Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
ok -- random question that's been bugging me all morning...

ran 21 miles on Saturday--according to my 4 calorie counters, that equals about 3000 calories burned. Ate a 20 piece McNugget about an hour afterwards (845 calories, 50g carbs 50g protein). Dinner that night I had a normal portion (not one of those huge restaurant portions) of of goat cheese ravioli and some veggies. Sunday, I ate normally (maintained my 1400 calorie diet).

question is: how did I gain 5lbs??! 😡

21 miles is impressive, as is the 20 pieces

when did you take your weight?

Count me in.🙁

But at least yours has had something good in there in the past... 🙄

you never know, dude...

True. I'm going to just pretend I didn't apply. That will make me feel better. 😉

That's a solid run! Are you training for a marathon? And to think I was sweating my 13 mile run coming up in a couple weeks...

I'm wondering if it's all water weight. Your body is probably trying to retain as much water as possible after your run and I think all the sodium in both of your meals is helping your body do that. Just a guess.

Water weight? Do you normally run so much or is this relatively new? Because if it's new your muscles could be trying to retain water....? I'm not an expert though, so don't quote me..... 🙄

umm?? new muscle mass or water weight are my only guesses

yeah -- I'm hoping its water weight 🙄. I weight lifted pretty heavily from age 17-22 (thrower on my school's track team), and I never gained muscle that quickly, so I'd be really surprised if it was muscle -- maybe a little of column A and a little of column B 🙂. Just wasn't what I wanted to see at 6am on a monday morning 🙄

I'd go with the 20pc FRIED chicken nugget as the culprit... all those trans fats in their cooking oil

ummm...McDonalds' McNuggets are trans-fat-free. And like I said, I'd burned 3k calories (even if that's an overstatement, I'd at least burned 1k), so calories in << calories out. It's got a good deal of protein, a little high in fat -- though low in saturated and no trans fats -- and a low-to-moderate amount of carbs.

I don't get why people are always so down on McDonalds. You'll find the same faux foods in a Starbucks, Cosi, or Chipotle. Unless you eat at home for every meal (or pay out the nose for organic) you're going to eat things that aren't real food.

Sigh... Another day with an empty inbox...

I hear that. Feels like it's been that way for weeks 🙁

Brooklyn -- it was morning to morning -- usually around 6am. I'm looking at sodium counts for both the ravioli and mcnuggets, and am actually surprised by how high they are...usually just pay attention to the fat/carbs/protein/cholesterol...makes the water weight seem a lot more likely.

SubP -- I'm training for the Marine Corps Marathon on Oct. 25th -- as a shot putter, I've avoided running like the plague since I was 15, so I figured it'd be a nice change of pace. Saturday was my last big run before the real thing. I've got an impinged nerve in my hip, and you have to keep a 14-minute-mile pace in order to finish the race, so I'm hoping I can actually finish (after training since May they're pretty much going to have to get the marines to remove me from the road 😛). I'm signing up for the Austin marathon in February just in case...

EDIT: and good luck w/ your half! These races are so much fun! Especially if you get a good crowd 🙂

You know, I think if you post a bikini or lingerie photo of yourself we would be better able to assess where that weight gain occurred. 😛

Ok, you can't compare chicken nuggets to grilled chicken at chipotle. If you don't get all the rice and other crap at chipotle it is much healthier than McDonald's. Try to get a naked burrito with the veggies and black beans. Maybe a little mild salsa (or whatever) and some lettuce. That's much much healthier than chicken nuggets.

Yeah, but you're having a nice application season thus far!

yeah -- I'll agree with that in terms of calories, etc. I absolutely love their salads, and they're a much healthier option than a big mac meal. But with any fast food, you're going to have preservatives and chemicals that aren't "real food". My point was that there's unhealthy stuff in all restaurants and that McD's gets an undeserved bad rap in comparison to other restaurants because they are the stereotypical fast food joint and people don't know how to eat in moderation...

and don't get the chips at Chipotle. Holy God 😱

DISCLAIMER: Do not play with this site if you eat Chipotle a lot.

EDIT: and for everyone's sake, I'm not posting pics. Everyone would lose 5lbs from loss of appetite 😛 😛

Yeah, the sodium levels are off the charts. It's one reason why they might not be the best food choice. But this is coming from the guy that downed a meatball parm pizza last night to carb load. lol.

That sounds awesome! Good luck at your marathon! Is the pinched nerve painful all the time when you run? At about mile 6 or 7 my knees start to feel like someone is shoving an icepick in them... Not sure how that would compare to a pinched nerve, but it makes running after that neigh impossible, so I can't even imagine doing it with a pinched nerve. Good luck! Take advil. 😉

Thanks! I'm just hoping to finish, time is irrelevant at this point. Next year, I'll run for time. This time it's just to finish. 🙂

you trying to get banned? i know that's how previous posters in this thread started down their slippery slide... 😛 😉

Probably muscle and/or water.

Also, just thought I'd share: the "Gossip, Gossip, Gossip" AIM buddy has the following headline today: "Lindsey LOHAN a STRIPPER?" 😀

Lol. I usually don't pay much attention to celebrities. But occasionally they are good for a laugh.

A guy can ask...

If memory serves, individuals in the past had other circumstances involved... 😉

But if you want to post picture of them on a slippery slide in a bikini and/or lingerie I wouldn't object. 😛

where is Shreveport?

Northwest Louisiana.

shreveport.gif

This is what I'm thinking... please cut it out.

Lol. You ladies are so sensitive... I think you're going overboard on the sensitivity/pc aspect if you ask me. It's not all or nothing... There are shades of gray. 😉

Not really. It's a bigger city compared to most places in LA, but it's by no means a "big city."

Shreveport = 👎

Everybody needs to stop talking about food until I can eat after my class! I'm getting hungry...

I can't remember when the last time I heard from a med school about something new was... I guess when UVM gave me an interview, but that was quite a while ago. 🙁

so are LSU - NO and Shreveport different schools (like UMDNJ RWJ/NJMS) or different campuses like UM Miami/Boca

It's not about being sensitive... it's about the rules of the forum.

Shades of gray... 😉

By the way, Brooklyn, apparently all the best looking ladies are in Lafayette, LA. That place is supposedly a gold mine.

I'm going to have to make my way down there one of these days.

i am sick and can't focus on anything other than the fact that i am sick.

if i am still sick for sinai on wednesday i am going to cry.

Is it just a flu? Shouldn't be too bad then, you should be fine by Wed!

On another note, man, I'm pinching myself in disbelief right now. I had 3 interviews and no acceptances last year, but I have 11 interviews now? Are the few hundred hours of volunteering THAT important? It's unbelievable, I expected like 6 interviews, max. Man, I wish I didn't self-destruct so much in undergrad, I could be in med school already! But then again, I wouldn't have had a chance to get to know the awesome entering c/o 2014 SDNers 😀

Haha. Just the flu? Have you ever had the flu man? It sucks soooooooo bad. Hopefully it's just a cold. In CO about 99% of the flu going around right now is H1N1 and about 5 of my friends have gone through it with ~1 week turnaround time.

Hope you are feeling better, dw.

Congrats on your interview success this year. Is the only difference between this year and last your volunteer hours? Did you have any volunteer hours last year?

Well goncrats, man (as dw would say). Aren't we all just such cool people here?

The only thing I could think of when I got my interviews was getting a score of 21 on my last practice MCAT before the real thing. Fail

man i ****ing hate connecting flights. come on. i dont want to stop over at your bum ass airport for 2 hours. no. especially if the stop over is in newark, which i could just drive to

Is it sad that I didn't realize that Shreveport was THAT far North?

I actually thought it was somewhere near alexandria...lol
I've been thinking you were from the SoCal LA.

Louisianna seems to be a popular state in this thread.

ha, for reals. the flu is serious business. i think this is just a nasty cold.

Chipotle uses all organic, antibiotic free products to be fair. I dont eat at any of those other places. You're right about the calories in < out thing obviously, maybe you need to figure out a different way to burn calories because your body is adjusting to all the running? Try rowing to mix it up and see if you get the same results

I had some, but I didn't know the application process AT ALL(didn't hang around SDN then :cry🙂 so I didn't put the non-clinical or non-research experiences on there. Still, I had VERY little. I think only 1 entry on AMCAS that didn't begin the time of my application. My GPA actually went down, as I took this music appreciation course just for ****s and giggles and got a C+ in it . I thought since I didn't get credits for it it wouldn't count in AMCAS, still disputing that....

hmm. well drexel med school (1st 2 years) is in wynnewood. which is a nice part but not quite center city philly.

jefferson is in the heart of philly. it has a upscale hospital on the main line/lower merion (where kobe grew up) thats like really nice. i think financially jefferson is a bit better now (both drexel and jeff have had their problems) and their ortho. surg program is like one of the top programs in the nation and they always take internally. most people like that school.
