Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Dude, I've love to be in your position. I love elective classes. Next semester I'm taking 2 art classes. If I didn't have 2 required courses to take next semester, I'd be taking so many more electives (next Spanish level, maybe a child psych class)

haha i *love* one of my elective classes, but the other two are a waste of time. like my engineering class, where we move ever-so-painfully slow...i was really expecting to love it, but man. i don't need a 30 minute recap of the previous lecture at the beginning of every new class.

I agree with Luun... don't worry about it!
Thanks! I'll try my best not to. I think I'll feel better when I see the email reply doesn't say, "status change" hahaha jk For real, thanks guys. I'll try to keep sane until then!

PSA to Fellow 2014ers:

Have you noticed? Each class has its own unique thing. Well, actually I just know that the 2013ers have this stupid little picture with their names on it. Anyhow, what will be our legacy? What will be the tradition that we build for ourselves? I know the answer.

A Class of 2014 thread...in the lounge.

Why the lounge? How many times have you wanted to say something bat**** crazy? How many times have you wanted to say "**** you spurs you ****ing ****"(looking at you, blue) but couldn't? How many times have you wanted to say "let me have you, if only for one night, you sensitive, awesome caesar"(ksmi)? And how many times have you stopped from doing so because of the board rules?

That stops now.

Never again will we have to refrain from talking about anal; never again will we have to get warned by the diabolical killjoys whose names start with the letters M, O, and D; never again will we have to suppress our dirty and evil inner selves.

We will create a kingdom where we may roam free, and uncensored insanity will be our legacy.

Who's with me?

I would not participate, but you have fun with that. I kinda want you to do it just to see what would happen.

In other news, an interview slot opened up on Tuesday for Wright St. and I nabbed it... my first interview.... so very excited 🙂

Any advice for the first one?

Woo! Smile, be personable, have fun.

True dat!

Can anyone talk me off the ledge here, I just wrote an email to pritzker with an application question and definitely spelled Pritzker wrong in that email at one point. P-R-I-T-Z-K-E-R, is definitely my top choice 🙁 Anyone help me out? Send an "ignore that previous email" email? (leaning towards NOT doing that...) or just let it ride and assume that it won't go in front of the adcom, lol Thanks guys! (be gentle) 😳

EDIT: for what it's worth, it was a typo, and not just realizing that I've been spelling it wrong... bah.

No biggie. They prob won't notice or care.

Patient comes into the front of the ER about 2 mins ago:

Patient's Mother: My son has the flu.
Nurse: Ma'am, if your son has the flu, we can't do anything. He needs rest and fluids.
Patient's Mother: But can't you give a shot?
Nurse: No ma'am, there's no shot we can give.
Patient's Mother: What about the flu shot???

:smack:

They then proceed to argue about the use of a flu shot and ends with the patient's mother claiming that the only reason her son isn't getting one is because the nurses are hoarding them because of the shortage.

to all of you non-college students out there-- do you ever have days where you just want to go to med school already? my current job is just SO not what i want to do with my life and i'm having a really hard time staying motivated and engaged now that i know what's coming next. everyone else here is here because this is their career, whereas i'm just stopping by. so there's this weird disconnect. anyway, i want to go to med school NOW.

In a perfect world, if I could bank all the time I have between now and the start of med school next August, start med school asap, and I could call a "time out" during med school and take those days off...I would go now, too.

But life doesn't work that way, so I am very happy to have this time since once med school starts, I may not get any real time off for the next 10+ years...but I am also in a different position than you and most others: I am not working a job right now, and will not get one before med school. If I was in a drudgery job, I think I would feel the same way as you...

So, is there anything else you can do to pay your bills between now and med school?

i work at a nonprofit free legal services organization. i do work with public benefits recipients. mostly medicaid, but some food stamps, welfare, social security, medicare, public housing, etc. basically i do the work of a social worker but i don't have the degree 😳

Ok, cool... that seems very rewarding... I can imagine a tough patient population in NYC. You probably have alot of patience doing that everyday... so I don't blame you for trying to flash forward to med school.

Just enjoy all your time outside of work 🙂

Cause it will be gone soon 😳

yeah, i keep telling myself that! i do like my job, and it's definitely rewarding and important work... but it's emotionally exhausting. so to keep from getting emotionally exhausted, lately i've been a bit detached, which means i can't really enjoy the work as much. meh, at least i'm free from 5-9 🙂

Yeah... there are many days at work that I'm on poop and pee alert as a pca... the detachment thing sucks! I hate myself for it. I can see how the whole doctoring process can breed desensitization.

Lol. Yeah have fun with that, but I'm not going in there. Also, it'll never work. The Lounge regulars would eat you alive.

Yeah, the lounge scares me. It's like weirdos and hobos are there.

it stinks that a good and busy day in the ER for me is a bad day for everyone else in the ER 🙁

There's so many personalities in the ER tho... I always have a good time in there... always a good story to take away from the day haha.

True story. Also get a good feel for why our costs are out of control for healthcare. I'll give you a hint, it has something to do with the definition of "emergency" 😉

spurs, as the king of all weirdos, can lead us all to the lounge!

I'm sorry work is boring Tata... what do you do?
I'm a clinical research assistant...short for...I do everything under the sun that is required to get a patient enrolled, seen, their data processed.
And we have no patients today.
thus I am here 🙂 trying to ignore my empty mailbox

Thanks.... Wright St. is also very stress free from what I've heard so hopefully it's a great start!

It's very relaxed... when I interviewed they only asked me one or two questions that weren't related to my application. Expect a half hour presentation about the school, lunch with med students, a tour, and then your interviews.

definitely! my "job" is pretty much playing housewife, it's soooo mentally unchallenging. i love my little ones (the 4 year old is currently dancing around singing to herself in a wiggles shirt lol) but i don't ever see myself being just a mom without a career.

Are you in the ER with BBender and myself too?

No, Cardiology.
I usually shadow on Fridays but my MD decided that the Deans Retreat is somehow more important... So I need to come up with a way to entertain myself/avoid doing work for the rest of the day.
Ideas?
