Class of 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Gosh, my math errors are horrific. I can't do simple division. I need to learn how to write out equations and do the math on paper instead of my head. I've gotten so many questions from trying to do it all in my head. And I wish my verbal score was my PS/BS score. At least you can study for PS/BS. My studying has decreased significantly over the past week though. I need to go to the library or something cause working at home isn't working.

So I heard a story about someone's cycle that horrified me..

I have a friend/acquaintance that graduated from NYU one year ago. He had a 3.8 cumulative gpa as a computer science major. He took his MCAT twice and told me he got a 31. He didn't tell me what he got the other time. He told me he had some research experience but no wet lab experience or publications. He also volunteered for about 400 hours in an emergency room and shadowed several physicians to accumulate about 100 hours. He also volunteered on a first aid squad for several months and did some other on campus related things.

Well said person applied to 15 schools. Sent out primary application in July and secondaries by September and got accepted to NYCOM and SUNY-Buffalo and is still waitlisted at UMDNJ RWJMS.

For some reason this horrifies me and scares me to death? 3.8 is a really good GPA especially in computer science and he went to a great undergraduate university plus had some good ECs it sounds. I also heard he had an excellent personal statement.

Does anyone think that this is surprising? I really expected him to get accepted to more schools. He thinks his downfall was his MCAT score being less than average for his demographic (south asian). What do you guys think?

it depends on what schools he applied to. top tier schools tend to have mcat averaging 34-36 and GPA of 3.8. if he/she applied to too many top tier schools, then the outcome was not surprising at all. you have so many qualified applicants competing for the same spot. you have people with 41 mcat scores and 4.0 GPA's getting rejected pre interview at Harvard and Hopkins while 3.7-3.8's and 35 mcats get interviews and eventually acceptances. the application cycle is like a gamble, you really don't know what to expect but at the same time, you have to try your best to have a decent stats to increase your chances and you have to also accept that all your efforts still does not guarantee you anything. it is luck and determination. i am off to sleep. good luck :luck:

Where did this person apply? All reach schools? If said person applied broadly, they would have probably gotten into a lot more schools.

My first thoughts were 1) poor interviewing skills 2) applied too top heavy. There is a lot of luck to it. 🙁

try using audio osmosis congruently with the EK bio book. i think it helps. it sure did for me anyway.

I could see how that would help. I really like the EK bio book.

Only if there are OOS friendly ones. I'd love to live in Florida. 🙂

yeah its pretty awesome over here... but this summer has been extremely hot. There are some schools here that show love to oos students and if I remember correctly you had some pretty freakin awesome stats.. any school out here would be lucky to have you! 🙂

I'm applying to a few here but I wouldn't mind a change of scenery.

What do you guys think about EK audio osmosis? I've been thinking of getting it for while I'm working out haha.

It's a little corny, but I like it. It doesn't go into the material in depth, but it gets you motivated if you're not in the MCAT mood.

You guys have some pretty cool lizards. I'll be checking out some Florida schools! 🙂

Anywhere would be good

Class of 2017 should be in Florida! 🙂

Ozzi said it's good so I'll be trying it out 🙂

it is only good if you are studying the EK book too. using the audio osmosis alone will leave you with confusion and it won't be useful at all unless you are using the book too.

Cool. I've got the EK books so now I just need to get the audio osmosis 😀

Just got the whole EK package... are you guys using EK alone to study for the MCAT or are you guys using other stuff?

Oh man last weekend I saw 3 tegu lizards... Those things are freakin bigger than I thought. Cool to look at defintely should not touch though.

I 😍 lizards. I once had one that I named Rocky.

I'm using EK+TBR+TPR+Kaplan+MCAT Pearls. I need all the help that I can get! 😳

I haven't gotten all my stuff yet, but I'm fairly certain my set-up's gonna be EK review books, EK 1001 Q's books, and as many of the AAMC tests I can get my hands on. I learn by practice I guess.

- No you don't, you'll kick A**!😎

but wow you had a tegu lizard? impressive... those things are fiesty! lol did you catch it or did you buy it?

Okay it seems like everyone is using TPR as well, I haven't tried them but I'm going to order them and give them a shot.

Just took another weekly practice test. 11 PS, 10 V, 12 BS. My PS and BS score dropped a point each and I guess it was cause I was rushing a bit. I get so impatient when I take these tests. I should learn to calm down. I'll go over it tomorrow. I'm pretty happy that I broke double digits in verbal though. My new strategy seems to work pretty well. Hopefully I keep this all up if not improve. I really wanna try an AAMC test though soon. Just to see where I stand.

Oh and just a tip for everyone: Don't eat fast food the night before a test, or you will feel like crap and have to take a bathroom break after each passage.

I got my TPR from Ebay. It was the books that they use in their classes. I spent around 200$ for the set.

No tegu lizard. Those things look really cool! I just had an itty bitty chameleon that I fed I think meal worms! 😱

I am so jelly of your scores. You are doing so well! Kill that MCAT! 🙂

haha I'm 100% certain you'll wreck it as well. The main thing that boosted my scores was the whole "think like a testmaker" strategy. The test really got me on the subtleties so I decided to take more time per section and make sure I knew the fundamentals of each question and how to apply my knowledge to the situation at hand. I thought that my teachers were dumb for saying something that was so common sense, but when I went through a test saying "Oh, this is an Acid/Base question" or "this is an Ideal Gas question" and figured out the fundamental scenario, it really helped me boost my score. Also, I've noticed that in the BS, a lot of questions are like the verbal section in the sense that one wrong word makes the whole thing wrong. I usually see a couple of right words and immediately choose it, but I have started to read everything thoroughly.

I know you weren't asking for advice, but I figured I'd share my thoughts with you anyway and maybe they can be of some use.

back to studying....

i've been teaching myself physics the first 4 chapters just today, during class i can't understand a word.

chem--- horrible prof, teaching myself as well.

It's getting closer to Fall semester. 👍

just an update 🙂

Heya everybody!

Back from Colorado 🙂

How has the last week treated everyone? I am so behind for the MCAT....
I've been busy the family and my history classes. I fell behind too with my MCAT studies. 🙁

I can't wait for fall semester. I hope things go better. I've been pretty lucky to have good profs. They can really make it break it, IMO.

BS is a lot like verbal. I'm noticing that more and more. As quasiful lol as it sounds, I almost just have to rely on my gut when aswering questions. I get a few more points when I don't reason with myself. Pretending like you're the test making is definitely the way to go. This is very good advice.

Man, my first exam was brutal. Had 10 chapters for the first exam which was a 3weeks-1month after semester started. Probably why I didn't get down the basics so well 😛

I haven't purchased TPR books, but they seem to be almost as good as TBR. I'm sure it's more about how much you already know and how well you can grasp the MCAT style.
