Don't forget, you'll still have to jump in with the others for head and neck. They don't really tell you that unless you ask. That's the one thing I loved about Western U. I wish more schools offered that program.

Again, Ravizzle beat me to it. Plus, I also have dsoz and am waiting to see if I also have Rachelkj and bluepotato. Either way, bluepotato will be nearby. I believe she was also accepted to Western U's OR campus.

I'm pretty sure you have to be matriculated in order to defer. At my school, during orientation we're having a quick little deferment session where we take care of that. Maybe you'll have that at yours?

It'll happen automatically. The school will update the central system (Clearinghouse), which notifies your lenders, both federal and private. It does sometimes take longer than expected, though. So if they don't automatically go into deferment by the time you start classes, you can always fill out a form and fax it to ensure they stop charging you.

EDIT: But jemstone is correct in that you must be enrolled. They generally don't enact the deferment until a few days in to classes to ensure you don't drop at the last minute.

Oh, really? I kind of guessed it was automatic for federal loans, but I was under the impression that I had to do something about my private loans. I called my loan people and they sent me a form to fill out when I enrolled.

EDIT: I'd also like to take this opportunity to complain about how stupid it is that I started out with AES as my servicer and then got switched to Great Lakes. I have loans on both servicers now and have to deal with them both. Merp.

Not all private lenders participate in Clearinghouse, but most do. Check their website. All lenders have forms on their websites that you can use to defer your loans manually. Some will instruct you not to send in a form if your school participates in Clearinghouse (again, 99% of schools do, save for the few vocational or tiny community colleges). On the form section of their website, SallieMae specifically instructs you not to send anything in if your school participates.

I hope that clarifies everything. 🙂

Are you attending Upstate? Syracuse is so pretty, granted I mainly saw downtown. We had lunch at La Mission. Their salsa=not spicy, oh well 😛

I am on a fellowship now and mine get deferred 🙂 I am still scared by how much $ we'll borrow for med school. That whole not unsubsidize loans is a huge blow for med students...

On a happier note- T-12 days until my visit to SoCal 😀

Also, those gifs were crazy!
 
The upperclassmen at penn state create this "unsolicited advice" packet for incoming students, and I'm getting so anxious just reading it! :scared:

I Scrubs binged for the first ~6 weeks post-graduation this spring on my GF's Netflix account. Pretty fun times. Don't mess around with the final season though. It's much better to stop watching at the end of Season 8!

Thankfully I'm on the HPSP so my undergrad loans (<$30k) is all the debt I'll be dealing with 4 yrs from now!

Some of those gifs blew my mind

Yeah, it's always disappointing when good shows go downhill towards the end. And unfortunately it seems to happen with most shows 🙁

Cool. Syracuse has a pretty awesome refugee program (combination of resettlement agencies & other non-profits). I think I mentioned it before but you should totaly check out Upstate's work with the refugees. I know that they do health assessments & more long-term primary care.

The food was fine, more panamerican than mexican but that is ok. The restaurant is inside an old church, very cute.

I'll be attending UC Irvine 😍

So every day for work I visit this one nursing home. I'm always wondering at all the old folks who work at an old folks home. I wonder what they think as they hobble around cleaning stuff and they see the residents who are just a little worse off than they are. I don't think I could do it personally...

Are you going to penn state?! I haven't "met" anyone on SDN that's going there yet! Um...I've basically been stalking the accepted students section on the website but it's all for last year so it's not actually for our class yet. But you can find the packet there at the bottom of the page along with a lot of other helpful links and pdfs from last year's orientation. Hopefully they'll post our stuff soon since our curriculum is changing so a lot of this stuff may not exactly apply to our class.

I think that I am going to copy your date +/- 1 or 2 days. I should have all the info I need by then. In some ways I feel like it can't come soon enough just to get it over with.

From what I understand, Jeff refuses to process FAFSA unless you use the IRS retrieval tool. I've done so for my parents, but my return is in limbo at the IRS and will probably be that way until May/June-ish. I talked to a guy at the financial aid office, and he said to call back on May 1st and they might be able to work something out.

Hey, at least your parents agreed to put their info in. Mine refused... no school-specific fin aid for me 🙁

I was freaking out before because I thought missing the deadline for my school would make me ineligible for federal loans. Called and found out that wasn't the case, because the deadline is just for institutional aid. I've got a small need-based scholarship already from them, so I guess I already have something in my pocket, which is more than I guess most can say.

Still... I'd kind of like all the free monies I can get.
