Class of 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

Sitting in Whistler village, taking a break from boarding, going snowmobiling today. Let me just say that if you're a skier/boarder you should come to Whistler at least once in your life.

This may be a stupid question but is there like an unofficial (or official) due date for FAFSA?

End of February if you were hoping for grants. However, sooner is better than later. There may still be a few around for people. You may just get all loans.

I think this actually may vary depending on schools. My parents sent their tax return in by mail before I could have the sense to tell them to e-file it. My school wants me to use the IRS transfer thing, so it's going to be well into March before I get that opportunity. I e-mailed the financial aid office, and they said as long as I get everything in before May, my financial aid package would be unaffected.

I don't know exactly what that means, but it can't be bad? :scared:

Yeah, I thought the main thing that mattered was submitting an estimated FAFSA stat. I submitted mine 1/2/13, but am just now able to see a tax person this Friday. My stuff probably won't clear and txfr to FAFSA until the first of April. I hope that doesn't affect my eligibility for grants and such.

. . .

That's my friend with the Blackomb glacier in the background. The choppy snow on the left is the bottom of an avalanche that fell. Insane!
I'm so jelly. I love snow.

I submitted estimates, but my school was like "lolno, we want that real jazz." 🙁

I just joined the Student Doctor Network. I don't know where to post this question. I just want some honest advice that isn't sugar coated. I just graduated pharmacy school and I'm realizing that after learning so much about drugs I really wish I could prescribe medication. I could go on to PA school and be a PharmD/PA, but that still isn't an MD or DO. Does anyone have advice for me? Thanks.

Welcome to SDN! I'll PM you a link to a more appropriate outlet for this question. Hold tight (at work and on y phone).

Wow today is actually a nice day in the north east. :O. Anyone else excited for spring to come?

I'll just answer this here and you can PM me with any questions. I go to a pharmacy school, so I think I have some specialized knowledge about this.

- Most pharmacy students don't have to take two semester physics, so that's something you are going to have to retake for two semesters. The rest of the pre-reqs (bio, chem, orgo) should have been two semester for you and should count.
- GPA-wise, for MD should be >3.5 and for DO should be >3.3
- Take the MCAT when you're ready, for MD shoot for >30 and for DO shoot for >27
- Be very prepared to have your motivations questioned (i.e., why did you drop pharmacy and decide to apply to med school) -- this will be one of your biggest obstacles, so be prepared to explain it clearly and thoroughly

Again, PM me with any questions and check out the stickies on the main pre-allo page for more info about applying.

I'll refresh it 104 times for you, bud 👍

It is kind of funny how if one were just dedicated enough, s/he could inflate the crap out of that counter.

It's also funny that I'm reinforced by the ascending counter everytime I check my own MDApps. "We're all just a rat in a cage." -Billy Corgan

LoL

GL on the paper! I've been working a bunch on mine, too. I'm on my way to finally getting it presentable enough to shoot off to JNS. But once I get to the stats portion I'll need to bribe anyone I can find with a master's in stats via beer and pizza. I have no idea how to do anything more advanced than t-tests...and a first author paper, well, t-tests just aren't gunna cut this comparison. 🙁

Good luck to you too! Yes, beer and pizza are good ideas. I got a couple of my friends to run a logic regression for mine. I will not be publishing the results but I wanted to make sure that my hypothesis was right. I am now thinking about doing my MPH on biostatistics. I want to be able to do this stuff by myself 🙂

You know, I feel you on the autonomy and the inherent curiosity of wanting to know what you're doing down to the very last detail. But trust me, after working in research for many years (specifically including public health/epi), it'd be a huge waste of your time and wouldn't offer you a return. All of the PIs are assigned biostatisticians to run their stats for them, albeit in a roundtable fashion. You'll have to do your own stats during your MPH; but once you receive grant funding? Your time is spent on writing more grants, supervising your current grant, supervising residents and students, and seeing pts, among the plethora of other administrative and "extra-academic" crap they throw on you without asking. Your time becomes so thoroughly spread thin that anything that can be delegated will be. 🙁 C'est la vie.

Very good points. What if I wanted to do a combination of clinical practice & community-based interventions? I am not sure that I will be going into academics (at least that is not what I am thinking right now). I would still like my interventions to be evidence-driven and with limited resources we may have to wear different hats... I am not talking about clinical trials... you may be right though. My friends keep on saying that I should just do Epi... I do know that you can learn most soft skills in the field, a classroom is not needed for most things. Who knows though I woudn't do the MPH until later so I still have time 🙂 Are you thinking about getting one?

Ah, I see. Your situation will indeed be different. But I'm not sure focusing on stats would be a great idea. More to come later, after I visit the evil, sadistic, fiend they somewhow managed to rename "The Dentist." 😀

You also lost the poker game... Just reminding you.

So if you guys could only attend one second look, which one would you choose?

School A:

- must fly to the other side of the country
- really liked the students and faculty you met on interview day and think you'd fit in the culture
- know nothing about the area (so some of the area/housing presentations might actually be useful)
- they'll have a PBL session on second look (big part of curriculum)
- worried that the school might be so cost prohibitive that logically you shouldn't attend (no real idea til financial aid comes out)
- the second look itinerary sounds fun

School B:

- can drive to the school
- worried about a cutthroat culture (so it might be a good idea to meet potential classmates first)
- semi-familiar with the area and not too worried about housing and attractions they'll try to sell you on regarding the location
- have friends who currently attend the school that can answer your questions
- can probably set up a shadow a student day at another time
- likely to be the "best bang for the buck" school

A, because you "can probably set up a shadow a student day at another time"

I'd attend A's second look, but probably matriculate at B.
