I don't think I could live without this site now. It helps me stay focused when all I want to do is curl up into a ball and shut out the world. I haven't felt this motivated since I decided I couldn't live without medicine.

Internal motivation is great and all, but a good support system can help you do things you didn't think were possible. 😎

On another topic, my "interview" went well. I just have to let them jab me with a needle so they can tell me my PPD is positive (duh!) and then stand for a chest xray AND two shots lol. BTDT, except last time I had to be on pills for a year. After they are through with that torture, I have to take an online test, print out my certificate, sit through a grueling six hour orientation, and then take another test.

To top things off, they do not support shadowing or procedure viewing of their volunteers. So I guess getting back into the OR isn't happening. I'll just stick with it for this semester and find a teaching hospital to volunteer at from now on.

I haven't volunteered so I don't know how to go about shadowing, but if you work around a certain area, the best thing, imho, would be to chat up the nurses and ask them why this and why that. You'd be surprised by how many basic things are taken for granted. I accidentally stumped all the nurses on the floor of the hospital I was at when I asked them about why a certain basic protocol was being followed.

Once you've demonstrated to them that you're actually interested in healthcare, start asking the doctors about what course of treatment is being pursued with regards to X patient and how that diagnosis was made. Maybe you can ask them if you can shadow them if you're pretty pally with them.

That's what I ended up doing last time. It was the nurses that allowed me in if the doctors agreed. However, at that hospital, you could volunteer in the OR itself. I plan on at least giving it a try.

But then again, orientation has been completely underwhelming thus so far. Tomorrow will almost be unproductive. Sunday will almost certainly be unproductive. You can pretty much infer that the lack of productivity during my last week of "vacation" - while already in my dorm - will definitely translate into more forum time. At least I have an excuse...por ahora.

On an unrelated note, I didn't think my school would be the school to have so many Biology/Pre-Med guys...yet there are only four of us in the BS/MD program. :meanie:

Dementia and Alzheimers are depressing. It's unfair that stuff like that happens to good people, but I guess that's just life. The good news is that we are getting closer to a cure.

Brains scans are pretty cool too

What limits are we referring to here....not knowing how much beer you can chug before passing out 😀 or something acadamic related.

I want to hear all the details because I want to do the dorm thing soooooooo bad and I will just live vicariously through those of you who do!
 
ACtually the dorms I got are bigger than the ones I wante to get so now I'm happy. Currently my suitemate and I are here but not our dormmates so we moved in together and are going to use the other room as a party room if they don't show.

Lol, no def not nearly academic goals. However, there was some anatomy if you get my drift 😛

I am jealous. I told my BF that I plan on moving into the dorms as a junior and senior. I cant wait. Besides living at home comes with all sorts of drama...from the BF, his son, his sister, and his dad.

I'm currently living vicariously through several residence docs, medical students, students who are taking the MCAT and people who are applying.

You learn a lot of the inside scoop here.
 
eventually you won't be needing the 'what are my chances' section because you KNOW what your chances are.
 
then you become a mentor. I know i've become one.
