Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
lol if only...most of my undergrad loans already accrued interest. I took out 25k in undergrad...by the time i graduated there was 9k in interest added to my direct loans account.

sadly i have a private loan of 6.5k too......i wish i never took that damn thing. Its going to ****ing own me by the time med school is done. IM going to owe like 45k just for that stupid 6.5k loan once med school is done...

😱

for yoda or maybe anyone else who might know. I always wondered how is it that people say the average debt is like 200k for med school...it makes no sense.

for example, I have 30k in debt from undergrad, but after 4 years of interest its really more like 50k. Now for med school assuming i get no free money its going to run me about 55k a year for my state school. So 4 years later im at 220k...now after including interest on both undergrad and med school loans for 4 years that has to increase the total to near 300k-350k or so...

so in reality im going to be about 350k in debt after graduation. Even if i had no undergrad debt it seems like the 200k debt line is just too low or people just dont think about interest? This really freaks me out. At 350k debt i mean your loan payments have to be what 4k a month? With all the new reforms and crap i need to become a rural doc or something so people forgive all my loans lol...🙁

It's because a lot of people have parents who pay for everything, and so they only take out the 8k in subsidized loans (or less). In other words, average a bunch of 32k's with 250-300k's and you get an average debt figure that looks artificially low.

yah im an idiot. I wish i just knew what i was doing back then. Im the only person in my family to even go past high school. So i tried my best but just did some stupid things. I took the loan in 2007 and since then its got about 10k in interest. So i figure 4 more years of interest im looking at 15 k or so. So i guess its more like 30k ish, but still ridic.

With all the new reforms and crap i need to become a rural doc or something so people forgive all my loans lol..
which is not all that easy despite what many posters around here like to think/say. I live in an extremely rural area that is defined (by the govt) as undeserved...the best loan repayment I've heard of was one FM doc who got 90K over three years. At least its something I suppose....but it hardly dented his 350k debt. If you work for the VA, you may be eligible for a 60K repayment over 5 years, but Im learning that being eliglbe is ultra tricky and generally very few people are awarded it, or some of it.

and Metallica, I 100% agree with your thoughts about pre meds needing to have actual real life working experience. key words being real life and working. 👍

dont feel so bad. one of my friends managed to rack up ~60-70k going to Cal Poly.....and she majored in......history!

she owed close to 90K about two years ago...

Working as a rural doctor takes some real passion. And your hours are uncontrollably long...

what about those things where if you work at a 501c or w/e for 10 years as a family prac/internal med doc you have all loans forgiven? I always heard that touted at a lot of fin aid presentations. If i do go that route it seems good? I havnt looked into much as idk if i would even do general internal med or family med but im not against it depending on my interests and how finances work. If specialist payments start to really decrease by 2014 because of these new laws, id def be open to family med or something if loan forgiveness is good.

What do doctors realistically make these days, anyways? I know how much the ER docs I work with make more or less, but that's inflated due to them extending their practice to another hospital.
I realize it will change by 7 yrs from now, but is there a thread or info about this? I see studies on the internet but have no idea whether to believe it.

if you look through some of the physician specific forums there was a link to current studies about how much they make. In general the lowest on average were talking is about 150k and thats family medicine. From there its only up. In fact im kinda bored maybe ill go find it again 😛

Elijah, this I am not sure about....however, none of the FM/IM docs I know are taking advantage of this, so it makes me wonder how available it truly is or it comes with some outrageous strings (such as the VA ERDP program I mentioned). Perhaps I am just not close with any docs who are privy to such reimbursement....I mean, somebody must be using it right? 😕

Its absolutely worth looking into though. Anything is better than nothing.

i was under the impression that it was only 220k of med school debt...not total

130K here at the VA for FM, starting. But as mentioned before, they are making less than PP docs.

I was under the impression that general Peds was less than FM on average.

me too....but I don't think most people consider it that way.

I wonder what the average undergrad debt it, just out of curiosity.

acording to the 2008 study i looked at, peds was slighty more. Though by 2014 when most of this reform kicks in and gov panels decide payments who knows. Cuts are 100% for sure going to come from that, i just dont know how much. Nor does anyone else probably. I think expecting the gov to not cut payments is probably slightly insane 😛

THat would vary way too much. People like met and ksmi who have great in state cheap options and average/middle class parents could probably get away with near nothing in debt (which i think you guys have?) People like me who live in CA where everything is expensive and dying not so much lol...Id say if you dont live in CA or NY and have at least some parental support, its probably fairly possible to graduate with <10-15k or so if you tried?

What a bastard. You need to shoot it.

I've decided that when I retire, I'm going to get a place next to the Everglades and sit on a dock with a nice book and a rifle/shotgun. Then I will just shoot invasive species all day. 👍

i really would if i could, but i have no gun. i don't think i've ever wanted to physically harm an animal until now!! i was talking with the mom and we both think there's something seriously wrong with it-like you bang on the door to get it to go away and it flies over to another window and goes at it again! i wonder if birds can get rabies?

i agree with the whole working thing too. i knew a girl in college who'd never worked a day in her life and was sooo spoiled because of it. i think her dad had a good intention since he'd worked super hard to put himself through school and didn't want her to have to do the same, but it def backfired. i understand not working while in school, but my kids will at least have full time jobs during the summer.

all this debt talk is really scary! especially with the somewhat uncertain future we seem to have now with this bill. oh well, i'm in it for the long haul at this point.

thats basically my train of thought now too...but for some reason charging blindly into something that is going to be the basis of your future life worries me lol. But yet im still going to do it 🙂. It could all work out not bad i guess, no one knows. Being the cynic that i am though, i cant imagine the gov passing something so major and having it actually work for all to a T.😛.

On a more happier topic, its a beautiful day today! And i went running for the 1st time in a loooooong time last night. I need to be less lazy before med school..

i'm worried too, but hopefully it works out in the end🙂

yay running though!!

Pretty much what I was thinking. I was charged $100 a credit hour up to 12 credits..after that it was a flat rate of $1200 dollars.

The internet at my apartment hasn't worked for almost 12 hrs. 😡

didn't pay the bill? restart the modem?

i'm trying to sift through all these financial aid forms. vandy's second look actually reminded me that i need to make a decision soon, and financial aid will be a factor i haven't thought about yet (but fafsa and needaccess have been done since last month...i'm talking individual school things)

So I was planning on getting up at 1 from my nap and studying for almost 3 hours, which would have been decent.

Instead, I just got up and now need to learn over a month of class in 40 minutes.

This could be interesting.

Just tried to split the audio between my system and the TV and it's not working. I guess I need an A/V splitter.

But I did test out my sub with my iPod and it's pretty damn loud. 👍 It's so excessive for just my room.

C's get degrees.

alright. time to get ready for class. I've been studying a bit over the last few days so I'm not going in totally blind. But it all depends on her questions. She's the type that will put really obscure ones. There are only 36 and they cover so much, it's hard to tell.

We will see!

The CUPCAKE TRUCK is coming to my office!!!!!! OMFG I'm so HAPPY!!!! pldsijfa-oewnpodsnf!!! !!!!! !!!

One of the primary reasons for this is that the quoted average debt for each school is 4 years old and doesn't reflect the often large tution increases in the years in between.

In all the data I've seen people with 0 loans are not counted, but this still leaves people with large family help or scholarship who took out minimal loans to drag down the average.

I thought interest didn't start compiling until after graduation????
If interest accrues or not is dependent on the type of loan. But the interest doesn't not capitalize (get added to the principal) until after you graduate.

What do doctors realistically make these days, anyways? I know how much the ER docs I work with make more or less, but that's inflated due to them extending their practice to another hospital.

Depends on the type of doc there's a really wide range. Family practice is generally 150-200k in PP. Most other specialties are higher.

not always true. Interest does occur during your time in school but only on the unsub loans(or some gov loan i forget which one.)

Yeah, and you get 8k in subsidized loans for med school.

There are programs that will pay for your COA if you sign a contract as a med student promising to go into primary care.

Try going cable box ---> TV ---> sub

it would be very sad if a cupcake truck crashed. poor cupcakes lying uneaten all over the road

Try going cable box ---> TV ---> sub

Just tried again with this.

I think the problem is that my TV doesn't have an audio out. 😕
I can only get sound from the TV or the speaker, not both at the same time. I tried running the sound to the TV and then running another cable to the speaker, but after every combination it won't work.

I guess I'll just have to deal with two remotes and the powered system all the time, not just when I want music or a game.
