That tl;dr thread..

Also, the whole white coat thing is pretty much a nonissue for me. If you don't know, you don't know - people can judge you for being useless at times, but what can you do? All good things in time. If we were already proficient in medicine, why go to medical school? 😛

Good call!

Also, that thread=pure quality.

Ah don't be embarrassed. Everyone will know your an MS1 and lack all forms of meaningful knowledge 😛

Does anyone else's school give out full length white coats to medical students? Because Pritzker does and that seems kinda weird. I was actually looking forward to the short white coat, I don't want people thinking I am a doctor.
.

Long white coats! That's cool! 🙂

I am jealous that you already a white coat. I don't even have one yet 🙁

I had to have one for my job at the hospital. I was a supervisor in the clinical lab. It was soooo long. I haven't worn one since quitting. I probably won't wear one in practice.. Just too much upkeep for someone as lazy as me. Lol.

I am the artist formerly knows as MoeMed15. Lol

Nice change!

Man, moving, painting, cleaning, and moving my stuff again from an adjacent room to another is driving me crazy! The chick before me painted the room absolutely hideous yellow with floral boarder paper.ImageUploadedBySDN Mobile1372703807.603610.jpg

But my colors is puuuuuurdy!!!

I've been looking at the threads about books and people seem to have a lot of opinions about BRS & Firecracker. I'm just interested to know what class of 2017 is actually purchasing? Has anyone gotten books yet? I'll be purchasing in about 2.5 weeks.

We're very lucky to have a student service that provides limited free books to students on a first come first serve basis. Plus, my frat has a medical library with every USMLE study guide known to man. I'll only likely have to buy a couple books and maybe an online subscription or two. I feel sooooo blessed!!

That is pretty awful. When my parents moved, I got placed in a room apparently occupied previously by a five year old girl-- the walls were hot pink. My parents refused to let me repaint.

Just out of curiosity, did anyone apply for that Tylenol Scholarship?

White coats aren't that big of a deal. Everyone wears one nowadays, regardless of whether they're a doctor or not. I wore one as a volunteer in a research lab.

So, I decided to try for OSU.I'm going to head up to Columbus tomorrow, and see if I can find an apartment as good as the one I have now. If so, I'll pick Ohio State; I just feel like I'll let a great opportunity slip by because of cowardice. If anyone has any good suggestions for apartments, please let me know. I feel like I've looked at every apartment listing in Columbus-- including the entire listing of the guide for med students by OSU.

Good luck! I hope it all works out for you! Congrats!

I was selected as a semi finalist for the Tylenol scholarship. Did anyone else apply?

Congrats.

About to leave the country. Wish me luck!!!

Ok. So I have a question that I'd like for current attendings to answer about my career plans. How do I go about asking it and avoiding premed backlash? (Is that even possible?)

I can deal with the premeds, but only I'd I get good info from attendings also. Lol. Which forum do I post it in?

Geez. :-/

What's your question?

What's your question?

Well. The scholarship I have requires me to practice rural primary care, which is what I want to do anyway. My research during grad school was about comprehensive community health centers, and I plan on opening one in my rural hometown.

How do I go about getting a mentor for this type of thing. It's a huge project and desperately needed back home. I've wanted to do this for years, but I don't know how. I know it's early to be thinking that far ahead, but I want to start making those connections so I will have an idea of where I'm going.

A comprehensive community health center is a huge building that has all primary care services under one roof: Adult medicine, pediatric medicine, OB/GYN, dentist, optometrist, laboratory, X-ray, and patient education center. I'd also like to include a psychiatrist.

It's like a one-stop shop. 🙂 the research suggests the impact of these centers improve the health of the communities they serve because they are able to administer interventions that other providers aren't able to do, as well as increasing access to care.

Make sense?

I bought firecracker because my friend gave me a 60% off code. Our school also has a lot of the books online. But I love textbooks so I got rohens and Robbins.
Also almost all the BRS books

I would save this for your med school adviser or people that you can talk to in person once you've started class and have met some faculty. You're going to be labeled as a gunner no matter where you post this on SDN.

But I am a gunner. Duh! 🙂

Trust me, I have more gunner questions than this one!

Okay, then definitely don't post on the attending forum, because you're going to get flamed out of there so fast.

I'll just keep to myself then. Lol. I honestly don't mean it in a gunner way. I'm just curious how they get started and what is required. I have time before I need to worry about it.

I imagine it's something along the lines of a doc knows another doc who knows a dentist and decide to go in together on an abandoned strip mall.

Lol. Not exactly what I have in mind. But I gotcha. Haha. My program took us to one that is ideally what I want to do, except a bit bigger.

This is the only perk of not having the white coat ceremony until the end of year 2. I totally know what you feel like because I have those same thoughts.

We know nothing about medicine (at least, most of us don't) and I don't want people to confuse me as being a doctor. It is one of the same reasons why I don't like to wear medical school clothing. What happens if I come across a huge accident? All I can do is say, "Call 911" and then do CPR.

I hate that people are already asking me for medical advice and I feel like having a picture of me in a white coat is going to make things a lot worse.

Is the cost of the white coat included in your tuition? Because I'd hate to have to pay an extra fee for it

I'd start by meeting with doctors that work at a facility like this. You could ask to shadow and explain that you would eventually like to start a center like theirs in your hometown.

Textbooks are overrated. Wait till you get to school to find out what is absolutely essential.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Btw: found a $20 bill on the ground. 🙂

How much is Firecracker without the code? Don't see the prices on their site.

Wow thats interesting. I don't think ours could be any shorter lol

Ours is sleeveless, we have to earn our sleeves. Plus side though, I won't be mistaken for a doctor, maybe a stripper but not a doctor.
