Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I love Ratatouille, but I respectfully disagree. I am torn between giving that honor to Finding Nemo and The Incredibles (which isn't as good as others, but it's probably my favorite).

Where the hell have you been?!

I will ugly-cry when I see that. I'm CERTAIN. Maybe we'll go this weekend...

Pocahontas II cracks me up. I've never seen it, but I know it ends with her setting sail back to America.

What they leave out is that, in reality, she fell ill and died on that ship. 😱

Haha yes...and they didn't even use the same voices for the characters! It was like watching a sham.

Crab cakes, salad, jasmine rice. Bananas foster for dessert. AND my waiter was smokin'. Happy birthday to me!

Mornin', sunshine.

BANANAS FOSTER MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Happy birfdayyy. 🙂

Every once in a while a girl just needs a little jalapeno pepper in her life, maybe some soul food, and the occasional all-American burger. I'm not eating, just putting the plate in front of me and salivating a little. Watch my friends have a taste. 😉
haha i know i know. i'm all for appreciating different cuisines.

Okay... time to start these secondaries, as Chicklet is napping. Why am I SO scared of these essays? I feel like I'm just going to THINK I'm writing "Why Temple" but I'll actually be typing the lyrics to "Bad Touch" or something. Gah!

I hate these things. I don't even know where to start. D-:

secondaries seem to be the easiest part of the process so far (besides the mcat). just be yourself!

I suspect I was screened out pre-secondary at one of the schools I applied to, although it is not for sure yet...

This results in a dichotomy of emotions. 1) I'm happy they are potentially saving me $100 and not stringing me along 🙂. 2) I'm irritated that they are rejecting me 😡.

Oddly enough, I passed the screen at a far better school... I guess now I understand why people say this process feels so "random."

Haha, a rejection presecondary is kind of like being turned down for a date. Clearly you know that the person isn't interested and you're left feeling unattractive b/c they never got to know you well enough to really judge you. Then you're left wondering which of your features makes you so unattractive

dont sweat it. there are other fish in the sea. they rejected you because they knew you wouldn't go there anyway, and wanted to beat you to the punch.

thanks bro, I like the "It's not me, it is them" approach. 👍

I'm going to focus on emotion #1 I listed above, b/c at this point saving a couple bucks is appreciated. I wish more schools screened me out if they already know that I have zero chance with them.

yeah, but as much as you want to save some money, they want to take your money haha.

stupid secondaries...
Yep... I have a feeling I'll receive another 4-6 next week. Maybe I'll get an interview invite at a place that I think actually read my secondary to make me feel like I'm doing it right. Three to submit this weekend. I dunno how I feel about UVA tho. They had to give away a lot of $$$ to people for their over-enrollment, plus that means less spots for this coming cycle, so it's not looking like a good place for money grubbers like me =P. One of their secondary essays is "what are the most important factors in your deciding on a medical school?"

I wanna write. For primary applications, I screened schools based on location, cost, feel, and most importantly, curriculum.

If I get a choice of more than one of the many schools I feel like I'll be happy at... $$$ money.

Is anyone else applying to BU? I'm not sure what to make of the optional essays. There's something I could write for the educational experience one...but it didn't happen in college so idk how relevant it'll be. Then again if I don't write anything at all, I don't want to risk my app not being strong enough.

Thoughts?

uhh, so if we all wrote what we actually think then we would all write this. I'm going to quote my american lit prof and tell you to "dig deeper." 😀

For your essay at UVA, read up on their NexGen curriculum which appears to be their big selling point. That composed a large part of my essay, as well as how I agreed/fit with their mission statement.

👍 three essays

I'm editing my essay for VCU and later tonight starting on Georgetown. That will put me at ~12 completed secondaries.

Also, I got the e-mail saying UCLA is starting their preliminary review of applicants.

I'm taking three summer school classes, so between that and secondaries I've been crazy busy. However, it is easy to write a seconday essay after writing essays for my literature class (taking it right now in summer school). These include comparing native american origin stories, how Ben Franklin's autobiography is more than "just an autobiography," and whether or not America has realized the Puritan vision as expressed by John Winthrop. See what I mean?

Also, secondaries are almost a welcomed "break" from stats and my aids, science, & society courses too.

It is funny how CA applicants seem to apply to all of the same oos schools, I applied to all of the schools you listed.

+1 on the break from the other stuff. and beyond that, it seems like once u have one of the essays, you can use them for most of the other ones by just tweaking it and adding/removing a paragraph or two. it's just that first one im having trouble with 😛

its like automatic to choose most of those and other oos schools for Ca residents...ohhh weellll, hopefully i don't have to leave ca and establish residency somewhere else to get in haha

add it if you have anything worthwhile to say

For some schools, I wrote an optional essay if I felt like I could highlight something else that worked with their mission/culture/blahblahblah.

For BU, I have no idea what I'm going to do. I'm thinking of modifying my "diversity" essay to go in there. But I don't think necessarily that leaving out the optional essays is going to harm you if your app is strong. Certainly not more than writing something just to fill the space.

I was so excited about the UCLA email today....but it means absolutely nothing.

I calculated the total cost of all my secondaries, and it's coming out to about $2000. 🙁 That's a lot. I'm wondering if I should cut some schools out. But then I start to think...what if THAT's the school that would have accepted me??? Sigh

I'm in the same boat, I'm at ~$2400 (minus whatever schools reject me pre-secondary).

It is tough to know your chances, if I get a bunch of interviews then I know my chances are decent. However, by the time that happens I'll probably have already spent a fortune on secondaries.

I think all of us feel this way. In the Mayo thread there are some kids with their confidence shaken... even those with 3.9+/39+. This process can bruise your ego.

haha...that's why I didn't even bother with Mayo---only 50 matriculants??? lol, I could think of better ways to spend the money. 😛

Hmm, ok. Thanks for your input. 😀

if you're saying you skipped out on kid cudi for an mcat class i'm pretty sure we can never be friends.

I'm realizing that I want to cut schools out that aren't near other schools. Airfare is expensive.

Thanks; that is what I am/was going to do, as well. I just think a lot of this is silliness tbh.

Yeah, it is silliness. It is just another example of "having to play the game."

Sweet, I didn't even know that existed! But yea, airfare is going to be expensive when interview time roles around.

I'm going to try to stick with one airline to rack up some frequent flyer miles. Most likely Southwest.

last year on interviews i used southwest a lot, for those on the west coast def go by them if you can. Jetblue had some amazing deals, were talking like 50 bucks to NYC but you have to catch them on the right time/day. Other then that you are looking at kayak or frequent flyer miles. But honestly, you will be going on like 5-10 interviews max (if you are a normal human). Even if you get 10 interviews + which isnt uncommon persay, chances are at that point you will know which schools to skip and will have a few acceptances🙂. gl

Yea I'm on the west coast and $50 to NYC is CRAZY!! I'm hoping to have my east coast interviews in 1 or 2 big chunks so I can just fly from NYC to Philadelphia to Pittsburgh and not have to come back west every time.

EDIT: I'm getting a little ahead of myself, this is IF I even get those interviews 🙂

Just checked out Southwest. It's buy 8 flights get one free! lol.

Not to mention, we also have to pay for hotels and taxis. 🙁
