Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
so my patient ate this

And he's flippin out... it's crazy.

All the residents in the ER were super intrigued.

Honors/HighPass/Pass/Fail is the exact same thing as A, B... system. Just named different. That's why it's bs. Just call it what it is.

LSU actually was the only school I interviewed at that wasn't P/F. Vandy adds Honors for M2, but that doesn't really matter.

My computer is being super slow today. It worries me, because I still don't even have my music on here yet.

A lot of the schools that are just H/P/F are cool, because H is so hard to get that no one really tries to get it. At the schools I've been to, as many people can get it as earn it. This means everyone isn't going to get all competitive with each other about it. I agree though, straight P/F is the best.

I would not participate, but you have fun with that. I kinda want you to do it just to see what would happen.

Woo! Smile, be personable, have fun.

No biggie. They prob won't notice or care.

Come on, don't you wanna profess your love for caesar?

Yeah, the lounge scares me. It's like weirdos and hobos are there.

You mean ppl like you?

I've been to like 6 that are P/F. Some have honors if you have top 10% or 25% or something.

That's because you've been mostly interviewing at really good schools. The better the school, the more likely it is that it's straight pass/fail.

uh oh, my kids are now repeating lines from madagascar but they have no idea what it means:

6-year-old ian: i want to get you something special because i love you

me:aww thanks ian that's sweet! what are you gonna give me?

ian: my first rectal thermometer

um, gee thanks...

Cherish it! How often do you get offered a rectal thermometer, let alone someone's FIRST rectal thermometer?

Just a trend I've noticed while researching schools. Makes sense too. Making a bunch of super hard working talented overachievers compete against each other in med school will probably drive the suicide rate sky high

no no! i work as a nanny. yikes, if he were mine i would have had him when i was 15!

and dingy, i have never before been offered one. not even once.

No brainer then, especially considering how much you love anal!

Had an interview at UCF today. It by FAR surpassed my expectations. Other than the fact that it's a new school, it has been supremely impressive in all respects.

Got a Tufts invite too, good day. Not too sure if I'll go tho.

I've noticed the trend as well and the best I can come up with is that graduates from those institutions do not need the grades so much to separate themselves in the residency application process whereas schools that are not as highly ranked offer more segmentation so that students can separate themselves from their peers.

For the record, I don't necessarily agree with the need to prove one's self if you don't go to a crazy highly ranked school. I'm just saying maybe that's why those "prestigious" institutions feel that they can go P/F without harming their students chances to get ahead in residency process.

Thoughts?

shutup!

i might be willing to forgive your jerkiness if you give me your tufts interview...🙂

oo i would consider giving tufts a go if you have the time and the money to get there. i was really pleasantly surprised by how much i liked it

I would if I could! Tell you what, how about I pick an interview date, then if one of you who still wants to interview there(say you, sammich, or ddub) get an interview later but want an earlier date, I'll withdraw it and we can time it so that one of you get the date.

Yea but it costs so dang much! I can't really justify picking there over OSU given the ~100k cost discrepancy. On second thought, I think I'll select a date first, see if I change my mind later on.

yeah i agree - tufts is way too expensive. one of their only flaws 🙁

I didn't think you did, but just checking.

Your clinical grades are much more important than your basic science grades, and many "P/F" schools have H/HP/P/F for those.

I kind of roll my eyes at P/F. Most schools hand out junior AOA to the top 10% and put your class rank in the deans letter, which basically negates the entire mission of P/F grading.

my 2 cents: P/F is largely a marketing thing.

wait dingyi, if you got accepted to your top choices, where would you most likely go?

I like that plan with tufts.

If only they would offer me an effing interview.

Already tipsy. Yay free social hour! I will more than likely be posting after my exploits at the bar later. Considering I'm on the train posting on SDN... *sigh*. Seriously y'all. What did you do yo me?

Well then they have sold me on the concept. I have friends at both, and the P/F is a clear winner...even if it is only for the first 2 years, and even if their are notes and rankings in the dean's letter that differentiate students performance somewhat.

If it was only a "marketing" thing, seems like more schools would do it instead of coming up with what I think is the real marketing BS - turning ABCDF into some variation of HH/H/P/F and selling students on their newfangled Pass Fail system - now that is the work of Mad Men...

I found that to be really annoying when I interviewed. It's really the same mentality that gives rise to P/F at most schools though. There's a desire to be seen as "chill".

No idea right now, but I really like OSU, Case, Vandy, and Mount Sinai! I really didn't think I had a shot at any somewhat higher ranked schools when I started applying, so the only highly ranked schools I ended up applying to were ones I would really, really love.

I missed out on goncrats.... I assume someone typo'd at one point.

I also just saw a commercial for Now 32.. THIRTY TWO! Holy damn, how many of those are they going to make?
when I was in Ireland in high school I saw something in the thirties then. Maybe it was an international thing? Wait, goodle says they're on NOW 73!!!

👍

Don't you love how so many of the schools are *ahem* "pass/fail..."

annoying as hell.

Mayo doesn't even have an honors society. 👍👍👍

And Hopkins only grades the important (IMHO) stuff. 👍

Don't know who else is really P/F.
Michigan is. They say they dont even rank during preclinical.

Yeah, who knows. But if it works at making people less cutthroat competitive, I'm down with it

Ps just finished at Michigan. It was great. And the last interview I had was amazing!! The interviewer was trying to convince me to move to MI to work in her lab this year. lol. But cool and really exciting stuff

Sounds like you nailed it! Congrats!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think OSU has a tiered honors/pass/fail system. The med student we talked to mentioned it, and she said that in general, students are so helpful that it never really bothers anyone. Hopefully that's the case?

You might be right.

I think Baylor said that when they went over to P/F, they were the last Top 20 to go over. So I do think that it's definitely something that "higher ranked" institutions are more likely to do. But honestly at this point, my understanding is that each school has such totally different grading systems that residencies hardly look at that stuff because if everyone has a different grading system then the grades are essentially meaningless; Step 1 and clinical grades are way more important. For me, P/F at least adds an illusion of being less competitive, so it's something I'm all for even if they're still ranking you behind the scenes; I know my classmates all seem to like this system.

Haha I expect tipsy posts later. Those are always funny 😀

Sooo I went to add a player and it says 'waiver pending'.

what does that mean?

I means it'll take about 3 days for your move to actually go through. That's just how the add/drop thing works.

Yea, I think the top 5% get honors, so actually trying to get it needs someone REALLY cutthroat. Most people won't bother.

woo inorganic lab wiki done.😀
i feel free as the wind!

you have a wiki for inorganic lab?

you have a wiki for inorganic lab?
yea.
we do it for our labs instead of a formal report.
kind of nice.
kind of pain in the butt.
especially when you have to come up with the procedure. turns you into a note taking madman (errr woman).
but now my wiki is all nice and pretty...even if I did have to fight it for the past two hours lol

can't other students access your lab report tho?

Yoooo. Mayo is sick. Possibly the best architecture I've ever seen in a hospital.

Any Halloween parties tonight? Tomorrow? What are people going as?

I've never done a costume party cause I just don't care, but my cousin got creative and is gonna be Forrest Gump. Hat, shirt, box of chocolates, the whole deal. And his friend is going as Jenny. Pretty genius.

Clark Kent. Ok, time to become productive and make my way towards going out for the night.
