Class of 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My life has been awesome lately.

1) Got the highest score in the class on my orgo II final
2) Nailed a super hilly 20 mile run the next morning
3) Actually relaxed for a change
4) Found out I pulled off an A in orgo lab (where only 10% of 20 ppl get an A)
5) Took second place in a wing eating competition with 40 jumbo wings (the winner had 41)
6) Met some of the most important people in my school's Urology department and found a surgeon to shadow; also found another physician to shadow today

I'm sure reality will hit soon and life will return to being sucky, but I'm enjoying the good stuff at the moment! 😀

damn it... 33. My score is dropping =(
I'd take a 33. 🙂

Yeah, it's not bad, but it's kind of frustrating when your parents are like "Oh you should get X score easily since you've already gotten higher before," and when I get a little lower, they just go "What did you do wrong? Why can't you do verbal correctly when you were born in America?" It's all jokes and good fun, but at the back of my mind, I do get a bit annoyed by it. And I feel like they're right to an extent that I should be able to do better.

I wish my parents cared/understood any of this, it would actually give me some more motivation....

I had a really awesome 2 hour talk with my dad last night about different specialties and about the different midlevel positions... it was amazing. I'm definitely passionate about medicine, but my dad's a close second, haha! My mom, on the other hand, hits the yawn button whenever words even remotely science-y come out of my mouth, turns around, tilts her head, and says "now how about you ACTUALLY go and study for your MCAT?"

Touche, Mom, touche.

🙁

Haha, it would be nice to have a meaningful conversation with my parents once in awhile. Were you explaining to your dad or was he explaining to you? 😱

Hahaha they aren't really being condescending about it, but I do feel like I should score better because I know the english language. ANyways, I'm gonna take a shower and run through some practice problems. Maybe that will fix my bio score.

If it makes you feel any better, I love your avatar! 🙂

Verbal is hard for everyone, I think. 🙂

Yeah, seriously...The people that are usually very good at verbal are also very good at the sciences, too. Tend to be people that read a lot and as a result have developed super-saiyan critical reading skills 😛

You got this... good luck!

It was mostly me explaining to him, but he's a P.A. so he told me all about his experience with his P.A. rotations. It was super cool.

Verbal's definitely hard for everyone. I think it's extremely difficult for non-native speakers, and very difficult for native speakers. I think I'm pretty lucky with my parents: I've explained to them in detail what the MCAT is, and it seems like they pretty much get it. They're not native English speakers, so they pretty much freak out whenever I talk about Verbal lol. Blahhhhh MCAT just sucks for everyone >.< Except geniuses.

i do too! I swear I was going to say that first lol 🙂

I keep looking at it.

Yep. Those people suck balls.

Haha, so true. It's nice that your dad is a PA. He should be able to use his connections to get you to shadow doctors 😛 I've explained to my parents about the MCAT, but they just think it's just another test, lol. Just another test that determines my future 🙄 English isn't my first language, so I try to explain to them in my native language, but it's hard sometimes.

And that's putting it very, very nicely.

Also, congrats Mohad! A 33 is an awesome score, I can only hope for that for tomorrow's practice test.

Also, CONGRATS Tman on breaking 30!!!! That's awesomeness!

Bahahaha PA's unfortunately don't get too many connections 😛 But I've learned a lot from him, and I did work with an MD colleague of his, so he has a lot of cool insight into the medical profession. I'm continually impressed by my parents: they immigrated with nothing, yet became professionals like PA's and gave me a good childhood 😀 Ahhh yeah, they've been here for a while so I explain academic stuff to them in English, English isn't technically my native language but I'm more fluent in English than my "native language" just due to living here and speaking it more.

Woot for immigrant families!! What language do you speak, tman?

my parents think im taking the wrong classes such as taking chem, bio, physics. Have an argument every time and i have to go look it up so many times in order to show them that i need these courses NOT for my degree BUT for med school. They're tight on money and want to save as much as they can but they constantly think im wasting my time taking extra science classes.....They'll never understand.

I'm not looking forward to application time....they'll prob make me only apply to all Texas school and thats it...but they don't understand how competitive its getting.

theres a lot more...but whatever.

Yeah, I came to america when I was around 6-7. My parents had nothing either. Those were the days we had to sleep on the floor without even a blanket in the harsh winter months. I'm still poor 😛 but to think that we've made it this far from nothing just amazes me and inspires me to work as hard as I can! My parents have always tried to give me and my sister everything we've wanted even when we didn't really have the money. Getting a little too in detail here  My native language is Bengali.

That sucks...It can't be helped when your parents aren't the most informed people in the world. Like I always have to explain to my family/relatives that I have to go to college and then apply to med school, etc. Whenever I tell my parents I'm taking a certain class they always ask why not knowing it's required =/ They'll understand once you're a big shot ortho surgeon

Oh wow, my sister had a similar experience to you (she came to the US when she was 9), but I was actually born shortly after my parents got here, so I've never been back to Russia (we speak Russian). My dad managed to scrape up enough money to go to PA school, so I've never been poor per se, but until second grade I pretty much went to the most ghetto elementary school you could imagine, hahaha 😛 Can't say the 'burbs were better, though

Haha, ghetto elementary school. I was in ghetto elementary school, too. I got lucky in middle school and high school. Do you want to visit Russia?

Woop woop! 38 on AAMC 8 (13/13/12)!

New record for verbal too! TPRH and EK101 lie about your verbal scores I've been scoring far better on practice tests than I did in any practice passages before I started taking FLs. If any of you aren't scoring where you want in EK101 or TPRH just keep pushing through and stay diligent! It will pay off!! :xf::xf:

Hahaha, yessss. It could be the new Daddy Daycare sequel or something. Daddy Daycare 3: Ghetto Elementary. Yeah I went to a suburban middle/high school, but I actually reaaaally disliked both of them. My parents aren't exactly suburban (lol) and neither was I, so it didn't go too well. Thankfully college is the shiz.

No, actually, I've got some personal beef with Russia, but I did recently visit Brighton Beach, which was a huge trip down memory lane for me. All of the food, shops, people were like a storybook out of my childhood, it was crazy. I think I was raised more in the Brighton Beach vein than in the Russia vein, especially since my parents left before the Soviet Union collapsed. Post-USSR Russia is a pretty foreign place to us now.

And, this might sound totally cliched, but have you read The Namesake/Interpreter of Maladies/anything by Jhumpa Lahiri???? The Namesake is definitely my favorite book of all time, and it's about Bengali-Americans.

Haha. Glad you're enjoying college. I'm actually the opposite. I loved high school, but I don't like my college too much.

America is your home! Who cares about Post-USSR Russia 😛

I've actually never heard of that book, but maybe I should look into it

Reviewing AAMC4 VR, I noticed all my mistakes were in like 2 passages 😡 Must have dozed off during those two...

I'm still scoring around my EK score. Hoping I can see like a 2 point improvement soon :xf:

I know everyone is trying so hard to get like 35+, but I just want a 30. I'd be very satisfied with that
