This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you guys and congrats.

Is the book Twilight good? So much hype. I might start it tonight.

Congrats everyone! I know this is supposed to be a thread about med school acceptance, but I'm super excited and need to vent it somewhere! I won a Marshall Scholarship and I'm going to get to study in London for a year before med school!! WOOO! (My boyfriend's a little sad that I'll be leaving him for a year, and I am too, but still WOOOO)

👍 Congrats!

Eh, it's ok. Not horrid, but not great either. Def. a girl book though.

Strangely enough, I have a friend who says he managed to get through all the books in 6 days 🙄 Everyone I speak to who's read it says they're horribly written but the story and the ideas are good.

It's a bestseller in YA-Fiction, so I avoid it like the plague. Other bestsellers in YA-Fiction? Gossip Girls.

:lame:

no. don't do it.

i disagree... it's horrid. the writing is truly terrible. granted, i'm a snob because my mom's a writer and i am a good writer (or so i've been told)... but still, i read the first twilight book and almost died because the writing was so bad. it reminds me of crap i used to write in eighth grade.

Invited to interview at SLU!😀😀

Hi friends... I'm on the last 3 mins of my lunch break but just wanted to stop by and share some wonderful news:

NYU INVITE!!!!!!!! :soexcited:

Congrats Blue and Jolt 🙂

Dude, that's pretty awesome! I kinda wish I had applied to NYU now lol, but they're pretty big on GPA so maybe I wouldn't have had a great shot.

oh, i almost forgot-yay anal pedie!😛

Sweet. 👍

= Harry Potter

Harry Potter wasn't actually THAT poorly written, I think she just got bored near the end and came up with the most stupid, campy end to the series possible 👎

Going to see that movie was my first date ever.

Wow, I would have thought offering to go to that movie would be an auto-reject.

harry potter isn't particularly badly written. it's juvenile, but hey... it's a kids book series. twilight is just so, so terrible. full of teenage angst... just awful.

i can't believe 7starmantis guy is a part of this club and i'm not. ridic.

Yeah Harry Potter is soooo much better than Twilight. I would encourage my eight-year old daughter to read HP. I would be mortified if she read Twilight... and then she'd want to marry Edward Cullen... and then she'd start going out with an abusive boyfriend. Because that's what happens when girls read Twilight. For realsies.

Twilight fails on two accounts: 1. It's vampire romance, and 2. It panders to every 15 year old girl's fantasies.

Let me repeat that: it panders to 15 year old girls' fantasies. Can you imagine having to suffer through reading that?

I'll stick with my classics and such. Anyone here read Three Men in a Boat?

I have not read it, but thanks to wikipedia, I now know that is exactly the sort of book that would result in massive blunt force trauma to my head.👍

agreed!! i feel like twilight just encourages girls that beauty is the most important thing and implies that becoming completely obsessive about a boy is a great thing to do. yuck.

Three Men in a Boat would cause the trauma? or Twilight?

Twilight, yes.

Three Men in a Boat is superbly witty humor, I found myself in tears at several points while reading, much to the amusement of those who were around me while I read.

loving all this twilight hate. i wasted hours of my life reading the first book, and somehow i feel like i'm getting revenge by trashing the series

in other news...

nerd alert! i'm making a spreadsheet for comparing medical schools so i can decide where to go in the spring. that is, assuming i get any more acceptances 🙂xf🙂. so far, categories i have are: pre-clin curriculum structure, clerkship structure/locations, housing, time spent in lecture, anatomy and histology lab features, location, cost, free clinic/community health opportunities, gym, USNWR ranking, grading scheme, frequency of exams, happy students, availability of faculty, do they rank students, whether tutors are available, how good the student health center is, whether there is some sort of wellness initiative to help with stress relief... other ideas? seriously. trivial or not, i'll add it to my list.

Both, I'm afraid, but for different reasons.🙁

<H1>Bank of America Can't Find Anyone Willing to Take CEO Job

Suddenly, it's the least attractive job in the country.
Bank of America has been searching for a new CEO for months, ever since battered Ken Lewis announced that he was stepping down. But no one wants the job.
Why not?
Because they'll have to listen to annoying government bureaucrats vilify them all day, says analyst Dick Bove of Rochdale Securities. Because they'll be unable to hire top people because of pay constraints. Because they'll be forced to chop up the company instead of reaping the rewards of scale. Because they'll be limited to a pay package that would make the average dime-a-dozen Wall Street managing director go bitching to his boss about how he was being underpaid.
All of which means, Bove says, that Bank of America's board once again looks incompetent. It also means that Bank of America's departing CEO, Ken Lewis, is still the man for the job.
Despite being trashed from coast to coast for overpaying for Merrill and Countrywide and then getting Bank of America in hot water with regulators, Lewis has actually done a much better job than most people think, says Bove. He knows the company cold. His acquisitions have worked out. Bank of America should find a way to get him to stay.

How is it hard to find a CEO? Give the job to me😀!

You must add food to the list, of course. And shopping (I'm a guy, and yet....). And the city itself (not the same as location!). And whether the Dean of Admissions likes corn chips better than potato chips.

If he or she does, the school's a sure winner.

hmm not sure if this would be appropriate for your table layout, but if residency opportunities or information about what specialties a school's students end up in are important to you, it's also something to consider

-attractiveness of student body.
-insect-free broccoli in salad bar

As an add-on to the whole hours-spent-in-lecture concept, I would throw in scheduled hours of on-campus time as well. The 8-12 schedule and the 8-5 schedule are vastly different beasts.

I had never heard of this twilight silliness until someone described it to me this weekend.

It sounds like the type of movie where they would permanently revoke my man card if I went to see it.

how could i forget food and shopping! :smack: actually, my schools are pretty much limited to boston and NYC, where i know i'll have access to either my mom's cooking or the same farmers markets and stores i go to now. win.

i have NO idea what i'm going to end up specializing in, so... it's harder for me to try to quantify those types of things since i have no idea what i'm looking for. but it's definitely something to consider!

I'd revoke it myself.

Can we go back in time and pretend like I don't play the homonym game?
