Class of 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Morning class of '17. I need some advice. Tomorrow morning I'm presenting my research to a lot of important people in the urology department at my school, most of them clinicians. My mentor, who is the director of research for the urology dept., wants me to specifically talk about how this research will help me in the future as a physician. What would ya'll say in a talk on this? I mean, I find it really interesting investigating the underlying causes of disease and attempting to discover a cure, as well as giving treatment to patients and seeing the results. What else can I say? Has anyone else had to bridge bench research and your future career as a physician in a talk? I want this talk to go well because these contacts in the urology dept. will be very useful in the future :scared:

Edit: my specific area of research is on prostate cancer

Morning Procyon. Moving back to school today!

Hopefully things go smoothly. Are you living in a nice building this year?

Oooh, this is tough. I've never had to do anything like this, so take my advice with a grain of salt. I guess you can probably talk about something about the research that will, more broadly, impact the way you and other physicians might approach prostate cancer (i.e., understanding of pathophysiology, treatment or some other thing). That probably wasn't helpful, but maybe it would be helpful to think in those terms; how's the research beneficial to the future medical community?

Morning Procyon!

I really like your handle... It's one of my favorite stars (yes I am really interested in astronomy) 🙂

👍 Thanks! I like astronomy too. One of my favorite ways to procrastinate is reading random things about astronomy and sea life. 😀

Good luck Totsinators!!! I'm sure you'll get a 42 or something ridiculous 😀

Haha, I read about random languages on Wikipedia when I'm procrastinating 😉

And I just realized that I have less than 2 weeks until my MCAT. This is not good.

Haha. I used to read about random languages too! Then I get depressed that I don't have the time to learn them. 😛

I'm sure you'll do awesome. Be confident. Over confident. 45 time. Get it. 😎

Hahaha, thanks dude. I'm trying not to freak myself out too much, but the end is nigh. I just feel like I've been ignoring physics, ochem, and gchem in lieu of bio! I haven't done physics in weeks! What's really scary is that I move into school two days after my MCAT, and I'm totally not ready clothes-wise, dorm room-wise, or school supply-wise. I'm excited to go back though! It's unfortunate that I won't have time to go out and buy dorm decorations, I was hoping for a nicely and classily decorated room this year.

Ooooooh my current favorite is Thai. That language is OFF THE WALL cool! Too bad it's not offered anywhere, at all, haha.

I am going to slap verbal. AAMC#8: 38 (14, 11, 13)

Wowww dude you're such a beast, congrats!! I would kill for a 14/11/13 😱 You're consistently in the 38-40 range, which is insane.

How did AAMC 9 compare to AAMC 8?

I think 9 had the hardest PS and more obscure verbal questions. The bio was easier though....

Wait...I'm confused 😕 Did you take 8 or 9 today? You posted scores for 8 or was that a typo? 😕

I think you are right on track. You can also explain how research developed your critical thinking skills(if you think in your research, or just by learning about the study design) and how you became better aquatinted with reading journals and understanding where scientific information comes from. Did you work with patients? if so you could explain how working with the patients made you more understanding of patients who go through cancer and this insight will help you in the future, even if you are not a urologist/oncologist. Even if you just entered data, you could talk about this to some extent

I worked on a prostate cancer epidemiology project during my sophomore year. 👍

every unit in this defense driving course repeats. 😡

I've been putting off my last driving hour at my driving school for two years. I always get the same crabby old dude who yells at me and makes me sob once the hour is up. 🙁

Driving blows anyways.

I love driving 😳

But I just found out today that my new car gets 15 mpg. I bought it about a month ago and I am loving it but the mileage it gets is killing me 🙁 And it's not even an SUV or a pick up

Oops I definitely took 9. Have 2 more to go: 10 and 11! :scared:

I have 3, 4, 9, 10, and 11 to go haha. 😱.

Can anyone explain to me what is meant by "maintaining the same amplitude of a light wave" when it goes through a material? I'm... baffled.

Oh, is AAMC 3 worth doing? I'm taking AAMC 4 tomorrow, and saving 9, 10, and 11 for closer to 9/2.

I also just realized that I hate my AAMC average 🙁

😱😱 What a jerk 😡

What kinda car is it? 😱😱

😱😱 You have quite a bit to go. I think AAMC 3&4 should boost your average and 9,10,11 will probably make you feel sad...so I hear

Yeah, I know. I'm definitely doing 4 tomorrow, and 9 probably on Thursday? Ahhhhh I don't know >.<

It's a 2005 Infiniti G35x sedan. I am in love with it 😍😍😍

The mpg is a big drawback though 😳 Thank god I don't drive much during the school year

Well, it's a sexy car, so it's worth it 😀

Add 8 to that list 😳

Awwww, don't feel bad SU, your AAMC 8 was nothing to scoff at. Anything 30+ is always good. Honestly, if I get a balanced 30 on 9/2, I'm not retaking.

You know what's really strange? On AAMC 7, I got a 34, which was a 121/146 raw score. On AAMC 8, I got a 31, which was a 115/146. On AAMC 5, I got a 30, which was a 110/146. That's a crazy difference between scores, raw score-wise. 5 points between a 30 and a 31, but 6 points between a 31 and a 34. That's pretty harsh, methinks.

Thanks, tman, for the top dedication 😀 YAY I learned the barebones basics of blood coagulation today. I feel special 😎

Infiniti??? Hot dayum, boi, that's sexy. I just share my parents' cars, since they don't think I'm worth a separate car, haha. They're right though, it's more of a hassle to have a car at my college than not to.

Do 10 and 11 before 9 so you don't feel crushed if they end up being difficult for you 🙂

Wait, so AAMC 9 is considered decently okay, but 10 and 11 crush souls? Is this the general consensus? Maybe I'll take 4, then 10, then 9, then 11.

That's so crazy 😱😱

I know, right?!?! I couldn't believe it. There's a SUBSTANTIAL difference between how a 31 and a 34 are perceived, but a 6-point difference isn't really so significant, whereas a 30 and a 31 are perceived similarly, even though they're pretty separate scores. Makes absolutely no sense to me.

I have no idea  Ask goosewing/ozzi/mohad since they already took it 😀

Show's the difference in difficulty pretty well.
