Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Lol, I think I first need cable in order to enjoy stuff like that...Even when I move into my new apt, my roommate and I have yet to decide whether we're going to get cable. I'm leaving it up to him to make the final decision--I respect his desires.
LOL

We got rid of cable too. Freakin' expensive. We have viewings with friends or catch up when we visit my parents.

I'm actually considering not getting cable. My girlfriend didn't have cable for two years or so and said that it's really not a problem with Hulu and the network websites. You can watch pretty much everything online. I'll have to wait and see how much it costs, though.

Also, I got my stethoscope yesterday! 😀 I know it's typical super pre-med behavior, but I was pretty stoked.

Which one did you get?

Cable is definitely out from my budget, as I already barely watch TV as it is. I'm thinking of keeping internet out also, though. I figure I have the essentials covered from my smartphone and can just download/store anything else I might need onto my laptop at school and use offline. We'll see...

I don't even have a TV. Internet has really killed the need for one.

Yes, inquiring minds want to know! I'm lost and mostly hoping my boss picks one out and gives it to me at the end of the year. He probably knows what he's buying since we work in cardiac. (This is the gift last year's RAs got and I would dig if he did the same again.)

I got this guy. I really like the all black look.

I guess I actually rarely sit down and watch TV. Most of the time the TV is on it's just making noise on either ESPN or a news channel. But it's on almost constantly, and I'm not sure if I could not have it on while I'm at home, or working, etc..

Thanks, everybody <3

It's 140k cheaper (it's still close to 200k total over 4 years, so that just goes to show how outrageously expensive the school I'm currently enrolled at is) but I have to stay in TN and do my rotations at hospitals so small they look like libraries from the outside. It almost seems not worth it. But I bet I will feel just the opposite while paying that debt off.

sigh.

The mac has had something or another break over 6 times now. I've never dropped it or mistreated it.

140k is a lot of money! Go IS!

We just ditched cable. 3 weeks in and I don't really miss it. We have Xbox live with Netflix and Hulu Plus. I am going to miss Dexter and True Blood, but I would miss the extra $100/month more.

I just got accepted into a IS school. Now I dunno what to do..! Things just got complicated, in a good way I guess

Congrats, man!!!

i really never watch tv except for sports, so i'm definitely cutting out cable for med school. besides, you can get hd terrestrial broadcast for free.

140k is a lot of money! Go IS!

I know : ((( Being financially free earlier will be so much nicer in the end. But I was planning on doing IBR + PSLF, so I wouldve been debt free in 10 years anyways. Argh. Everyone on SDN always says to take the money when the difference is so large, but it seems like no one knows about this! http://www.studentaid.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/students/english/PSF.jsp Is there some sort of catch that I'm not seeing, or do people really just not know about it? Pay 10 years of payments on an income-based repayment plan while working for a non-profit (most hospitals are non-profit) and your loans get forgiven? Seems like no one should care about med school debt anymore, yet everyone seems to be in a panic about it. The fact that they are panicking makes me think there is some sort of catch that I am unaware of, and that maybe I should panic too.

Speaking of which, does anyone remember that awesome old computer game, Lemmings?

And yeah. Sorry to be so off-topic. I'm not paying for cable either since I watch everything for free on the internet anyways. Screw comcast!

I think I'll be joining the no-cable club too. Not sure if we'll get a TV or not. Probably yes at some point, but idk. I think the only thing I'll really miss watching is sports... and maybe the food network. 😳

Yayayay congrats Sun!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck making the decision. (How long do you have to decide anyway?)

Ooh I have to tell you guys, when I was driving to work this morning I saw a bus that said "West Coast PT" on the side! I tried taking a picture of it with my phone but I was too slow. But yeah... West Coast PT.

Just curious...I've read a little bit about this, but not a lot. To find a job with a Public Service Organization, do you pretty much have to be doing primary care? It sounds kind of like it would be a restricting 10 years of practicing medicine, but like I said, I'm not an expert on it.

Sort of reminds me of the Rural Loan Repayment Programs, Family Health Center Programs, or the military programs. Tell me what I'm missing, SC.

Also, I think cable is a must for us. My fiance DVR's way too many shows to not have it.

Nick, nice thread.

http://www.studentaid.ed.gov/students/attachments/siteresources/PSLF_QAs_final_02 12 10.pdf

It doesn't have anything to do with rural medicine or primary care, it only has to do with being employed 1) by the government, including any state university 2) by any non-profit organization, which includes tons of hospitals (you can search http://www.irs.gov/app/pub-78/ to check) or 3) by an employer that provides public health services (also includes hospitals)...it really doesn't seem restrictive at all, unlike the rural medicine or primary care programs. You can be any specialty you want as long as you work at a nonprofit or government-owned hospital...

There must be a catch, right? I guess you'd be unable to go into private practice until your ten years are up, but still...

I'm worried only because everyone else is so worried, so it seems like I must be missing something.

does that mean you're going to have a laptop and a desktop?
I have another laptop that has one. But yeah I also do have a desktop backup.

Haha! That's a new one.

United States of Tara is being cancelled. I has a srs sad. Anyone else watch?
Awwww....I'm sad.

I just got accepted into a IS school. Now I dunno what to do..! Things just got complicated, in a good way I guess
+1. Only...I think I know what to do. But I'm waiting for them to show me the money.

+1. Hulu and HGTV online make online TV watching awesome. and maybe eventually I will pay for my own netflix account. Who needs cable anymore?

I also plan on having dual monitors - if not triple monitors (my laptop screen + 2 monitors). My desktop finally died during a lightening storm outage... and my laptop is crap. So whoever mention Lenovo earlier - I plan on buying a Lenovo once I buy a new laptop. I use one almost daily and I absolutely love it! I wish I had it already; my current laptop loves blue-screening on me randomly.

congrats!

Not gettin cable either. Gonna split HULU plus and streaming Netflix with my friend/roommate.

Bought the Lenovo X220 fully loaded for 875 plus tax. 3.5 pounds + 12 hrs of battery life ftw. Now I dont have to get an apple and feel like a tool.

Word. Cable is a rip-off.

On lenovo: I have an ideapad, I like it. It's not ugly either.

Have a loooong flight ahead of me... Thinking about picking up House of God to read on the plane. Any other suggestions? I figure I should read it eventually, and bonus points because everyone says it's pretty darn good.

Edit: Speaking of reading, my friend starting at Emory next year has summer reading assignments :scared:

Do any other schools do that?

😱 that sucks!

This also reminds me that I only have two more months of "summer," then I start school. I'm sure many of you are starting that soon as well.

Edit: I also realized I have only two months to work off the junk I've been eating since I finished undergrad last December. I have a horrible fear of my white coat not fitting during my white coat ceremony. I guess this is how brides feel about their wedding dress...

Yeah you do 😉

I most certainly do! 🙂

CONGRATULATIONS!!! 🙂

I have to say, I think 140K is worth it, despite IBR+ PSLF. The catch, and someone can correct me if I'm wrong, is that any loan amount that is forgiven is taxed as income on your federal tax return. With a physician's salary, that's going to be approximately 50% taxation, so if you're forgiven 200K, you're left with 100K of taxes to pay to Uncle Sam.

You know, I've never actually heard much about the PSLF thing...shows how much research I've been doing regarding student loans! D'oh! :meanie:

I'll read through the pdf later (thanks for the link, btw) when I have some free time, but do you happen to know off the top of your head if you're still eligible for that with if you're not purely a clinician (ex. if you split your time between research and clinical duties)?

Nope. From the PSLF FAQ: "According to the IRS, student loan amounts forgiven under PSLF are not considered income for tax purposes. (February 3, 2010)"

I've kind of heard of the PSLF, but I had assumed into didn't include med students for some reason - or hospitals. No idea why i thought that. It's great to know that I won't be burdened with 100-300k in loans forever.

Kaushik - I read somewhere on there that you needed to be employed 30 hours a week by a non-profit organization. I assume that includes research too. That's a public service. 🙂
From the FAQ:
Q25 What types of public service jobs will qualify me for loan forgiveness under the PSLF Program?
A25 The specific job that you perform does not matter, as long as you are employed by a public service organization. For example, if you are a full-time employee of a public school system, your employment would meet the requirements for PSLF, regardless of your position (teacher, administrator, support staff, etc.). (February 3, 2010)

Damn so I'm really behind.

Finally found a roommate, but
No place to live
No laptop
No stethoscope
probably a bunch of other stuff I should be getting on asapppp

...can you stream Hulu Plus to your TV?

I think you can with a Roku or Boxee or whatever the hell it is. (One of my friends has it set up on his big-ass TV.)

Anyway, I think I'm right there with you as far as being behind. ****'s not getting done, son.

relevant, albeit old... never gets funny anyway 😎

Flow, I had this (and consequently its parody from Yale, "I Just Got In") stuck in my head all day. Mostly it's just the auto-tune from the refrain reverberating in my head. This is all your fault.

You could also get one of those wires to connect your laptop/computer to the TV.

I don't know if I'll be getting a stethoscope before school starts. I believe there's going to be some sort of sale at school and I won't need it till around October anyways (IIRC). I'm leaning towards the Welch-Allyn Harvey Elite though. 🙂

I have my sights set on the Cards III like Nick and apparently bleaaaarrrgh, but I think it's more just because it's what I'm used to from my volunteer gig.

Unbearable Lightness of Being. Excellent novel composed of philosophy, life, death, love, lust, and infidelity.

I personally thought that House of God was absolute crap. Terrible writing and terribly boring. That's just my opinion though.

If you want to read something medicine-related, I'd recommend "When the air hits the brain" (Frank Vertosick) or "Intern" (Sandeep Jauhar) or "Another day in the frontal lobe," (Katrina Firlik) etc. If you're into cancer, I highly recommend "Emperor of All Maladies" (Siddhartha Mukherjee).

I want to ask you guys for computer advice but no matter how I ask it, it sounds dirty! Sun got me all self conscious now.

I'd like to read House of God eventually too. All the debates surrounding it are making me curious which side I'll take.

Cutting for Stone is excellent 😀

Case assigned The Checklist Manifesto for their summer reading...I decided not to go there, but I read it anyway 😛

I'm also very sad about the cancelling of United States of Tara 🙁

How long a flight are we talking? And what genres are you interested in?

"Would you like something to read?"
"Do you have anything light?"
"Hmm...how about this leaflet, 'Famous Jewish Sports Legends'?"
"Yes. Thank you."

Naw don't feel behind man. I only really have one potential roomate, but she and I want to get a large place with 4 or 5 roommates total, but nothing at all official yet. And I have none of that other stuff you mention. Lots of schools don't recommend the laptop or steth until you actually start, so don't fret! 🙂
