so I'm just waiting to see if I go 1 for 1 on the interview thing. Hope to hear soon...

I doubt it. I've worked with him before and we are currently affiliated with the same lab. So, I'm thinking he might find it humorous to stump me.

It's a lot of low income "training" then you get to teach the classes for 3 hours at $20 an hour. Sometimes you'll only have one class a week, but other times you'll have 2 or 3 a week. Usually 1 to 2 though. Then there is a lot of review time at $7 an hour. Some people like it and others hate it. This is personal preference though.

glad you chimed up finally, lurker-mom 🙂 coulda used some comforting words of wisdom from one parent to another (potential) 😛

anyway, i taught for a bit for kaplan. if youve had teaching experience, its a walk in the park. i just couldnt juggle that, research and a d1 sport :/
what you do is apply online to a center near you, list you MCAT (forget if they ask for GPA), then if they like what they see, they invite you in for a mini presentation.

its a 5 min How To speech on how to do anything your little heart desires. you good at baking a cake? teach the group how to bake a cake. good at making a worm composter (i swear someone did this during my interview)? then give a how to on that. just make sure youre confident, articulate, and engaging. try to be as interactive as possible and have a logical flow to it all. they like presentations with 3 parts to it.

and then if they like that, theyll give you an offer! that simple. as for pay, i believe it was about 10 bucks an hour when i was there. its pretty decent as a side job, wouldnt quit my day job for it though because they have lots of teachers and they may not have a class for you immediately.

I'm already feeling the love! 😍 I forgot to mention in my earlier post - I already did the online Kaplan application and they just called to make an appt for the audition. Got to figure out what to talk about. I taught adjunct for awhile and did training in my former life (I worked in IT for 8 years before staying home with the kiddos for a bit), so hopefully it will go well. I might have another job lined up through one of my professor's grants to TA a class. Hopefully that and Kaplan will be enough to close the gaps on my bills. I'm taking 2 upper-level Physics and 2 upper-level Chem classes this fall (and I have 6 kids), so I'm not sure I'll have time for much more.

I'll try to jump in more often - you all are a fun group!
 
hmm i dont think lurkerMom is going to get a chance to read our responses to her inquiry...shes too slow. maybe she doesnt realize the awesome power of 2014 thread...how fast and swiftly it develops! and carries away any semblance of a decent conversation in the vortex of the pages... 🙄

I teach for TPR but our interview process was the same. Make sure you ask people questions and make it fun. I taught everyone how to do a dance that the LSU colorguard does when the football team forces a punt. See the guys do it was awesome!

It's a lot easier now that I'm separated lol. My mom lives with us, so that's a huge help, and the 4 oldest are in school when I am. I just don't sleep much.

Speaking of sleep - really going to take that nap now...

so i have a funny story that you talking about nicknames reminded me of:

-a couple days ago at work this VERY large man that always comes in and gets food to go from the restaurant i work at was sitting waiting for his food. There was another to go order at the same time for people with the last name of Hefty. So, the host who is not the brightest gets the food ready for the Hefty family and brings it to the overweight man and says, "Oh! This must be for you Hefty. It's great that you can joke about your weight like that!" When that wasn't his order the host felt quite bad to say the least:laugh:

The poor guy just was like "uhh that's not mine, my name is ___". He kind of just rerouted the conversation away from his weight and took his food and left haha.

It was almost as bad as the other day where my manager said to a man and his butch-looking wife "right this way, gentlemen!" Needless to say they got their dinner for free😀

Me either-SUNY Downstate and Einstein are both schools I'd really love to go to too, hopefully we'll be in the next batch of interview invites

I'm not dying to be called it. It's a horrid nickname. Nicknames just make people feel more accepted. Thus my happiness and sadness about it. I want a cooler nickname. Think of something.
