Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You don't say...

Come post in your own class thread, CB!

Also, I accidentally clicked this thread instead of 2016 (I guess because I can't read or something...) and was really confused upon seeing all 2015ers... and CB.

Biochem is honestly one of the silliest classes ever. It requires literally no thinking and is nothing more than memorization of a bunch of mechanisms and proteins. What a waste of time.
They keep asking us to explain "why" things exist, even though it's pretty obvious that these things exist because that's how they evolved. (i.e. they exist because they exist)

I don't wanna memorize the proteins 🙁 <-- Bad attitude since I'm going into anatomy next =X.

I would guess the "why" question is intended to get you thinking what are the advantages of said thing existing.

"Why" is the one word I would use to describe medical school so far.

*random fact*
*why?*
*because of this*
*but...why?
*durrrr*

happy birthday app buddy (aka GlassHalfMD) 😀

also sorry being such a lurks. This thread just doesn't feel like a safe place anymore 🙁

I just don't like the wording. These things are, that is the fact. We don't know WHY HIF-1 proteins have ODD domains, we just know what the ODD domain does and what it affects.

What about other better known things like the angiotensinogen pathway? We might not understand a lot of things about it such as what exactly the fragments, not including Angiotensin II, cleaved off from Angiotensin I do, but the "why" question seems to be a good way of exploring why this pathway is set up the way it is and discovering nuances about it.

"We don't demand solid facts! What we demand is a total absence of solid facts. I demand that I may or may not be Vroomfondel!"

Bane of my existence.

Yeah, you're gonna want to fix that.

Yeah, don't know what's going on in here. I don't even get to check my e-mail more than twice a day now. 🙁

BTW
I've been sick and in capable of studying since Sunday. I feel screwed.
eek.gif

Biochem on tuesday and I have maybe looked at 1/4th of the required material.

But i shadowed a urologist today. Lots of man-parts. It was awesome!! [probably shouldn't have gone though because i got sicker throughout the 4 hours I was there... I was hoping my cold was gone at 7am but alas, it wasn't]

Well, to paper review committees and journal editors, the "why" is pretty damn important. Just had a paper rejected from two different journals because they claim we don't have enough of the "why", even though the most recent journal who rejected us agreed that since we disprove (or at least show that we're both right.. just in different environments) a Nature article from a decade ago that it is "paradigm shifting" (their language.. not ours) and that our model is "more clinically relevant". Oh well.

Whatever, the guys who discovered B-cells are the source for antibodies got their paper published in Poultry Agricultural Science or something after getting rejected everywhere else.

Anyway, I see what you're saying Flow, but for the same reason that my team's paper hasn't gotten picked up yet, and the reason why these professors ask this (and I agree with them), is because it is more than just facts, and if we're only describing the "what" and "who" then it is simply a "just is story", and we're not getting deep enough into why is it exactly this way and not some other alternative.

I find it silly that cholera toxin ADP ribosylation of G_alpha_s and pertussis toxin ADP ribosylation of G_alpha_i lead to the same increase in cAMP. But it's a DRY whooping cough, and a WET diarrhea. The more you ask the more you realize that Wikipedia has the why and your professors have the what, and that the why isn't tested...

When you have 20 facts to memorize per day, randomly wondering about 2 why's everyday leads to a lot of wasted time and effort ^_^

Happy belated birthday, GlassHalf!!!

And yeah... I've been lurking more, too.

Btw, MARRIED! Yay!
Woot woot! Congrats!

I'm full term today. Gulp.

eek thanks!! I just saw this! 👍 you're the best app buddy ever! I tell people at my school that I know you and they ask how and I don't have an answer for them (SDN gets no mention from me) - hahahaha.

Happy belated birthday, GlassHalf!!!

Thanks, GC! and... I'm totally guilty of lurking, too. on the fbook group also.

I literally think I have developed both ADD and a facebook addiction since starting school... it's an issue. I have a quiz on the neck in 20 mins, and I am clearly not studying. let's hope I can BS the contents of the various triangles! 👍

hahaha. i can image: "oh, you know, we known each other for forever *awkward looking around*"

i wish i only had a fb addiction. i love my netflix and hulu too much. I can't let go.....

omg so true. me too. it's really getting out of control for me.

also, happy birthday and good luck! :luck: 👍 😍

Thanks! and yes, big issue. I really need to do better than mediocre slash barely passing (a self esteem boost would be lovely, in the form of a better grade on my next anatomy exam...). unfortunately, doing better probably involves getting my buns off social networking sites. and figuring out how to focus. GOOD LUCK to you, too (everyone, really)!! :luck:

Whee! Geekbabby come soon!

Happy birthday Glasshalf!

Congrats on getting hitched, Court!

Despite the pernicious invasion of our thread, it seems that lots of happy stuff is going on 🙂

Hooray for GC and Court!!!!! - you're so right, Daisy (and thanks for the bday wishes), there is a lot of good going on around here even if the general mood has taken a bit of a downward turn. 👍

hahaha. i can image: "oh, you know, we known each other for forever *awkward looking around*"

bahahaha, that's pretty much exactly what it looks like...

I thought the standard answer was "we met on the interview trail," no?
that's for me and you and everyone else on sdn.

GlassHalf though, she is in a league of awesomeness all on her own and deserves therefore an equally awesome answer. That and the people she is meeting actually know me, and therefore, they would be curious about where on the interview trial we actually meet... which is unfortunately no where. 🙁

hahaha if this were on facebook I would be liking it right now. instead, it gets an 'ol SDN thumbs up 👍

and yea, they know I'm not smart enough to interview at most of the places you did 😛 hahaha I think they've forgotten about our mysterious friendship by now though - the coast is clear! let's face it, we're all now consumed with trying to memorize the human body, no time to discuss mutual friends!

Two things:

All of pitbull's songs are the same; obnoxious.

Embarassingly, I kinda... think this song is catchy <_< Med school must be makin' me crazy.

Also, bump.

Heart anatomy is lame. 🙁
I was actually kind of surprised at the way it looked inside. Not what I expected.

We're now starting the head and neck in our anatomy class. It's our last part of the body, so we're almost done! I think we only have 8 more days doing dissection. It hasn't been bad but I'm REALLY looking forward to being done with the dissection and all.

Pretty jelly. We're starting head and neck at the end of week next week.

...except we still have anatomy until mid October. 🙁

wait baby wait.

So I am finally over my 5-day intense cold AND i got to shadow a urologist during a bladder removal 8-hour surgery [hence, I missed school yesterday] so i literally have studied zilch for my biochem exam on Tuesday. Amazingly, he gave us a study guide question list... and that is pretty much all you need to know. It's like a procrastinator bible.

The course director (who has been teaching at the school for 50 years) assured me it wouldn't be a problem and we would figure something out, but it'll undoubtedly be a PITA. It would be MUCH easier if the kid just stays put until afterwards. Considering Chicklet surely would have come after her due date had I not been induced, I'm hopeful. :scared:

Eek! At least if babby comes right after your final, you won't have to study much in the first few weeks post-delivery.

Top again!
