Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
craigslist is pretty good. found a tenant and a back-up tenant to sublet my apartment w/n 24 hours. furnished my entire place for $140 total with pretty new furniture (putting different parts together). my apartment was really grown and sexy.. even though there were mad cockroaches hiding

sentinel, you should totally take over my lease.

$635/month for a fully furnished studio. 47th and pine. its a lovely walk to penn. the last 2 tenants before me all worked at penn before going to med school (sinai/mayo/and me) and the current tenants are econ grad students

def the cheapest studio in u-city. its kinda far, but ample parking off street. however, you won't be able to drive to med school anyway so yea idk.

some of the rowhouses on spruce look mad beat, but they are REALLY REALLY nice inside. def wouldn't judge philly homes by its outside look.

every philly apartment will most likely have urban roaches/palmetto bugs and maybe mice problems (i never had mice problems but some of my friends in center city do)

again, padmapper.com for apartment hunting. beats craigslist, imo

Ever since you first mentioned padmapper I've been randomly stalking it. I might wanna stay on campus first year though because I don't know anyone in the city at all and it would be convenient. A part of me wants to live off, however.

its pretty crazy, i paid like a billion dollars a month in NYC housing. near 700 for like a 300 sqft philly apartment, and im now looking for an apartment under <400 a month.

how far are the "on-campus" apartments.

there's a good chance an apt in philly will not have AC if its off-campus (you have to install your own). also, parking in center city is a bitch, and after the 3 + 20'' snowfalls, i would think underground garages are $300-$400 a month now ($500 or + for rittenhouse)

Not really my decision. 4 days for other people to make decisions.

Just assume you won't be getting more than $16k and go from there, I say. If you get a scholarship it will be an added bonus 👍

flyers dominating the bruins tonight

I know. I can still hope. Nothing wrong with that.

It's still a pretty good deal for WashU. Only about 6-7k more per year than LSU-NO, unless I'm underestimating their tuition.

You are.

yeah, and at the risk of sound like a jerk... if you don't have tremendous family financial need, you should be very grateful to be offered any scholarship money-- and $16k is a significant amount!

that said, i get that it's frustrating to be left hanging and told what you were told by the dean 🙁

Yeah - I am not going to bring a car so I was only looking at places within walking distance.

I realize this, and I am thankful. But financial need is a very unfair process to me. Just because my parents have money doesn't mean I get any of it, so please don't bring that into this.

Okay, you're right. Even though I can't search anything because of my stupid computer, I saw that tuition was 48,800. Is that right? 😱

Yeah.

I'll be back after the 15th. Have a nice week.

wow, sorry. was not meaning to offend. guess you won't see this now anyway. 🙄

guys, it's kind of lame to draw attention to a silly thing like this with those posts. something that's not a big deal that ksmi and i can handle through PMs ends up being something that is made fun of. i personally don't appreciate it.

Sorry, I guess that was my way of trying to use sarcasm to mitigate the situation. 😳

I sincerely apologize.

I'm pretty sure people were just looking for excuses to post weird pictures of llamas, or at least I was. Chill, it's just the internet.

 not necessary.

i only say this because in this thread people do that all the time, often at my expense. what this teaches me is that SDN turns me into an idiot. so i'm in the process of blocking it on my laptop so i won't be tempted by this time suck.

I hear ya, I actually almost never visit this thread....good luck on your endeavors.

What a sincere apology. 🙄
I'm actually rather worried about this myself. My parents have worked really hard and they have saved and amassed some asettes. I am hoping my age (a bit older than you guys) makes things different.....although they do support me in some ways, I dont believe that my dad claims me on his taxes. I'm a white girl so that doesn't help much either. I forsee myself getting zero scholarship or financial aid. 🙁

You won't get anything from private schools, public schools for the most part go straight off fafsa.

Once you are 24 it doesn't matter...for the fafsa.

What is this weird surfing thing on cruise ships? Anybody tried it? Looks weird.

I've seen that. I kind of though; huh, if you go to all the trouble of surfing on a ship, why not just try to surf in the ocean.

👍 i approve of this strategy

Yeah, it's 48,800 but the tuition is stabilized and guaranteed not to increase during your 4 years there.

👍 I approve the use of llamas to detract attention away from otherwise awkward/weirdly dramatic situations. Llamas are expert thread derailers -- we might as well use their powers for good!

which will be based off my income right? I make around 80K pre taxes...so Im probably screwed.

please excuse my ignorance. and thanks for answering my questions drizz....always look forward to your posts (even if I do have a bit of a reading comprehension problem 😳).

dramallama >>> awkward turtle. my compu hates the awkward turtle.

I think it does matter, I'm 24 and the finaid office at Case told me that every year my need based scholarship is reevaluated depending on my parents' income(I asked specifically about that, since I obviously won't have any income myself). The Miami finaid office also told me that I'd be getting some school loans due to my FAFSA results.

unless you are a ksmi academic all star with a 3.9/37+ mcat or something or a URM theres just not a lot of aid it seems no matter what. Im azn so obvi dont get a bonus there though im about as need based as it comes on paper. My mom makes 10k a year, i have a son and a wife, combined we make <30k and my EFC is 0. So far from 3 fin aid packages that has got me jack **** for free money. Im not saying im as poor as they come but i mean, im pretty sure im likely more need based then 95% of most people entering med school. The best aid i got so far was 13k in free grants per year...other schools gave me like 5k in need based...its sad.

Also unless you are accepted to top schools like harvard, duke, etc there just doesnt seem to be any real money out there, which is part of my problem since im not at a single top school. And the one top school i might attend is in cali and having a huge bidget crisis .

That's a lot of money man. Be happy. 👍

That's bc it's a private school. If it's only by fafsa then it's diff.

totally not me.
...its sad.
Indeed. I dont wanna drag politics in here, but I wonder how far congress is removed from this subject. Most of them have so much money that sending one (or more) of their children to medical school wouldn't be much of an inconvenience financially.

I will not be at a top tiered school either. My best hope is University of Wash via WWAMI linkage. If I promise to come back and practice in my home state for 3 years after residency, I'll owe just short of 50K. Though I am guessing that is for tuition only and living expenses will be a whole other matter. :scared:
