I've forgotten about ads. It looks so much different without them.

But I do subconsciously hope that the ads are intertwined with my future, since I always saw the Baylor one. :xf:
 
Okay, this may be an old topic - but judging from some answers in the "top 10% of med school class" thread, I want 2014's opinion.

Do you think we will all have to study 8 hrs a day to just get by? All the students I've met at some great schools don't seem to need it, although the studying is heavily increased from undergrad.

Think about it - you're in class 5 hours a day absolute MINIMUM, probably more like 6-8 hrs. If you studied 8 hrs/day everyday (not including test time - obviously it increases), you wouldn't have enough time to take a crap let alone get 7-8 hrs of sleep.

Of course there will be the study 8 hr/day crew, but from my interviews it definitely seemed like they were the minority - and also the cream of the crop.

Thank you. No one seemed to study that much when I asked at UVA, Baylor, Vandy, and OSU.

I asked the students that question on interviews because my friend's brother is in med school and I always hear gloom and doom stories about 10hr+ study sessions very often. This guy is not the sharpest tool in the proverbial med-school shed and does a lot of "mind-altering" stuff, but he is incredibly hard working. If that's what works for him then fine, but I don't see myself doing that or needing to do that.

And what's the difference really between 5-6 hours and 8 hours of study? For some it's all relative. Me personally, my 8 hours of study would be blended in with cooking lunch, goofing off a little if studying in a group, and checking espn every now and then. For someone else, they may sit down for 6 hours with no distractions and just power through the material.

All the med students I've talked to have said that you basically will do what you have been comfortable with all along and add in methods that you find work best for you. I feel like you will be so immersed in studying medicine that you'll treat it like a full time job (40 to 50 hrs a week). I think this will be the theme most everywhere you go.

My main concern is finding a school that allows flexibility to incorporate those 50 hours of study + class with my free time activities and still stay sane!

I agree. Again I'm just hoping that they get the second-review phase going soon and get to my app and go "whoa, what was I on when I reviewed this the first time????" [outright acceptance] 😀

That's probably the case. I applied later than most of you, and my application at PSU and AECOM aren't even complete yet. I got a Tufts invite a week or so ago and I just got a "may" message from VCU today. I did apply to more schools(and lower ones at that) than just about all of you as well tho.
 
I'm hoping I can just go 1/1 on my lone interview and be done with this whole thing.... grrrr

All this gloom and doom about med school crap pisses me off. In the end, people pass up the real question and it all comes down to "I'm smarter than you..."

Haha... seriously, I mean it's more work than college, but it all comes down to what kind of grades you want to make. I'm not at the top of my class, but I'm not close to failing either, and I just blew off the entire last weekend to take a trip with friends. Life does not end when you enter med school, you just have to figure out how to allocate your time wisely, which is something anyone is capable of doing (though not everyone does).
