yea its not hard at all, they aim for less stringent journal though (but their results are a bit more clear-cut than basic science, which can be eghh sometimes)

the thing about basic science research
1. if you are doing something truly brand new, which means a grant hasn't been written on it, a PI will only publish 1 or 2 papers before starting to write a grant. most PIs like to write during the summer (stay home with their kids), which is when you are rotating - if you end up in one of these projects, you will be getting prelim data, which is exciting but frustrating and not always publishable
2. grants come before pubs, almost always
3. some labs aim for high tier journals, which take a lot more time
4. now you almost have to have an in-vivo module, which means - 1 or 2 years of full time research (more if you make a transgenic mice) or sharing the load with someone. if you share a load with post-doc they will probably get preferential authorship


i say def stay in the clinical side unless you like the basic aspect. it takes a summer to pick some stuff up and you dont want to be making plasmids and doing ELISAs the whole summer
 
miami has a sick ENT dept by the way, if you are into that. again, bascom palmer has sick stuff and so does sylvester cancer center. sylvester is campaigning for a NCI designation so hopefully that works out. i think they have good paralysis center too
 
if you live on the east cost, and wanna buy a car, NYC is the best way to do it

guarantee they will be cheaper (higher cost of maintenance there) and will have less miles on them
 
Yeah I already know I'm not interested in basic science (biological/medical, at least) in med school. Too long, too much time investment required to publish.

I've never done clinical research, what does that entail? Is it just basically collecting and analyzing data?

yea. so lets say you are doing something in cards. doctors might have files of ultrascan images and you might have to go back into them, take the measuremesnts of the walls/dialysis during systole/diastole. upload/organize data

Umm, so how does a clinical research start? Who comes up with the hypothesis? The treatment plan? Does it need to be conducted in conjunction with some sort of basic science research? Like testing the practical application of it?

Not from what I've seen. It seems like a lot of random stuff is publishable.

it does not have to be in conjunction with a basic science project. it can be. you can have serums sent for ELISAs or mRNA expression (pretty quickly done)

so when you are a fellow, you could write a grant or be on track to be part of the university fauculty. you then come up with an original project with an original hypothesis (probably something you learned during training). you develop it and pursue related studies throughout your career, move on up in the department. you have medical students (us) and residents work on the project (whoever you can get, because personnel funding isnt much)
 
I think will end up private practice or private hospital. I probably won't mind clinical research, but I definitely don't see myself doing it for the rest of my career.

I want to actually doctor, not research. I would have pursued PhD if I wanted that. I guess I can rule academic medicine or becoming faculty at an awesome teaching hospital out. :laugh:
 
you could still be faculty of a med school, you dont really have to do research, you can be a clinical professor. as long as you bring in the dolo

OK, I see...that doesn't seem too bad. I've been having a hard time mostly because I see Case as a great opportunity, so I want to make sure that I don't pass on it without thoroughly think about how and if I can/want to make use of it.

:meanie: my last gf was 6 months older than me - so not really a cougar; but it was fun. I don't know why, but I seem to be a lot more mature than most girls I meet (who are my own age). When did that happen? I thought girls were supposed to be more mature than guys... feels like false advertising. 🙁

My girlfriend is 9 months older than me. I'm pretty young for the class year, so I became used to the idea that almost any girl I dated in my class would be older than me.

You can say that all you want, but I'm personally sick of guys getting walked (having an ugly girl handed to them) and thinking they are all-stars. Anybody can play t-ball or hit a 70mph piece of cheese, I'm the type that goes after that 2-seamer with some bite.
 
oh that was actually in response to someone wondering if its okay to play in astroturf during inclement weather
