Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone have suggestions for thinning my schools list?
I'd add:

Stanford
CCLM
Columbia
Miami
UTSW
Cornell (in Qatar, hellllo)
Utah
Hopkins
UCLA

I'd cut:

Baylor
Brown
Georgetown
Northwestern
Case
My main concerns right now are places that give out lots of good merit scholarships and that have a generally upbeat vibe amongst the school and surrounding area.
sorry....i have no insight. ignore the list above. 🙁

your stats are awesome 👍

...but it looks like you cut and pasted the us news top 20 haha

Lol, they're schools that I liked out of the top 50 by selectivity. Sat down and read through curriculum and some other stuff for like every single school in the top 55 or so lol.

I'd cut:

Baylor
Brown
Northwestern
Case

JW, why would you cut those 4? I think they actually happen to be in my top 10 of that list lol; two are in the top 5 (baylor and brown).

I'm still feeling a little low about my score 🙁 I feel like it's a huge set back and don't even see much of a point of doing much for my applications. On the bright side, I'm shadowing a PCP soon.

I don't know how low it is, but you still have plenty of time for a re-take. Also, now that you are done with school you should have more time to devote to studying 🙂. If I remember right you are only a junior anyway so even in the worst scenario you will take the MCAT at the end of the summer and apply next cycle (that is what I did last year). Trust me, a gap year is something well worth looking forward to 👍 I honestly need a break, I've been killing myself rocking every class for 4 years, working part time, and doing research.

It is a lot of pressure applying after your junior year so keep your chin up and you will make it through 👍

one of my letter writers keeps pushing me to go for a PhD instead of med school. luckily, i read the letter and he didn't mention that.

it is always awkward when writers bring that up... cuz I don't want to disrespect being a researcher. I usually just say that I plan to do research as an MD and working with patients is a major motivator for me, and where I think I will be happiest.

I'm thinking I like east coast, but I also don't know anything about the east coast. Alternatively, any places that you or friends have had really bad experiences with are useful to know.

Wow top heavy much haha. Anyways schools id cut

1) brown - waste of time to apply largely due to the bs/md program that takes a large number of the spots. Unless its like your number 1, id not waste time.

2) gtown - you said money is important? Gtown is one of the most expensive if not most expensive school in the country and def does not have huge amounts of aid. Once agian why apply unless its a number 1. also have heard many less then great things about this school. While i know you wont say it, people with your stats 95% of the time have their choices of schools from duke, ucsf, hopkins, etc etc...the chances of you taking gtown over any of them is zero and the chances of that being the only school you get into equally small.

3) case - nice school but chances are you will be accepted to a school far more prestigious and generous with aid. Unless you would truthfully attend here over school like duke or emory i would think about cutting if you are looking to. Very expensive school with some aid to give but not an overwhelming amount.

other then that the rest seem decent. Most of those schools ( and top 20) in general have a good amount of aid to give out.

If you had to pick a few to remove just because outside of the 3 above, id say uva, northwestern, or dartmouth maybe. But no other reason then personally i wouldnt want to be in any of those places.

Is Ohio University an actual MD school?

yeah i just say thanks for the encouragement, and yes, a PhD is my back up plan.

haha true for me too... but I bet that stings when they hear that one. I always tip toe around that.

i say thanks but the idea of getting a phd makes me want to vomit...haha😛. none of my writers even said that really. Just said gl and thats that.

haha... a couple of my writers inquired about me pursuing research, I just took it as a compliment since that is what they have devoted their careers to.

I like the suggestion on GTown.. I think I'll def take that out. I was thinking about the crazy BS/MD-ness of Brown, but it still seems like a cool place, in general. I've never been to providence tho. Case seemed like a good deal if I got a merit scholarship (I know several people on SDN have), but not somewhere I'd go if I got a better deal, financially elsewhere. Thanks!!

Ohio State University

Hey, how's everyone tonight? Today marks the start of mcat studying haha! I'm getting to be ok with it, I already have a new retake date, no class so plenty of time to study, and shadowing a PCP soon. I'm feeling I can be more confident this time since I know what to expect and know my weaknesses. Also, I have great news (for myself haha)! Since my boyfriend hurt his shoulder in boot (not good) his graduation date got moved back, I get to see him graduate now!!!!

It is always nice to see your significant other get injured. :meanie:

Note why I put (not good) in my explanation, haha! I was writing that and I knew it wasn't gonna sound right.

I know, just given ya a hard time. Spanish II test is rocking my brain right now. Everything is backas*wards

Awesome email just rolled in. No classes manana! Sweet. Is it lame that the first thing that came to mind was that I had more time for studying? Don't answer that.

Yea I know 😛 It sucks I gotta wait two more months now after he's been gone for two, but I'm really excited about it (still hoping to prove that parris island still looks somewhat like it did in Full Metal Jacket haha!)

That sucks about spanish, I haven't taken spanish since high school!

If lawyers get disbarred, and clergymen defreocked, then do dry cleaners get depressed?

Yea dude, tell me about it. At one of my interviews, the interviewer spent like half the time trying to convince me to do MD/PhD. Now, I REALLY didn't want to disrespect him, so I had to find the most polite way possible to turn him down. :scared:

Good, good! Why couldn't you see your bf graduate before? Build a solid content knowledge-base, then do tons of practice problems, and you should be fine for the MCAT. The keys here are that

1) You don't need to memorize all the details when you're reviewing. Focus on the concepts, let the practice problems sort out which details you're missing.

2) When don't practice problems, truly study the ones you get wrong. I see many people look at the answers and say "oh, so this is why I got it wrong," and stop at that. You need to do more than that. You need to not only understand how to solve that specific problem, but also how to solve that specific TYPE of problem.

Put in the effort and I'm sure you'll be more than fine! 😀

I like to run to de-stress.

That so doesn't work for me, when I'm stressed I just wanna chill. Running gets me all hyped up.

Im not digging M&Ms new pretzel flavor. they remind me of crispy flavor but not nearly as good. I loved crispy flavor. 😍

ugh, the Pens lost. 😡

triple post ftw.

Well runner's high is not as good as well....other highs, but it works.

have you had the coconut ones? a nice treat, but they could never be a go-to candy for me. i rarely eat candy anyway. peanut are probably my favorites. or just plain.

i used to be a chocoholic, thankfully cutting down now and just satisfy my sweet tooth every now and then

my sister makes a mad cheesecake, which is tough to skip

I went to volunteer today and the coordinator told me I have 160 hours. Isn't that on the low side for clinic volunteer??

It's not that bad if you have other strong ECs w/ lots of hours i.e. Research, non-clinical volunteerng, shadowing.

My go to snackish thing is prolly pie, pecan pie, apple pie, and pumpkin pie, hmmmm

i think it matters

why would you say that? how much more of a difference is 160, from 250 or even 300? 300 hours of sitting at a desk at a hospital directing visitors is not as valuable as 160 hours of wheeling patients and being in the ER and stuff

i think both matters, it's like whether gpa matters or mcat matters, the answer would be both. either way, 160 is enough as long as it's not the only thing on her ec list imo.

I have some other ECs, work, internship, retail, waiting to hear back on another job, but the 160 hours is only clinical experience I have...and 40ish hours shadowing

yeah makes sense

i have a question, does it matter what class classification you pick for our classes? i don't know how to classify some of these classes, cuz it can be either natural science or behavioral science cuz it dealt with both

also for the arts, i dont know how to classify some of them

Today I wheeled a 250 lbs woman (more than 2x me), which wasn't too bad except for when we were looking for her car in the garage. Somehow I ended up having to wheel her uphill to get to her car. Ohmygosh, I had no clue how I did it but I did it...the whole time I was so scared of letting go of her because it was so hard. I didn't so much worry about wheelchair going back and running me over or getting fired from volunteering, but she was a really weak person recovering from surgery, I don't think she would have survived a fall like that.

AMCAS has a help button that I used for classification, which was really helpful (yay for astronomy counting under physics, and stats under math, hahaha). I think only one of the classes I was really lost on (epidemiology) so I put it under other. Let the AAMC people work that out
