It's an incredible show! I also love the Cold War/spy themes.

I haven't watched Sons of Liberty. I'll definitely check it out when I have free time. Btw, did you catch the Hatfields & McCoys mini-series?!

Sorry, I'm not the best person to ask about LORs. However, Ace does have a good point. You might as well give it a shot. Good luck!!!!
Just saw the trailer and read about them on Wiki. Wow ... that's crazy though. Never knew about this ... why can't they teach stuff like this in history? hahaha

I guess it can't hurt... My only reservation would be that most schools require any update or change to an application be made through AMCAS. However, you could argue that LOI and ITA emails/letters aren't through AMCAS. Therefore I say go for it because it can't hurt! But remember, I'm no expert.

Edit: Also, thanks for enjoying Philly. Maybe I'm weird but it always puts a smile on my face when someone even mentions Philly. I don't know why, I guess I have a lot of city pride hahaha
Aha ... yeah, Philly was pretty cool. I enjoyed all the touristy/historical stuff a lot and pretty much spent like 4 hours in the Old Philly. Tbh, the city wasn't my most favorite (I'm sorry .... haha) but it was again, it was enjoyable.

And I must say .... Cheese Whiz > Prov. I ordered 1 of each at Joe's just to try both. Also, Buffalo fries > Pizza fries. Yes, I'm a fatass ...........

Oh, the soft pretzel at Eastern Market too. Omg ........ probably one of the best pretzels I've had!

I'm sorry you had that experience. It sucks because an unfavorable doctor's appointment can deter someone from seeking medical attention for future problems...

Elizabeth and Philip are supreme badasses! For a while, I've been curious about the quality of Russian that is spoken by some of the show's characters. I've actually been hoping that someone would elucidate this for me 😉

They are such interesting characters! Hmm...it's been several years since I studied Russian so I only notice the easy phrases haha so I cannot speak to the quality of it.

You should have applied to miami but then your interviewer might have sat there and accused you of lying on your application.

I swear I'm not bitter.

@Ace Khalifa , did you have 2 interviewers? I.e. one interviewer and an MS 4 that was taking notes etc.
It's okay if you're still bitter about your horrid interview. I'm still bitter about my alternate list placement.

I only had 1 interviewer, but he was a PhD, so that already meant we wouldn't really connect over anything. Really dumb on their part.

Booo to it not being your favorite! Did you get a chance to see the Blue Cross Winter Rink? What was your favorite city? I am very proud of you/jealous that you did such thorough taste tests hahaha and philly soft pretzels (and waterice) are a staple here. Even if it wasn't your favorite city I'm glad you had a good time here and I wish I could have shown you around but I didn't know you were coming/didn't want to be creepy....
Hmm I don't think I did. I actually enjoyed Chicago a lot. I hated it the first time I went, but I think that's cause I was flustered from a terrible interview. This time, I saw that it's a pretty awesome city. I've got to say though, from all my East Coast travels, this past month and from previous experiences, Boston will always be my favorite <3 (except for the Pats. Stupid ass Pats.....)

And I would've let you know but ... it literally was out of the blue. I had nothing to do in Baltimore so I just bought a day bus ticket to Philly and went straight to DC at night. lol

Instead of "eastern medicine" a better translation might be "traditional medicine". The word "中“ is not really about the origin, but more about the choice of approach, which is a historical, traditional one. So "western medicine" is really "modern medicine". Anything that's done in China using modern scientific method would be considered 西医。

it definitely has parts that are based on persistent observations that correctly linked the usage of some plants or the practice of some kind of activities with the change in one's body. Those parts were as much of a cultural belief as a rudimentary scientific practice. Many of the connections made throughout the history were later proven on molecular level to be right. The part where it emphasizes that maintaining an even temper, AKA stress reduction, is good for health. No need to argue with that.

However. A big however.

There aren't that many solid observations. "Traditional medicine" that we now know is inflated by popular cultural beliefs, naive attempts to explain complicated biological attempts with imaginations. It can be taught as a fun class as part of a proper "western medicine" education to give some historical information. But as a degree to its own end? It's like trying to study for physics but the entire scope of the learning are evolved around the personal diary of someone who died many centuries ago. Will there be some valid observations? Sure. But why would you?

Of course, health related practices in each culture (and sub culture) will have parts that might have an observational foundation and parts that are purely cultural based myths invented to explain the then unexplainable. Also, patients will always have their own value system when making medical decisions. Sometimes we are not invited to make the best possible decision on behave of the patient, instead we are there to help the patients make the best out of whatever they consider the best option.

I meant Eastern medicine! I was just translating directly from what I heard, so maybe they meant modern Chinese medicine vs. traditional medicine... The more you know! The medical system is so interesting over there... To visit a dermatologist we showed up when the hospital opened and picked a number (like at the DMV). My dad said that due to all the competition, most of the doctors in city hospitals have Ph.D.'s in addition to their medical degrees.

I'm sorry you had that experience. It sucks because an unfavorable doctor's appointment can deter someone from seeking medical attention for future problems...

I'm going to get on to watching this show since you recommended it, and I will translate/evaluate for you!!

I was actually waiting for your acceptance to quote this:
Congrats on all of the recent acceptances and IIs!!! I'm trying to feed off of everyone's positivity I don't know what I'd do without you guys!

...it's only November... it's only November... it's only November... just have to keep telling myself that to keep from going mad! I also have to keep checking last year's school threads to reassure myself that indeed, applicants do receive IIs in November, December and January... I'm crossing my fingers for my fellow class of 2019 hopefuls still awaiting IIs with me!!!! :xf:

@Cyberdyne 101 , @Iceandmedicine , @pink/\floyd , Oh my gosh! You guys are going to make me cry again! You all are too sweet! I have loved being able to root for you all as well, and I'm so glad that any of you feel that I've had any kind of positive influence on this thread

I've had numerous classmates/friends/current med students warn me in the past about SDN, how it's outrageous and full of nothing but negativity and hopelessness and mean-spirited neurotic pre-meds. While some of us (myself included) can be a bit neurotic, I'd have to say that all of those warnings couldn't be farther from the truth!

Here on the forums and especially in this thread, I have found an extraordinary group of unique, supportive, kind individuals whom I am blessed to consider my friends (even if only online). This thread gives me hope for the future of medicine! This journey will be what we make of it and if the personas that come across here are any indication of the true spirit of the collective class of 2019, then it's going to be one helluva ride! I can't wait!!!:soexcited:

Edit to add: Sorry for the sap! Just in a sappy mood today hahaha :biglove:

Has anyone been driven crazy by the NeedAccess Application yet?

To be fair, these forums are pretty intimidating. I've already gotten my acceptances, but after reviewing some of these threads, I get cold sweats and start dreading for my future. Just that interview dress code thread made me uneasy. "Oh god, I wore black pants AND black shoes! How boring will they think I am? My blue tie was probably slightly too blue. This is the end." However, there are so many nuggets of wisdom if you pick through the pieces.

Another big shoutout to @M12B! HUGE CONGRATS ALL AROUND! Now you just have to relax until the autumn.

Just sent that bad-boy off. Ye gods, half that application was estimation-based.

I love what they ask what your savings are currently and then what they'll look like September 2015. I'm anticipating a pretty steep drop...

Guys, 3 weeks until the biggest day of the entire year. No, I'm not talking about some fancy shmancy decision date. I'm talking about the return of the Underwoods. Am I more anxious for the last round of decisions, or to find out wth happens next?? Plot twist: it's both, and I'm just a complete nervous wreck.

There's 24 hours in a day. There's 13 hours worth of brand-spanking-new Underwood shenanigans. That leaves... 6 hours left for my labwork (hope my boss is okay with that)? This is going to be totally doable.

I try to space it out a bit -- no pun intended  It'll take me a weekend to finish the entire season.

Yeah... I did an estimate just to get it into northwestern by the upcoming deadline, but I'm going to have to make some minor adjustments. Of course after submitting I added 6 other schools and my completion percentage dropped to 70, so I've still got some work.

Hey guys.. I have a quick question regarding FAFSA.. (sorry if this has been asked before!). Did you all get a Direct Stafford Loan Limit of 20,500$? From my understanding the max med school students will get is $47,167?! Will this change at a later time or do we have to call FAFSA and get this changed? Thanks!

Yup... dunno if this is coincidence or not, but I also got the same Stafford limit.

Not sure how the rest of this finaid stuff works, unfortunately. 🙁

Hey, @M12B, isn't this the time of year when wood-dwelling folks prepare to go out and tap those maple trees? Sap can be precious (and sweet!) Congratulations to you!

At least we are all on the same page 😛
I was reading through a link on sdn and it said the FINAID offices usually update it when they send you your packages. So let's hope that happens!!

Just wanted to say a big thank you to all of you who were so kind (and flattering!!) during my recent public ("why don't we do it in the road?") meltdown. I read all the supportive responses many, many times, but was temporarily too overwhelmed to express my gratitude. (There have to be a few limits to these displays of emotion!) Anyway, I have had a few hours of sleep now and the distance in time and space has allowed me to put things in a better-framed big picture. I have two more interviews--my applications were apparently scraped off the very bottom of the barrel and invitations extended in a "what the heck?" spirit--and then I will contemplate this entire strange, wrenching process in the most serene detachment I can muster.

But just to repeat my main point--thank you. Sometimes you might wonder if sending those gracious words into the cyber-void matters. I'm here to say that it does.

Now I'm in peril of channeling Blanche Dubois, from Streetcar Named Desire. . ."I have always depended on the kindness of strangers. . ." :shy:
