Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
for the last 3 days, our lab has been talking about behavioral abnormalities of health professionals. that women in alabama that got denied tenure and shot like 6 people (including the chair that supported her) apparently was a harvard phd that my PI knew and actually had killed her brother few years earlier.

and then one of the post-docs in my lab worked with a neurosurgeon resident in arkansas or something that previously stabbed her girlfriend 51 times and killed her, but no one did anything and he still became chief resident and one day committed suicide (he was also a RA for their dorms or something)

and then apparently they are kicking out a 3rd year med student out soon at penn or something for being a weirdo

i totally see yoda doing a pharma joint residency/fellowship, that thing is bank and great for a single person http://us.gsk.com/html/career/career-residencies.html

i was at a seminar last week, this one MD was giving a lecture on some new development in cardiology and he had to divulge his financial affiliations. he said he was a consultant for 81 pharmaceutical drugs/projects. how much do you think he's raking in?

I've actually been considering possible big pharma/ biotech careers. (I know someone cringed when they read this:meanie:). I even applied to a some of their summer internships although I don't think I quite have the background they're looking for for those.

what kind of background do they want?

yea i met a kid from penn law last summer, he graduated from law school and started working as a bartender cuz he couldn't get a job. he's doing great things (jersey shore quote)

I worked with a law grad at a movie theater for a while. He also was a bartender. In his defense, he was studying for the Bar but...

He doesn't work there anymore, so maybe he made it.

What got me was after tours but before interviews, everybody would go into super zone mode - hardcore looking at their file and everything. I felt very underprepared.

God somebody tell me to get off SDN and start doing my work that I have to have done by the end of the night. Bwah!!

I did, I did!!!

weights.gif

And now I'm doing some arm toning with little valeo weight things.. (hard to explain them. They're like ankle weights but you can use them for your arms too)

awww i love this smileyy good job for the workout 👍

So MDog, do you have any other options besides VCU right now? I assume you're still waiting to hear back from some more schools, too.

yea im waiting on a couple more but vcu is the one for now 🙂

r u def going to the second look?

wow, people do this? some people read interviewers' publications before md/phd interviews but i think thats totally useless as long as you understand basic methodology

Yeah, I'm definitely going unless I get into Baylor between now and then. Yeah, right.

why in the world would you need to study your own file? sounds like a weird addiction to cramming

I know. Odd.

what part of VA is VCU in?

Richmond, kind of central VA. 2 hours from DC, 2 hours from Norfolk, 1 hour from Cville.

i'mma try and sleep now, tommorow kicks off my hardcore school work schedule for the next 1.5 weeks. Trying to get my sleep cycle back on a sleep a little everyday schedule for maximum study efficiency.

nite Yoda!

Tonight's definitely a lot slower than last night.

That's probably a good thing, although my studying is slowing down a lot. I feel like I put too much energy into 1 test and not enough into the other 2.

what if LSU-NO Xplode offered you tons of loot

 Nice.

It's almost like they did already - 17k vs 42k - that's one big ass difference. If they offered me more, it would be really hard to say no.

I would just have to make sure I set up the other parts of my life to where I could DEFINITELY leave for residency.

I just fell asleep for 20 minutes and woke back up.

Also, my lymph nodes feel funny and I keep sneezing. I swear to god, if I'm getting sick again....

i knew your early sleeping was too good to be true! hope you're not getting sick again :luck:

my fantasy bball team is sick, why doesn't it auto set rosters if it can autodraft them

 lazy

Your team is sick, you beat me without trying. I'm not saying my team is amazing, but I'm pretty squarely in the playoffs right now. I'm probably a one and done in the playoffs, though. I just want to make them and I'll be happy.

 How did we both have a feeling Sammich wouldn't be gone for long?
haha, hey. I really did go to bed! It's not my fault I woke up after a ridiculously short time. I just took half an ativan. I can't keep this cycle perpetuating. So hopefully that will kick in soon. :xf:

I really would like to go to sleep in the next hour or two. I have to wake up before 8 and I really need sleep to help my brain tomorrow, which will be dead by 3pm.

yea definitely. if you invest your future that deeply in something, its equally as stressful and time consuming.

ask stein or anyone who has a fiance that applied to some other terminal degree

Getting into grad school (PhD) is not nearly as difficult for most schools, although at the top it's probably just as hard (ie Harvard, Hopkins, WashU, for bio anyway). Your GPA doesn't need to be flawless, GRE is important but not as do-or-die as the MCAT, plus it's much less unpleasant to study for and take. She studied for maybe 4-6 weeks on and off and did great. However, you have GOT to have serious research experience and great letters from people who've worked with you in the lab on a major project. Publications are a huge plus for upper-tier programs.

With her coming back every weekend carrying admissions materials with the $25k+ stipends listed on them, I definitely get jealous!

There's a lot of cookie talk in this thread.

Which is rough when a)I'm trying to lose weight and b) gave up sweets

1 big thing when it comes to giving up stuff for Lent - don't try and do too much!

I'm using this as a springboard to drastically reduce my soft drinks. It gets really hard when I'm working at the movie theater and they're right there and free... Good thing I only have one more kind of summer there.

caffeine and carbonation = awesome

I think I can do it. I did cheat once on the sweets, but it was rice pudding. It did have whipped cream though. I've had sugar free sweets though, but I don't count them.

I've been good on the no alcohol.

I'm gonna go see if I have anything quasi healthy I can eat.

I'm going to wake up a little earlier tomorrow and make myself breakfast like I was supposed to do today. That way I'll have brain food, plus I have no other breakfast food that doesn't require cooking.
