:laugh: I'll probably be dreaming of days like this when I'm freezing my azz off in the snow somewhere.

I'm taking 4 classes over the summer: 1 bio class to graduate, 1 poly sci class so I get summer financial aid (minimum is 2 classes)... then I'm taking 2 classes at the cc: statistics and intro to literature. I need the last 2 so I meet the requirements for some of the med schools I want to apply to. The stats class sucks b/c I have already done 1.5 years of math, including a year of calc.

I am loading up in the summer so I don't have to take any classes in the spring 👍
 
quick question guys. an mcat date finally opened up near me but its for july 8th. do you think i should snag it? im worried that 1 month isnt enough to retake the 8 aamcs and restudy but i still want to make sure i retake it soon if i dont do well. i think the last ok date would have been july 16th, but its not open
 
im really trippin out here lol i dont want to lose it but if i did really bad then 1 month isnt enough time to study

Yeah, but if you take much later then you should probably apply next year. You could probably raise your score 2-3 points in a month. You will mostly be taking practice tests and reviewing what you missed.

You rocked it the first time though :luck:

Tomorrow I get to call one of the colleges I attended and verbally rip the registrar's office a new orifice. I'm tired of this tomfoolery.

If that is the only date then I would... seems like the latest you want your app to be complete is August. Can you cancel and get a full refund if your 1st score comes back awesome?

I think if you really work then a month of studying can improve your score several points.

i can get 1/2 of it back which is fine. its not only about the money its about picking the right date and if its even enough or if its worth it

I have been trying to get my transcript from them for more than 2 months. This will be my 4th request, and my third phone call. They have this idiotic system where you can't get an unofficial transcript unless you have a current log-in, which I don't have, so I have to get an official.

First time I called to ask what happened with my first request after more than a month, they told me they sent it to my alma mater, even though I told them to send it to my home address. He said he'd send it and to call if I didn't get it in a week. I gave them two weeks. I called again to ask WTF was up, then apologized, then read back my MOTHER'S address to me, even though I gave them my home address last time I called. Jesus tap-dancing Christ! Then I faxed them all my information AGAIN with a request for my transcript and my current home address. I also checked with my mom to make sure she didn't get it... she didn't. That was a week ago.

I'm feeling really stabby over this happy horse**** right now. It is the only school that has given me any trouble with this. I need the damn transcript to enter my grades into AMCAS. Then I get to have them send another right to AAMC. YAY!

Lemme tell ya, if I was still planning on applying to schools beyond the ones in Philly, this one would have been on my list. After this d-baggery, I'd be cutting it.
 
I just noticed this thread because Ive been stuck in the MCAT discussions!

A few questions:
1)How did you pick your schools? I know I'm going to apply at Mayo Medical School (super reach) and a few around the area but don't know how to go about picking the others.
2)I see many people do more than 100+ hours shadowing-->what do they do that whole time? I have like 32 hours and that is because I shadowed different specialties...should I be doing more? I am planning on submitting AMCAS early July...

3)I am signed up for the July 17 MCAT and am wondering if I should perhaps change it to the July 8 MCAT will one week really make a difference in giving me a better chance? I am planning on submitting without score, that way I can work on some secondaries if they are automatic...

4)Anyone else have a family/married? I am married and have a 1 year old girl and would like to find out about family friendly schools.

5) What program are you using for your LOR? Just AMCAS? What about if they dont have it for a certain school?

Wow... that would stress me the F--- out! I'd drive out there and threaten to put a foot in someones azz if they didn't get it together :meanie:

Did they send it to AMCAS at least? probably not...
 
Hi there!

1. My husband just got a new job, so I'm only applying to the schools in Philadelphia. If you haven't picked up an MSAR, you may want to order a copy, or if you look around here on SDN, you can find a spreadsheet with all the same statistics.

2. I think that amount of shadowing is just fine, and 100 is pretty excessive, IMO.

3. If you are able to switch to July 8th and think you'll be prepared, I'd do it. If that's the case, it can only help.

4. I'm married and I have a daughter that's 17 months old. I believe there is at least one other parent that posts regularly in this thread as well.

5. Most schools use AMCAS, and somewhere there's a list of those that don't, but I'm not sure exactly where it is (aamc.org somewhere). I am using Interfolio.

This was probably a mistake, given how long it's taken, but I haven't requested they send it to AMCAS yet, because they wouldn't have had anything to verify since I haven't been able to enter grades into the system for that school.

And dude, I would LOVE to drive over there and cutabitch, but I'm not feeling like making the 2+ hour drive to Manhattan and finding somewhere to park. 😀

Hi :hello:

1) Use the MSAR to find oos friendly schools with similar avg #'s. Include some reaches, safeties, and range choices.

2) Volunteering is generally considered an unwritten requirement. It could be doing anything: human society, coaching (that's what I did), hospital volunteering, or any other type of community service work is good. Sorry, shadowing doesn't count as volunteer work.

3) I'm not sure if you can receive secondaries without an MCAT... even if you can it is kinda risky. Generally applying earlier is better, but getting a good score is the most important thing.

4) I have an 8 yo son, but I'm not married... I would like to know the answer to your question too.

5) I'm using interfolio which is about you only option besides virtualEvals. Interfolio has worked great for me.

🤣 love how that is one word! It belongs in the dictionary haha. There should be a service that will go out and b!tch slap idiots/incompetent people for you in every city.

Definitely send it they won't verify anything until you submit. However it takes them a while to associate the transcript with your application. It will speed things up if you send it now.

That's what I'm going to do. Two of the four schools I need to submit transcripts for are a hop, skip, and/or jump from my work and/or home, and I only have a half day at work tomorrow. Those ones I will just drop off in person. The other two I will just mail.
 
jesus. i hate aamc.

i picked the location i want and it said no test sites available! WTF. but its on the page as one of the listed locations available.

there goes all that stress for nothing

I still need to finish mine up tonight or tomorrow. Shadowing another doc tomorrow, so I'll def get to yours tomorrow afternoon and hopefully get mine out then, too!

It hasn't been that long, and it definitely hasn't been for the same reason. I spent a solid two hours reading the PI's articles he sent me earlier and I was taking SDN breaks, but no one was around.

That sounds interesting. Is it a psychology lab?

btw If I was going to get a PhD I would definitely try to get into this lab at the Scripps Research institute that is investigating addiction.
 
hes a psychologist in the school of nursing. a pretty good mix of worlds.

the articles i've read so far suggest that the research doesnt matter. people with older lung age than chronological age, as well as, people with more respiratory side affects disregard the study more than other smokers who aren't as bad off.

So the people who need to quit the most care the least? That sucks. This kind of behavior is why addiction research is so interesting to me. I had a class with Dr. George Koob on addiction. He's one of the leading researchers in the world on addiction. His theory is essentially that once you become addicted you're internal regulation adjusts. Then when your off the drug you have all of these negative reward systems that are over active.

well, kobe raped as usual 38 points, 8 rebounds, 10 assists not to mention 6/8 or 6/9 from 3

and the next closest scorer was gasol with 15

and odom and artest went 1/12 from 3 which screwed up the game becaue they doubled kobe in the 4th but no1 could hit shots and phil was too stupid to bring in shooters so they LOST. theres more to it but just watch the highlights of the 4th and you'll know what i mean there was absolutely no defense either. gasol , bynum and odom were playing like they were asleep and no1 did a good job rotating and the suns just had a field day


well hopefully phil makes some changes (like bringinig in sasha)....thursday is game 5
 
pretty much. the articles were talking about all of these justifications that smokers have for why they smoke and why it's not effecting them like it does other people etc. the people that didnt have such negative results on the tests were more likely to want to quit smoking. silly smokers.
 
anyways, i gotta get up at 6am for the shadowing, and i hate waking up in 6.5 hours so PEAAAACE
