Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got the breakfast sampler. 🙂

And I did ok on both quizzes, but not so hot on the actual exam. Hopefully I do better this time.

the breakfast sampler's pretty good too, good variety.

sounds like you're still rocking it overall, good start to a great career, eh? 👍

So I haven't really kept up with the healthcare thing since my interviews, anybody know what's taken effect thus far? I hurt my knee pretty badly a lil over a week ago, but I haven't gotten it checked out yet since I don't have insurance, anybody know if I can get covered now, before I get med school insurance?

seems like sammich needs to put the "i'm a girl" title back on 😀

What, you're going to hurt your knee tomorrow? Perhaps you should get an insurance policy today?

How did you hurt it? *no one is seeking medical advice*

so i just got my 1st yr schedule and...im scared:scared:. It seems since we do anatomy right away + pbl, ill be in class from 9am-3pm or 9-4pm everyday...is this normal? or does my school just enjoy causing pain. It seems like i wont be leaving my house at all period for 1st year?

just for the hell of it i looked at the 2nd yr schedule and it was still like 9-3 everyday, though its class from 9-12 and then from 1-3 its pbl or preceptorships so its not as bad i suppose? still 1st year looks awful i can see why people say its the worst.

also at least the 1st month of M1 classes since we do biochem, cell bio, and physio seems like a whole lot of review. The topics are all like neuromuscular junctions, stem cells, transport, protein synthesis and degradation, etc etc...i know its going into more depth in med school but still ive gone over that stuff soooooo much in undergrad since i majored in that, i wonder how much that is going to help? any thoughts yoda?

where are you going to school?

I.

Am not sober.

I'm not super drunk anymore.

Because I ate more than my body weight at ihop.

I can't breathe I'm so full.

I approve of both these statements 👍

I think the class schedule's approximately the same at Penn too. I think only a few schools have shorter lecture days - those are the ones that focus much more on "self study"

going to lectures no matter what because you feel like you need to get your money's worth --> sunk cost?

Yeah, I'm gonna need to get over the need to go to lecture. I rarely pay attention and my time will be better spent in lab. I'll just really need to motivate myself to watch the lectures like that night or something.

Wow I made out pretty well, paying 525 a month for a 2br townhouse

I'm paying like $565 for my part of a 2br apt. Not too bad for the area. There are just so many other things to worry about!!!

Signing my lease and moving in on Thursday though!!! 😀

street parking but its a private lot apparently. i dont know how cars work in the snow lol.

This is why I splurged for the covered garage parking spot.

Hey hey people!

So here I am, packing up all my stuff, and I am having a serious debate with myself as to whether or not I should save my notes from college. Granted, mind you, I have the majority of these notes typed up anyway and saved to my computer. Why must I be such a pack rat?

So... Should I throw them away or save them? Haha I come to you for the answer even though I know what your answer will be...

I used to save all my college notes with the intent of passing them on to my younger friends. Had them all tucked away in folders and stuff. Yeah, that didn't last past my freshman year. Too much work.

I managed to somehow avoid Walmart for about six months! And now, I've gone to that store three times in the past two days. That place is such a time vortex. Seriously, I went there for one thing tonight, and somehow, I managed to spend 45 minutes there. 😱

There's no Walmart super close to where I live. It's tragic. But I guess I can drive there when need be.

And L what can I say - women love a guy who knows his tech. And they also love a guy who's.. dexterous w/ his glove / fingers etc.

... aaaaaand g'nite folks!

That whole conversation was awkward. But this took the cake.

monday night?

hahaha

I went out last night with a friend. It was the weirdest bar ever, it was like above a Chinese restaurant and they played weird techno music until everyone got drunk and then played like good music.

Coincidentally enough, the place I'm living at is the closest to campus (literally across the street from the med bldg/hosp)

Also, I'm not the splurging type (i come from a poor family lol)

Damn... this is why I didn't want to go to a school in a big city. So freakin expensive... and I'm like 15 minutes from campus

I love how quickly schools are able to slap you with your tuition bill, but of course it'll take a lot longer to receive your aid.... Haha

I know they have to wait until school starts to disburse aid...they should do the same with tuition. 😀

yea i don't have an email address - but I do have a tuition bill!

And there's a "Voluntary Library Gift" on my bill.

Anybody has recommendations for an awesome coffeemaker/espresso machine?

my kitty was trying to climb unto my plate of lunch! She has been acting reallllly weird lately!

I am just going to have to bite my tongue when it comes to that North vs. South thread that's happening right now. 😡

Seriously. South gets a bad rap. I've taken vacations to the real South (e.g., not FL), and people were nicer there than anywhere non-rural up north.

Yikes! I have a feeling my schedule is going to be pretty similar to that. :scared:

I know they have to wait until school starts to disburse aid...they should do the same with tuition. 😀

Yeah, I don't get it. It just doesn't make sense to me because we are paying our tuition with the aid... So you would think that the aid would necessarily need to come first... Right?

And there's a "Voluntary Library Gift" on my bill.

 I wonder if you could choose to remove that gift from your bill... I mean, it is "voluntary," right?

Yeah, I know! I started to write out this long post about how basically you're going to find mean people, bigots, racists, xenophobes, homophobes, idiots, etc. everywhere. It's definitely not limited to the South. Anyway, I decided it just wasn't worth it to start a flame war on SDN over it.

Funny story about this. At UIUC they load up your bill with $200 worth of "voluntary" donations/fees at the beginning of every semester. You can get it refunded, but they make it damn impossible to do so.

You must redeem it in person at a certain office on campus.
The hours during the day in which they will handle refunds are from something like 1-3PM.
There are only 4 days FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL FEE/DONATION on which you can receive your refund.
None of the fees/donations have refunds on the same day.

This means you have to come 6-7 several different times, on specific dates, during specific times, for you to be able receive your "voluntary" refunds. Now that's how you run a scam.

my kitty was trying to climb unto my plate of lunch! She has been acting reallllly weird lately!

Maybe she's setting her grand plans into motion. Or she's just trying to see how much she can push you before you turn into crazy cat lady

There's a north vs. south thread? o.0 This is why I never leave the 2014er thread  Go crazy premed tools.

Being not-white, I totally agree with this. Although, I did have a hilarious moment in north carolina: I was driving my car, a bunch of red neck white kids in their truck pass by and yell out "yo [n-word] get the [f word] out of our state". I yelled back "I'm Indian you *****". Most hilarious racist moment ever. I'm not even close to looking black either

I've had firefighters in NYC start a fight with me and my friends thinking we were terrorist sympathizers (this was a little bit after 9/11). That was really funny because I'm a hindu, and hindus and muslims (if you want to say "all muslims are evil" like these firefighters) have been at each others throats for longer than America has existed.

Am I the only one who finds racism funny because, usually, it's completely stupid and makes no sense? And also preached by *****s? Anyway I digress - my point was - yea there's bigots in both north and south. Since the north tends to be more metropolitan and mixed, it seems like there's less here. But it's not actually true.

/facepalm

I just couldn't resist posting in that thread after I read it like that.

Before i left gainesville i'd been feeding this stray cat every day. he was sooooo skinny before i started feeding him, now he's all big and muscular. I named him Thunder, last name Cat. I couldn't get him to respond to that name though, or to anything except tuna fish for that matter

Damn.

Now I wish I had changed my name to ThundercatMD instead of CougarMD.

I attempting to stay out of it but some of those comments are ******ed....people in the sound can only be nice if they are not from the south? where is that logic coming from?!

Eh..I am white and even I manage to run into stupid ppl sometimes who decide that since I am Russian I must be a mail order bride....a communist (in full seriousness too) etc. Really now?
I've been a part of mixed race couples for the last 6 years...none in Georgia has ever given me any looks or said anything to me about it. To be honest...the most racism (not towards me) that I've ever seen was in SoCal....it was really blatant too.

I love being a Georgian, South is nice...with its own idiots. I'd say people here are nicer than other places in general.

Never even noticed that in four years! Now I feel better about ignoring those calls asking for donations.

Some of them are just plain asinine. "Legacy Student Scholarship Fund"

Yes, I wish to "donate" money to help some other student who is a legacy, attend. 🙄

Sentinel, I really wish you were taller. I love Indian guys.

I hate most indians. They turn out to be higher-than-thou bigots and/or douchebags. 😀 And you know coug, most of us indians aren't that tall 🙁

I still say expand your mind (and therefore your opportunities 😉 ) a bit

Did you ever think that the policy may be a new one and the result of dating a lot of short guys?🙂
Edit: Also, about the Indian guy thing...I was referring to looks only. Though your description could explain why I've never dated an Indian guy🙂

clearly your policy needs an amendment to allow for awesome shorter guys.

wow, that thread is ridiculous! i've met nice and not-so-nice people in all parts of the country...i can't believe that some people generalize that you can only be a certain way if you are from a certain part of the country!!

I just saw this part. You realize I rarely ever think... right?

Please submit a 500 word essay on "Why CougarMD". Your application will be processed in 6-8 weeks.

Can it be a flow chart? 😀

pft screw it; that's too much work. You remind me of the duke secondary.

Tell me about it. I've left most of my stuff in boxes when I moved back home for a month - to make it easier when I move to philly. But I get the feeling I've still got a ton to pack 🙁

So schools like sent out tuition bills? I thought you just paid for it through loans or whatever at orientation.

I'm pretty sure you do. They're just like obligated to send you a bill so you know you're being charged, and how much.

Oh I see.

Yea I got a bill, and I don't have my loans yet - so it just says "here's the amount we are temporarily crediting to your account - since we know how much you are getting in loans"
