Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
To everyone considering OHSU: it's currently pouring rain/sleeting and 50 degrees. Make a substantial investment in rainwear.

Another random question that I am afraid to ask outside of this thread: for those of you who applied to Kaplan to teach, did you all take Kaplan? Also, did you follow up with the online app, or did they contact you?

AMCAS has received a copy of all required transcripts and has placed the application in line to be reviewed by an AMCAS verifier.

Also, my composite letter got uploaded to Interfolio. Now to upload them all to AMCAS and AACOMAS.

Let's DO this schit!

Awesome!

Congrats 🙂

I bet that is a huge relief.

Sweet......even more reasons to drop all of my money at REI🙂

I heard (on SDN) that OHSU is notoriously slow with applications, do you know anything about that? It is in my top 5 for sure.

I am taking a break from math. Done 4 hours of problems so far.....probably going to do another 4 this afternoon. You all need to perk this thread up again so that my break is worth it😉
its very slow. And only about 10% or so of the people are accepted right away. Many are put on the hold list and later decided on whether or not you are wl, accepted, or w/e. last year their 2ndary came out on 9/14 (95% of schools will have 2ndaries out by july), and i got an interview invite in december, i think the 1st interview invites were in nov. By nov many schools have already interviewed many people, close to 1/2 of what they interview. Then beyond that like i said most people are put on hold making the wait longer. Last year was the 1st time they changed to an electronic 2ndary so they did say that messed things up. It should be faster this year but not by much 😛

Thanks E; that is actually really good to know.

Am I weirdo in thinking that because they are slow, that means I have many more months of hope than I might have originally?😉

They haven't changed my name yet.....so sad🙁

I took the Kaplan class. After filling out the online app, I was emailed within a few days. Are you planning to apply?

had to turn off the game it was just painful to see. Its over but hopefully they can do something in game 7. Though if perkins is out its over barring some miraculous performance like ray did before.

this game is beautiful. the lakers actually showed up.

Interesting thing I found out the other day.. I was talking to my new dentist and he said that he was on the admissions committee for dental school once upon a time. They would take the first 900 applicants and screen them for all of the initial interviews and then after all those interviews were over, they'd move on to the other several thousand applicants and the people who didn't get an interview in the first 900. Makes me wonder if some MD schools are that way. Good to apply early!

that is a good thing to hear for us early applications.

i wish the lakers kept ariza instead of getting artest.

how much do you think those court side floor seats are worth?

oh. and i hate the government.

thats all.

we need police, but the things that are policed and what is processed in the legal system needs some adjustment.

That is my problem. The police are neither required to protect nor serve. I don't feel like they do most of the time, either. The punishments are also unjust. (the "war on drugs" comes to the forefront of my mind). But I'm letting my libertarian show and I'm not sure if med schools are very fond of my type.
=P

SDN is a small % of pre-medical students. While the popular belief here is that you are late if you complete in early August, this is actually the norm. At most schools it will make little to no difference between completing in July or early/mid August.

Interviews/having something unique to offer/personality/character/PS, all matter much more than ~30 days of app turn in time.

I believe the idea originated with people believing numbers are everything, then they see people with lower #'s getting accepted while they are rejected (after not completing "early"). Of course this select group will be a loud bunch and will be willing to tell their story repeatedly, while those who gain acceptance are off studying (not posting on these forums, hence rarely heard from).

A ~3.6 GPA and ~33 on the MCAT garners an 83% acceptance rate (according to the last 3 year aggregate of data). This is regardless of time turned in. So if you completed in September with these #'s you still have an 80% chance. Early is good but it won't significantly change your chances (my guess? ~5% max affect; negligible). Truth is, it's everyone best guess as each adcom is different. There is no data that strongly supports either opinion.

You are probably correct with the first point (how other things are more important than timeliness).
The second point however is most likely incorrect. Maybe you just used the wrong word but 83% is not regardless of time turned in. It's an overall number. Second, the statistics are probably skewed to people handing it in earlier, so even if earlier apps have say 85% chance late apps can have something like a 70% chance. Besides I've heard the "hand it in early" spiel from plenty of people who've never even heard of SDN. In fact, some schools' websites even implicitly refer to this. Additionally, as FlowRate mentioned some schools re-review apps as the season progresses (Emory explicitly claims to do this, as do some other schools).
Still I don't think early August is late for most schools. September definitely is though.

how broadly and early are you applying?

i'd apply right away, but that's just me (and probably what i will end up doing next year). sorry about your luck. 🙁

edit: wrong thread. again. and im too lazy too move it.

nothing to see here...

:laugh::laugh:Hahahaha, ok🙂

To answer your question anyway, this is the first time I'm applying, I'm already verified in AMCAS, I am applying rather conservatively (20 schools) because I don't mind waiting another year, and I plan to apply again next year if it doesn't happen.

And thank goodness you don't know something about my bad luck that I don't know😉

good use of a qualifier.👍

I obviously don't agree though.

This is conjecture. There is no data to support this. For all we know the #'s could be the same across the board, or skewed towards the late applicants (I realize this is unlikely though).

To say you chances went down 15% would be guessing as much as my guess.

Besides I've heard the "hand it in early" spiel from plenty of people who've never even heard of SDN. In fact, some schools' websites even implicitly refer to this. I agree with you mostly here. I think the point I was making is that people want to complete in July and tell people, "you're late! you're late!" if this isn't done. August is timely for most of the schools in America. I do realize the "hand it in early" spiel is prevalent, however, how often do you hear a date followed by this spiel? Rarely. I believe when schools say this in general terms, they are talking about completing in early-mid August time frame.

The only reason I bring this up is that I had to research this quite a bit, as I will complete in this early-mid August time frame. But I can't tell you how many times I see misinformation, "oh man, you weren't complete in July? You're finished." I rarely post about it, I must be bored of MCAT passages right now.

so you're not applying this year?
I am

That post was meant in response to a post that J4 linked me to...

I meant to say that if I dont get in this year, which I probably wont, I would reapply the following year, and as early as possible.

sorry for the confusion. I should delete the post and put it in its right thread. Im simply to lazy. my toe hurts and my mouth is on fire from red hots.

in other news, i got some new live rock, two coral frags, and a crab.

oh. and the government wants us to have electronic name tags that come equipped with out biometric information and gps tracking. sweet. track me all the way home or leave the tag at work where someone can use it to access ****.

did I mention I HATE the government? I do.
