This is what I'm talking about. My salary is great, especially compared to other nurses in this same area working at the regional hospital or private sector. But I hear that docs are in fact not as competitive.

Just thinking about it, my brother pays nothing for his health insurance (company pays it all or whatever). I'm not sure what his out of pocket costs are in terms of what is deductible is or who he can see....but I pay no annual deductible and am free to see whomever w/out any penalties.

I wonder how the health car bill will affect the VA. No one seems to be talking about it around here.

To bad the docs get single out for that🙁. It's not surprising though seeing how all gov doc payments seem to lowball.

healthcare.gov tells me that tricare is unaffected, but we'll see what happens.

I pay $0.50 in healthcare costs a month -- for long term disability. My company gives me basic ppo coverage w/ CIGNA and I pay nada. my deductible is $901. not sure if that's high. I'm in the young, invincible health bracket :laugh:. I've gone to the doc 1x in the past 2 years.

in other news, Whole Foods Tomatillo Salsa is my new Frank's Red Hot -- I put that **** on everything!

I had it before my computer crashed this past summer. I haven't put it back on yet until I find the time to put all my songs from my iPod back on the computer.

I don't have it installed right now, because if I plugged my iPod in, it would sync and delete all of my 20+ GBs of music, a lot of which I'll never get back.

My dad worked in a VA for almost two decades and it seemed like the job was overall much more cush than his PP work, but we did make a ton less money.

LOL when I graduated, I thought it'd be easier getting a job, but science jobs were saturated. I lowered my sights to "anything." Still nothing even with my stellar resume...one place finally told me straight up they wouldn't hire me because I was overqualified.

My first job hired ALL B.A. and B.S. chem/bio grads to:

break down crates of Faultless spray starch and spray EVERY CAN to make sure it didn't sputter, then repack the crates. For $11 an hour.
I asked the mgr wtf did they hire ppl with degrees, and she said because they're smarter and more likely to be able to distinguish a sputter than some line worker.

After that, my crappy customer service job felt cushy.

I'll enjoy these next couple days where the shine hasn't worn off, yet...

You know, I am glad that I had to work throughout most of college, almost every summer, and during high school. Some of the people I graduated with have never had a real 40 hour a week, boss breathing down your neck-type job. And some of them are freaking out about it.

I agree.

Sometimes I wish I would have had more time during the summer to get EMT certified or something, but I had to work. I know people that just had their parents pay for their entire life, so they didn't have to work during the summers - they just traveled and were able to get certified in something. Unfortunately, this led to them getting clinical jobs that I couldn't get, but I know I'll be better off in the long run for putting in doubles at a crappy job.

I just don't know how adcoms can accept people that have never worked a full time job at least for a summer once in their life.

Do people realize they are getting themselves into 80+ hr workweeks here? How can you legitimately even have any idea of what that would be like if you've never even held a real job - if you just take classes year-round and work part-time in a lab, you know?

Applicants should have some sort of job experience, even if it's just flipping burgers or being a cashier at a grocery.

in better news, at&t is gonna exchange my phone🙂 it's coming in the mail so i'm stuck with this one another couple days. the touchscreen is randomly working right now, but has only been working ~25% of the time which is no fun. i have to sit here turning it off and on again til it feels like respnding haha.

I've decided that when I retire, I'm going to get a place next to the Everglades and sit on a dock with a nice book and a rifle/shotgun. Then I will just shoot invasive species all day. 👍
 
for yoda or maybe anyone else who might know. I always wondered how is it that people say the average debt is like 200k for med school...it makes no sense.

for example, I have 30k in debt from undergrad, but after 4 years of interest its really more like 50k. Now for med school assuming i get no free money its going to run me about 55k a year for my state school. So 4 years later im at 220k...now after including interest on both undergrad and med school loans for 4 years that has to increase the total to near 300k-350k or so...

so in reality im going to be about 350k in debt after graduation. Even if i had no undergrad debt it seems like the 200k debt line is just too low or people just dont think about interest? This really freaks me out. At 350k debt i mean your loan payments have to be what 4k a month? With all the new reforms and crap i need to become a rural doc or something so people forgive all my loans lol...🙁

I'm no financial expert, but it's probably this.

I know I didn't start thinking about interest until fairly recently.

lol if only...most of my undergrad loans already accrued interest. I took out 25k in undergrad...by the time i graduated there was 9k in interest added to my direct loans account.


sadly i have a private loan of 6.5k too......i wish i never took that damn thing. Its going to ****ing own me by the time med school is done. IM going to owe like 45k just for that stupid 6.5k loan once med school is done...Sometimes i think it would have been better to never go to school lol.
