I thought the Coast Guard was going to set the ocean on fire to fix it?

They're trying to but the leak has yet to be repaired and may not be completely for months. Also, there's the issue of trying to contain the oil from drifting closer to shore and spreading outward. It looks like bad news bears for sure.

I heard that, but it's not going to fix it entirely. It might fix some stuff out in the Gulf, but the oil is already starting to enter the coastal wetlands and stuff.

There was a pretty strong smell when I went down to my house yesterday, it's right next to the river.

Usually I am not for government intervention, but in this case, I believe BP needs to be held financially accountable to a large extent. This is absolutely ridiculous. I'm aware they're losing a lot of money because of the loss of oil, but they need to contribute financially to fixing this mess. Maybe that kind of accountability would caution other companies to take greater precautions.

BP screws up, yet we are punished with higher gas prices...

Sentinel, thanks for that post earlier about the oil spill. I've been thinking about it a lot recently, and it really sucks.

This spill could ruin Louisiana for years, maybe even decades. Once this stuff seeps into the wetlands (that we've been trying to restore for a long time), the results will be catastrophic. It's already happening. The seafood industry will die, people will lose their livelihoods, and seafood prices will shoot through the roof. The wetlands are already in trouble and this spill will just make things worse - the grasses will die and erosion will increase. There will be dead marine life littering the shores and our coastal havens and fishing hotbeds will go to crap.

This sucks. 🙁 Things had turned around for south LA after Katrina, and then this happens. Hopefully they can fix it soon.

Hopefully they'll levy a sick fine at them and give all of it to you guys (unlikely but it would be the right thing).

That always happens instantly, crude is up $4.50ish since the announcement of how humongous this thing really is.
