Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I drive an 04 Camry 🙁

I felt pretty good at both schools, but I suppose I'd be more comfortable staying in Florida. I do hate the cold, but I like the students at both places, maybe even a bit more at Case.

I read on MSN or something that Cleveland has one of the lowest, if not the lowest, average temperatures in the country.

As for the Camry, you fail.

i think research is kinda overrated
i was at pitt and one of the students were like yea i came here for the research opportunities
so i asked her what her project was. she said it was comparing a real ER to the ER in TV shows. you dont need a renowned research school to pull that **** off

i've actually looked up the funding of all labs on NIH RePorter
there's a few labs that are bringing in bank

avS is probably gonna retire soon though (he won a nobel)

not only does case cost 10k a year more, Miami's loans should be better across the board

Case
Pros
a lot more research funding
lower cost of living
PBL/no grades (i think)
affiliated with the Clinic

Miami
Pros
one huge busy ass hospital thats kinda in a mess (personality)
cheaper overall/better loans
me
if you are looking for research, the optho/bascom palmer is pretty balling and i think it has been flat out the best optho

Yea, another prob is that Case's money is need based, and so if my family's financial situation turns for the better(hopefully), I might not get that 20k grant anymore later on.

Dude, you know a lot about research, could you walk me through the process? Like how is Case better for research? Is it more selection, better projects, better known PI's, etc. etc.?

other unnecessary cool things:

Simulation Clinic

I thought Miami was hands-down the best/biggest one in the country and they didn't make you sit you through that crap for 3 hours (which is 2 hours more than what a med students would ever use)

hey t rex, where've you been!
new boyfriends demand a lot of attention lol.
what I learned by spending time with the said boyfriend: do not give marshmallows to a study-delirious boy...unless you want to fall off your chair laughing 🙂

I think I've given up the idea on doing research somewhere else after M1. The only stuff I found is mad competitive cancer research programs, and I'm not sure if I'm going into that. It would just be easier and cheaper to stay at the home institution; maybe use some loan money for traveling.

Plus I don't even like research that much, it would just be a resume builder.

more funding at Case. better known PIs, more seminars. Lerner also does research too, and they have a few cool labs.

the thing about miami is people dont know how to use the internet over there yet, and its really annoying

Yea, their simulation lab is friggin crazy, it's like they invented the thing 😉

what I learned by spending time with the said boyfriend: do not give marshmallows to a study-delirious boy...unless you want to fall off your chair laughing 🙂

lol, are you going the route of jla with a younger boy? those marshmallows can be dangerous in the wrong hands you know.... :meanie:

I see, so what would be the purpose of research, how does it really help someone's medical career?

OK, it's decision time, any suggestions for Case vs. Miami? Case has the better reputation, but costs at least 10k a year more. Miami has the better location, but doesn't quite have the reputation of Case. Although I'd like to do some research in med school, I don't intend to go into academics. I'll x-post this on the school specific board too.

You seem to like Miami more. So I'd pick there.

Is it the little that was crushing on you?

I drive an 04 Buick Century. Grandma cars FTW!

So JJ, brooklyn offered me 2 trades:

1 - Teixeira, Phil Hughes, CC for Morneau and Halladay
2 - Teixeira, Ian Stewart, Fuentes and CC for Morneau and Utley

What do you know about Fuentes? (FWIW, my relief pitching is Hoffman, Cordero, and Clayton Richard - I don't think any of them are doing well)

I like this if you need a reliever and he will give you a different one. Teixeira will be fine, probably the 4th-5th best 1B you can have. Ian Stewart is a downgrade from Utley obviously but the pitching you'll get is great.

I'm trying to figure out Fuentes v Rausch. Rausch probably has the Twins' closer job on lockdown, right?

why do you assume that?!
....and you don't even want to know lol

I discovered last night somewhere between studying about bicoid/gap/pair rule/etc genes and protooncogenes that marshmallows are extremely dangerous in wrong hands lol

drosophila patterning genes 👎thumbdown👎

if you dont want to do academic medicine, then there isnt much benefit (besdies that learning to think bs) besides the fact that you kinda have to compete against others

I am all for girls dating younger guys. We all need sugar mommas!

you guys all drive such brand new cars

i drive either 94 camry or a 03 camry

dude that's 2 cars, makes up for the not new thing

well you said he's study-delirious, so i assume he's not a senior like you since seniors in their last semesters = DNC, and that leads me to conjecture that he's younger.

i's sherlock, homiez

Yes...he is. We do not talk of these things.

I do not have a car 🙁 but I have an amazing friend who is going to Berkeley for the summer and leaving her car with me. Sha-zam!

yea, i dont think the association is all the strong though, i think its more of an independent place. or how mount sinai used to be part of nyu until like 3 years ago

Thx for the input 😀 Oh and ksmi, Buicks are awesome, but it'll be craaaaazy awesome if u put spinners on em 😎

I kinda heard that you have to do research to be a great doc or something? I guess learning new ways to cure diseases is pretty cool and all, and I think I would fit an investigative style, but I don't want it to be like my sole purpose or anything. So what's with practicing physicians who do research? Do they have their own labs? Do you have to go to a top residency? Do you have to do a lot of research in med school to do that? (By "have to" I mean it would be "very advantageous to")

Until SDN, I always thought great doctors were all about spending time with patients and stuff, but apparently not.

The whole world is about research, and I'm not.

Maybe I'll fall in love with clinical research or maybe I just had a bad first exposure in that diabeetus lab. I dunno.

agreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed. as soon as we started on that section I instantly regretted offering help studying. lol

aw lawd!

haha you are sherlock. but not all seniors are DNC...I have tons non-senioritis-infected friends who are doing things with their lives right now.

Some specialties seem like they require some type of research. But I really don't think it's hard to do/publish research (clinical) in med school. Just my impression.

This Evolution test shouldn't be too hard since I learned 1/3 of the material in Herpetology from the same professor.

Last non-final test of undergrad, gotta make it through...
