Class of 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think one of the best moments for me was when I received my first interview invite. So awesome...

Me too! I remember everything about that moment. It was a great feeling. Nothing beat that acceptance though!

Its funny watching all the new application threads popping up and remembering back to last summer when we went through it all. Pretty crazy how far we've come and its only been a year!

Yeah I think my first acceptance was the most memorable for me. The past 12 months have literally flown by.

No kidding. My first acceptance was to my #2 school so it was nice to know I wouldnt be a re-app. But man, after being wait listed for 8 months at my 1st choice, and then getting in.....it was one of the greatest feelings I've ever had.

I am sure that must have been an incredibly feeling! Congrats on that and a job well done! 👍

**** yeah vacation. Plans today: Lift and watch the NBA. Should be a pretty packed schedule.

Just got done with a long bike ride on a gorgeous day in the PNW. time to cool down and stretch while watching game 7 of NBA east semis!!

I am chilling in a hotel for work. Had to go to an apple processing facility today to collect samples. Why does it have to be so far away from my bed? I have to sleep on a pull out bed tonight.

What a baller.

If you don't have a mustache like your avatar's, I would be sad if I ever met you.

Sorry, but I just envision you with a mustache.

Where at in the PNW?

I haven't been on SDN in over a week with moving and all.

Now we're at the in-laws house and still looking for an apartment where my school is. Only a 2 hr drive from here. Lame

After two app cycles, it feels so strange not to be worrying about my committee letter completion date, AMCAS submissions, and building up my ECs. I still have the compulsion to check my email for IIs. It makes me slightly nostalgic to think back to last summer. I'm actually going to miss applying to med school 🙁

This must be what freedom feels like. Good thing it only lasts until August.

AMCAS is STILL sending me reminders about how I haven't sent any LORs to UCSF. I was rejected pre-secondary months ago. Will it ever stop?

Sent from my Galaxy S4

Believe me, I am trying my hardest. Unfortunately though I have brown hair my beard has a lot of blond in it, which makes it not as prominent as I'd like. It also doesn't come in as fully on the upper part of my cheeks or the bottom of my mustache. I could grow a mean neck beard though. YOLO.

I wonder whatever happened to that lovely hairstyle?

Hang in there, homieliciousness. That's a struggle and half. :/

That neck beard in particular reminds me of an amoninable snowman's foot... Why? Who knows.

2017, i need some advice

so im still struggling on the WL at my number one choice in socal--still waiting for a decision but it's taking so so long...I've sent a total of 3 different updates/LOI's--I sent a post-interview LOI, a more traditional "update letter" with new activities in April, and another LOI in May right after I was invited to attend the school's revisit day.

Recently, some emergencies have developed in my fiance's family--the grandparents are super sick and her parents are going to move down to socal as a result--however, this puts the family is some rough financial times as both her parents are quitting their jobs, and are unlikely to find similar employment once they leave the area. She's looking frantically for a job, and the pressure is on to help support her family through this.

Right now I've been accepted at a school on the East Coast. However, naturally, especially in light of these developments, getting into my top choice in socal would mean so much more than just preference to staying in CA or my fit with the school--it would give me and my fiance the ability to be close to her family as they're dealing with all these family issues and financial stuff.

I'm struggling at how/when to communicate this to admissions! I've sent so many LOI's...I was thinking of just sending an email describing the situation to the Dean...so it's not an official "LOI Letter". But I struggle with how that would be perceived, Should I even be mentioning this? I don't want to come off like I'm making things up to get off the waitlist, or that I want to get pulled off the list on account of my fiance's situation only. But as I heard the news from her this week about her family, I couldn't help but feel like "man...it would help so much if I could just get in off the WL here..."

thanks in advance guys for any advice you may have!

I would just send it as a brief email update letter. If you don't get off the WL, could you defer for one year at the East Coast school?

Agreed. It's always worth a try. An you'd be surprised how much stuff like that can matter to someone influential in the admissions office.

I'm so sorry to hear about all of that. I hope everything turns out for the best, my condolences.

Thanks both!

SilverCat, I'm not sure about deferring, I don't think I ever considered that possibility! My fiance just finished her degree in education, and wants to be an elementary school teacher. Finding a position in CA is hard enough with the way public education budgets are right now, let alone trying to get a spot all the way across the country. Deferring would help us for a year by keeping us both local and close to family for the time being so we can help support them as best we can, but it would tough for my fiance to have to quit after a year and start over from scratch at the end of my deferred year..we'll have to think about it if things don't work out on the WL.

Guero, thanks for the support--it's scary to move into that position of supporting one's parents (or parents in-law, in this case)! And health/financial things are never fun to deal with. But yeah I'll write an email to the Dean today. fingers crossed!

Perfect advice here. Deferring should really help out in this situation.
