I'm too paranoid and my app is too unique to remain anonymous... besides I play too much on here.

picked out some schools i would like to go to
but not sure about safties/reaches yet without my score...will post on my mdapps and hopefully can get some good responses from you guys/others
lol seriously what a bummer :/ hahaha
i really don't want to go far from home, and AZ doesnt really take oos either, do you know of any other good schools nearby that take oos?
Nevada is tricky because they suck for OOS but they also suck for IS. Hahaha... What I mean by that is they like to take students who left NV for college who maintain their residency (parents) in NV. This is somewhat logical, because I believe those students have higher stats on average (people who succeeded in HS), but also screws over folks who were hoping for some IS love (my friends). Hahaha.Hopefully we both get to stay in CA, but OHSU takes some oos and is on the west coast (Portland). It is probably my top choice out of state. Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and Washington are all busts for oos. UIC takes a lot of CA applicants every year. Other oos friendly schools that don't get overwhelmed with apps (a la Drexel, BU, GWU, Gerorgetown) I'm applying at are MCW, Creighton, Albert Einstein, Tulane, Miami, the Ohio state, and Vermont (take a lot of CA applicants). This was off the top of my head there are a lot more. For some reason I'm also interested in applying at Iowa. Wake Forest and Penn St. too.
That sucks about the biochem requirement. In general med schools make this whole process suck by the wide variety of reqs they require for classes & LOR. It is almost impossible to meet the requirements for every school. Some consistency would be nice.Nevada is tricky because they suck for OOS but they also suck for IS. Hahaha... I hate the new push to require Biochem. It's like "hey, we'll tell you that you can be whatever major you want, but you actually need to be a biochem major. it's the new unwritten requirement, just like mandatory volunteering." Of course, I exaggerate... a little. In order to take a "Real" biochem class at my university, I'd have to spend 2 or 3 extra semesters in the biochem taking their, get this, STUDY SKILLS courses. Yeah. Even then, biochem conflicts with like everyone but biochem's schedule.
One of my LOR writers hasn't responded to my email (and I know he's online lol).
//randy mc ranty face//
PS is very long ATM. Kinda need readers.
In other news, I get to enjoy the awkwardness of going to a church that I've never been to before, tomorrow. I don't know how many of ya'll have had the opportunity, but it's a great way to feel like it's freshman year of high school again, if you're feeling nostalgic for that sort of thing =P
Anyone notice that AMCAS is starting to get behind on transcripts? "Currently entering transcripts received on 5.20.10"
Are you in Sac/Davis right now? =)That sucks about the biochem requirement. In general med schools make this whole process suck by the wide variety of reqs they require for classes & LOR. It is almost impossible to meet the requirements for every school. Some consistency would be nice.
Luckily I majored in Human Biology and have taken metabolic biochem (didn't take structural biochem). I also have taken immunology, genetics, molecular biology, and a bunch of other stuff that pops up as recommended courses. This summer I have to take statistics though... even though I've already done college & matrix algebra and a year of calculus, so lame!
I've also noticed that AMCAS is getting backed up. They also seem to get backed up at the beginning of the week and then catch up a little more by the end of the week. It probably is partially due to them getting trancripts/LOR over the weekend.
Nevada would be cool b/c it is within driving distance of where I am now... but I think they only take ~15 people oos.
Are you in Sac/Davis right now? =)
All OOS from Nevada are WICHE states. Bummerooski =(
UIC is AWFUL for OOS lol. Id recommend no OOS apply there. Go look a their tuition, especially the raises in it each year. You will be easily 300-400k in debt there if you get all loans. If that was the only school you got into id almost say its better to reapply. They have the highest OOS tuition in the country. AECOM is kinda meh too. I guess some like it but after interviewing there, id say its a school i would never ever want to attend and would rather reapply too.Hopefully we both get to stay in CA, but OHSU takes some oos and is on the west coast (Portland). Good Job 👍
I showed my PS to several people in the beginning then as I started to revise I only showed it to a few people. Everyone has their own take on things and a different direction they think you should take. Seems like there are a million ways to do a PS resulting in a big headache.
During college my older brother abandoned his dog with my pops (he still has it after 9 years). So if I (the middle child) ever needed help with a dog I know there is no chance my dad would help... another example of the middle child getting squeezed again.
I really like labs (especially chocolate labs) and I'd like to get a Shiba Inu. For the Shiba Inu I'm not sure if I would go black/tan or the one that looks like a fox.

I absolutely see your point. It's just that if these were the only schools that took me I'd probably go. If I had to reapply the only thing I could do to help myself is retake the mcat. My GPA can't get much better, I had thousands of hours of clinical experience, and a lot of volunteering and research. They've kinda got me by the...UIC is AWFUL for OOS lol. so cute! if it were me, i'd pick the first one cause the colors remind me of a german shepherd lol
and yah, the PS is definitely a headache...after my advisor reads it, i'll have a couple other people read...make a few edits, and i'm good.
Baller, did you forget USC or just not want to go there?
👍 USCHa sorry, i forgot to add it i will apply there.
is UIC u of Illinois?
i have almost all those schools you mentioned on my prelim list, but i really don't know if i would go to vermont, lol. Weather does matter to me somewhat you know lol
I have a question for you guys. Did you talk about your classwork in your PS? I went to the writing center and the girl told me to include it, but then she's an English major planning on teaching so doesn't know about med applications. She just said that as an adcom, she'd be bothered if I didn't discuss my classes and major. I loved my major and would talk people to death if I could but I'm only given 5,300 characters and I feel it takes up precious room. All the sample PS I read, no one talked about their classes--I'm guessing because ~70% of classes premeds take are the same.
👍 USC
Yeah, UIC is university of illinois.
Haha --> vermont, but they have a good clinical rep, skiing/snowboarding all around, and burlington is supposed to be a very nice upscale college town, but the weather...
I never realized how much of the country gets frickin' cold
Edit: SLU takes a lot of oos too
Your stats seem good, so CA is definitely a strong possibility. It is good to be prepared though and have some oos options b/c CA can be unpredictable. I'm about to go out for a bit and I'll check out your update when I get back (if your done).yeah, im trying to stay as close to the west coast as possible, but it seems like a failed attempt bc all of these nearby states aren't oos friendly. I might pick one or two and give it a shot
im going to update my list in a few hours (after i do some work for school), check it out rhino
do you have an mdapps? or a list of schools you're going to apply to?
I don't know how many people paid for the US news info on the medical schools, but there is one big piece of info on there that is missing from the MSAR.
MSAR gives you oos data:
Applicants
Interviewed
Matriculated
US News gives you oos data:
Applicants
Interviewed
Accepted
Matriculated
Some schools seem to accept a higher percentage of their interviewed candidates than others.
that "accepted" number is such a big deal. who cares how many matriculated, as long as you got in thats all that matters

Is the US News info worth it? I have access to MSAR info on an excel spreadsheet.
I thought it was worth the $14 I paid. Like I said the most useful info is that it gives you the # of accepted students. For example, the MSAR tells you that u of miami received 3282 oos apps, interviewed 166, and 51 matriculated.... u.s. news also tells you that 114 were accepted oos. This tells me that 2x the number that matriculated were accepted and that almost everyone interviewed was accepted from oos. Useful? I think so.
It also tells you things like how many PI's they have, what they look for in an applicant (very briefly), & what residencies they offer. Along with the info in the MSAR and the schools website I plan to use this kind of info when writing secondary essays specific to the school.
I spend more than $14 on coffee and lunch most days 😀
Useful? I think so.
The acceptance #'s seem worth the price. But its usually pretty easy to discern which schools take OOS and which dont from sdn and the msar.
wish i had that in some ways last year when i applied. But its usually pretty easy to discern which schools take OOS and which dont from sdn and the msar.
defiantly worth the price🙂. Have you finalized your list yet? Im kinda curious to see how your cycle ends up going. On paper i imagine for the most part we are the same applicant, and likely you will write about the same things i did on the secondaries since the questions are always like whats a struggle youve had/how can you add diversity. If you end up how i did it would be kinda funny or at least confirm to me some things about certain schools. Hope you are applying to OHSU in addition to UW mad and others🙂Yes this is true 👍
but since I'm spending thousands of dollars to apply $14 is a pretty small "convenience charge" to have all the info gathered in one place. If it prevents me from applying to 1 wrong school then it pays for itself.

one of my regrets from this cycle was that I turned down my interview invite to OHSU. I love that school and my PI did residency there and just raves about it. I couldnt afford ot interview there though since i knew i had options that would save me near 100k+ in debt compared to OHSU (which is wildly wildly expensive for OOS and has no aid really🙁 )
This is the list I'm currently working with:
UCSD
UCLA
UCI
UCD
USC
UCSF
AECOM
Creighton
Drexel
EVMS
Georgetown
Indiana Univ.
Jefferson
Mayo (what the heck no secondary essays)
MCW
OHSU
Penn St.
SLU
OSU
Miami
Toledo
Vermont
Tulane
Univ. of Wisconsin
Iowa
VCU
Wake Forest
Stuggle/obstacles/diversity essays shouldn't be too hard for me. I already know what topics I'll cover in thoseProbably the same stuff you did.
OHSU is probably the school I have the most interest in oos based on reputation for developing clinicians, amount of research, avg age of matriculating students is 26, and Portland is a city with a lot to offer. I completely understand why you would withdraw since you got in instate. It is hard to justify the expense of going oos when all of the CA schools have such a great rep and they are relatively cheap for instate residents.
I remember after I transferred from the cc to UC my pre-med advisor told me I should take a gap year b/c some schools like to see 2 full years of course work at the UC. Then this past summer I was talking to another pre-med counselor and he told me I should have applied last year and he wished I had talked to him before I decided to wait a year. Pre-med advisors suck haha.
This is the list I'm currently working with:

What's up, guys?! I can't believe it took me so long to find this group!
Nice to see some familiar faces here already. Go 2015! 👍
I want to make sure I get in this year and my list is already long which is why I don't have more "top schools." I figure CA schools exceed my reaches limitseems like a good list, some of them are meh but you gotta apply just in case. Im kidna surprised at the lack of top schools but its probably for the best i guess. I just thought what if...granted none of the top ones i applied to wasted their time on me (except ucla) but w/e
and pre med advisors🙄🙄🙄. Mine told me that i was wasting my time applying and should do an masters/smp + retake mcat. Glad i followed his "wonderful" advice.... In the end the only people who really know your chances wont tell you (admin committee) before you apply so you might as well go with what you got and then see.
Which 6? Maybe we will end up going to school together 🙂I'm applying to about six of the schools on your list. I kind of want to try Indiana but they take so few OOS, and you have to have some connection to Indiana or something is what I've heard.
stupid lakers....
