Thanks for the support everyone! They decided that it wouldn't pass on its own, so surgery later... My day yesterday was great though, so I can't complain too much!

Funny I was just rewatching the episode of Friends where Phoebe gave birth to the triplet and Joey passed his kidney stone, what are the odds! :dead:

So sorry to hear about the pain and the upcoming surgery, @sunflower18. Do you still have interviews coming up? Whether you do or not, I'm wishing you a swift return to comfort and good health.

Oh noo so sorry to hear that! Hope your surgery goes swiftly and uneventfully. Perhaps too much delicious salty food from the interview trail... 🙂

Hey everyone -- thanks so much for the well wishes and support! I had surgery last night, but unfortunately I need another one in 6-8 weeks. Ah well. It'll all work out 🙂 my pain has greatly diminished so I'm happy about that!
Sending healing energy to the soon-to-be healer!

I can't wait for March (spring break!). Hopefully I will know exactly which school I will be attending by then too. Are y'all gonna post where you end up matriculating on here? Or will I have to ask each of you individually by PM?

Finally got around to some baking 🙂

Very thankful that your pain has lessened, and I hope that your second surgery goes smoothly! Best of luck sunflower!

Haha hopefully I can confidently post something! I have absolutely no idea yet and no strong feelings pushing me in any direction, and that's scaring me.

It wasn't snowy until yesterday, and as I understand it, it'll continue snowing for the next couple of days. Looks like this intersession will just be spent on campus! I'll be working on various things for the upcoming semester, and there's more than enough company at school to keep me occupied haha

Heck, I'll tell ya right now I'm choosing ucsd 😀 I can't wait to hear where everyone else is going and even more excited to call you guys my peers and colleagues and hope to welcome even more sdners to this thread! Also on an unrelated note I just found my lucky belt to take tests with
@Tman90, is this the belt? Congratulations on having chosen such a great school and such great weather! (Envy)

Thanks Bengali and congrats to you on all of your acceptances!!! That is an awesome belt and I wish I could say that is what I found, hahaha... i tried posting the picture with my iphone but maybe it didn't work so here it is!View attachment 188850

It's the year of the penguin, ya'll!!!
Love Original Penguin. Very nice choice.

Brownies were great!! They grew vertically in the oven and puffed over the pan a bit but who doesn't like more crunchy edges 🙂
The kfood looks bomb -- my favorite part are the unlimited side dishes haha

I'm imagining myself sitting in class a year from now, noticing a penguin on the belt buckle of the student next to me, and whispering,

"Hello, Tman90."

Man, this winter storm threw a wrench into my travel plans. I have to come home on weds now instead of tues after the interview. Need to figure out a place to stay on tues night but I think I'll have to miss another day of work.

On the flip side, I'll get to hang out an extra afternoon and morning on the beach so I guess it's not all bad. My bank account will probably beg to differ though...

I'm still crossing my fingers for UCSD. Oy.

That interview sucked. Loved the school till the interview and the point that admissions had an army recruiter talk to us.

It wasn't opt in. I was furious.

Interviewers were needlessly harsh and seemed to be doing the good cop bad cop thing. The main interviewer looked bored and by the end...I was too.

What a waste.

I hate this snow ...

I miss Seattle. Actually, I miss LA. lol

Anyways, DC is fun. Went through the whole touring stuff. So much walking ... and so much eating ...

Also, went to a day trip to Philly and nerded out on the history there. Went to Joe's for Cheesesteaks. Whiz > Prov.

🙁 Miami?

🙁 Miami?

Yup. Loved the students. Super awesome and chill.

I'm crossing my fingers for Einstein. I wish I was home. I'd rather deal with a blizzard. Almost feel like this was a mistake. The interview just really made me feel awful. I didn't care about what we talked about.

WaSnt a conversation. Just a checklist of questions. The ethical questions were fun. The questions about..."tell me about a time when you had xyz happen..." Was like why do I care...

Have you heard yet?

I'm sorry to hear that your interview didn't go well. I loved the students too. I feel like I could fit in there pretty well; the "work hard, play hard" mentality doesn't bother me one bit. If it makes you feel better, my interview was not my best either. I got interviewed by a PhD; nice guy, did question me about no research experience but didn't grill me on it; I still felt like I could have done my interview better, tho. I have not heard back from them yet. 1/21 was too early to hear back from, I may or may not hear back on 2/4.

EDIT: You also interviewed MD/MPH instead of just MD like I did. Your experience may have been different to begin with.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience! But just to note, I don't think it's fair to judge a school based on a particular interviewer. Chances are, that person would have zero bearing on your education if you were to attend.

Do the interviews really kill the school for you? One of my top schools had GREAT students and a great vibe for the whole day... but for some reason the faculty I interviewed with was just old, socially awkward, and rude. It was hands down one of my worst interviews ever and did not reflect well upon the school. However, when I heard that other people had much different interview experiences than I did and when I talked to the students that all loved the school, I decided to not let one horrible interviewer cloud my impression of an otherwise fantastic school. (I get that it's different for everyone... but the fact that you loved the student body must say something for the overall quality of the school.....)

Miami is different because your interviewer is one of the cheerleaders for your application. If the person supposed to be supporting my app is bored then what's the point. Guy asked me about number of applications, if I was accepted, if I never took time off at my job because I had used 2x52x40 for total hours. It just seemed so petty, especially since I had worked 25 months and rounded a month down for that reason. Ie vacation and time off.

I hope umass works out on thurs, but Einstein is now solidly my top choice.

+1 Had this happen at 3 of my interviews, two of which were my top choices. 🙁

So sad that the interviewer left a sour taste in your mouth @ridethecliche, but I understand how you feel... especially when you spend the time and money to go out and interview in the first place. Hope you get some time to decompress and bake away in the lovely Miami heat. There'll be plenty of snowfall waiting for you when all this is over.

At one of these interviews, my faculty member was 40 minutes late and only spent only about 15 minutes with me (on what was supposed to be a 45-60 min interview), checking their phone the whole while. They didn't even ask me any questions. It was my preinterview #1 and I adored the school... but the interview left me frustrated and seething over the amount of money (and 4 am wakeup) I had spent to go to a 15 min lacklustre interview. C'est la vie.

I feel for you, @ridethecliche. I hope you get into Einstein! However, let's all remember to put this in perspective. We've all gotten accepted to at least 1 school already. Anything else now is just icing on the cake. No matter how bad an interview may go, there will always be thousands of applicants with zero acceptances who would do anything to be in your place even if the interview still ends up being 15 min long or the interviewer still ends up being bored/disinterested.

Also, RTC, maybe you'll still get into Miami. It is possible to get accepted by a school where your interview wasn't that great (and vice versa).

Great reminder, @Ace Khalifa. Thanks. Sometimes I get greedy. More, more, more--and I can attend only one school, after all!

I'm hanging out with fourth years and they're all awesome...

Damn the interview.
@ridethecliche. . .that's the spirit! I had one and a half bad interviews (interviewers?), so that experience can blur the vision. I would hate to think that my undergrad school would be judged by a couple of less-than-stellar professors I know. . .

I'm also sorry you had such a sucky experience 🙁. It's really weird how other people's experiences at the same school can be so different.

One question though: Why were you furious about an army recruiter talking to you? That didn't happen during my Miami interview (or any of them, for that matter), and it does sound odd, but why did it make you so mad? Really just trying to understand where you're coming from ...
