StudyShy: This may sound totally creepy, etc. but I've developed some MAD respect for you from reading the parts of this thread that don't speed by me while I'm at work, haha. It's awesome that you balance kids, intense ER work, MCAT studying, and being generally awesome/nice/mom-like on this thread! Mad props, yo! 😀

Also, I know a lot of you guys (me included...) are preparing for the dreaded beast (mine's 9/2...), I just wanted to update with some GOOD news for the first time since I started studying! I've been underpreparing like it's my job (read: not studying enough), but I just took Kaplan FL 2 and somehow miraculously pulled a 34 (11/11/12) after getting a 26 on FL1 (8/9/9) and a 26 (7/11/8) on the diagnostic! It's obviously a fluke because the PS happened to hit *the only* topics I'm good at (which are very few), but it gives me hope that 5 weeks will be enough to study after not studying enough for the past...erm... month and a half 😱 So yeah, I suck at the MCAT and have been super depressed about it for a while... so getting that score today made me 👍!

:luck::luck: to everyone on here with MCAT-ing!

Good luck to you too! I am also taking it on 9/2 but I didn't do very well on my practice test today =(

Awww, I totally feel your pain. It sounds completely corny, but if this idiot can do it, you can! I mean, I honestly haven't been studying properly at all and have been slacking off, so I must have just gotten lucky with topics on today's FL. It literally hit all of my strengths in PS, and a lot of stuff I recently studied in BS. For verbal, though, it hit EVERY possible weakness: TWO hardcore philosophy passages and some sort of political treatise from the 1700s... not cool. I'll only really be happy about it if I can consistently score in that range on my next few FL's: for now I have to start regularly studying.

Thanks, FloridaMedicine!! This is the first even remotely positive development in my MCAT studying process that has occurred in the past two months! I love how supportive/warm/generally awesome this thread is 🙂

Let's keep each other updated on practice scores! Even if I get a 22 on the next one, I'll let you guys know 😀

It's alright Tatertots, it happens to all of us at one point or another. Take a deep breath, review, and hit it hard tomorrow. When you are ready take another test and kick *****, good luck, rootin for you. :xf:

Yeah theres defintely some really awesome people in 2017 class and I think it's great. Keep up the good work and this should be the first of many positive developments in your mcat studying process. 👍

I am.... in awe. I think the longest I've ever studied straight for the MCAT was the 5 hours it took to take the FL yesterday, lol? It's kind of sad. Do you guys do the entire Writing Sample when you take FL's or do you skip it? I did the prewrites for each prompt just to see if I could think fast enough about the prompts, but ended up pretty much writing the essays out anyway... is this a waste of time?

Ah, MCAT... 👎

Since you guys are already studying for the MCAT, I have a question. I won't be done with Physics II until next May. That said, is it still plausible to teach myself most of MCAT physics as I'm going along in that semester and take the MCAT in April? Or am I better off waiting until after finals and taking the MCAT mid-May/early June?

If you're good at physics and it's almost natural to you, you can take it in april. Otherwise it's probably best to take it in may/june.

I did 2 FL's which took me about 10 hours. then i took an Hour break and continued to go through the FL's which took close to 3 hours. then i just started reading up on Hormones cuz that's where i got most of my questions wrong. 16 ****@ng hours 😡

Just took my first FL...

33 on AAMC #3 🙂

Looking to improve further though I know AAMC #3 is supposed to be the easiest of the AAMC FLs

I'm happy though!

EDIT: Breakdown is 11/11/11. I wish the WS could be scored though hah mine may have been atrocious

Wow, congratulations!!! I can only hope to do that well on an AAMC... I feel like my next practice test is going to be one as opposed to Kaplan. Awesome stuff! 👍

Alright fellow '17ers, is anyone here really good at orgo? Here is a question from lab that we've been stuck on all night:

"The Friedel-Craft acylation of naphthalene with acetyl chloride gives predominantly 1-acetypnaphthalene. Why this product and not 2-acetypnaphthalene? Draw all possible resonance structures for electrophilic attack at the 1 and 2 positions and use these resonance structures to explain the outcome"

I sketched the resonance structures of the intermediates earlier and didn't have anything stick out to me...

If I am understanding it correctly it is because during Friedel-Crafts Acylation the aromatic ring attacks the carbonyl carbon. During this a carbocation is formed on the neighboring carbon. in 1-acetypnaphthalene this carbocation is on the tertiary carbon whereas on the 2-acetypnapthalene it would be on the 2ndary carbon.

I can draw it if you want.
